The Lego Batman Movie (2017) 🦇🧱😂
“The greatest Batman/Joker breakup movie ever made somehow came from LEGO.”
Let’s start by showing y’all the trailers shall we?
And also I wanna say this review and the next one are gonna be a bit shorter compared to some of my other DC reviews. Not because I dislike this film or anything, but because this movie is honestly pretty straightforward. It knows exactly what it is. It’s fast, chaotic, self-aware, and basically one giant love letter to Batman as a character while simultaneously roasting him for two straight hours 😭
Also side note if y’all are wondering where this movie fits timeline-wise with the LEGO movies, easy: This film basically takes place after the ending of The Lego Movie and before The Lego Movie 2.
Anyways… let’s get into this glorious fever dream.
🦇 Non-Spoiler Plot Overview
The Lego Batman Movie takes the version of Batman from The Lego Movie — the overly dramatic, hyper edgy, emotionally unavailable version — and asks: “What if this guy had to actually deal with his emotional issues?”
And somehow… it works shockingly well.
The story revolves around Joker wanting Batman to admit that Joker is his greatest enemy. And yes, that sounds ridiculous, because it IS ridiculous. But the movie fully commits to the joke and honestly turns it into the emotional core of the entire film.
Joker is basically going through a supervillain midlife crisis because Batman refuses to emotionally acknowledge him 😭
Batman meanwhile keeps acting like:
> “You mean nothing to me.”
Which absolutely destroys Joker emotionally.
And honestly? This movie takes the long-running joke about Batman and Joker basically having a weird toxic relationship and turns the ENTIRE FILM into that concept.
This is basically: A bromance breakup comedy disguised as a Batman movie.
And somehow it completely works.
Meanwhile Bruce Wayne accidentally adopts Dick Grayson because Bruce Wayne is apparently so emotionally disconnected from reality that he accidentally agrees to adopt a child while barely listening to him.
And honestly? That joke never stops being funny.
Dick Grayson is an orphan at a charity event, asks Bruce if he can adopt him, and Bruce is so distracted and self-absorbed that he unknowingly says yes 😭
So now Bruce suddenly has a son.
Wonderful.
The movie then introduces Barbara Gordon, who wants Gotham’s police and Batman to actually work together instead of Batman constantly acting like an emotionally unstable gargoyle lurking on rooftops.
Batman of course hates this idea because this version of Batman believes teamwork is basically a disease.
Then eventually Joker unleashes absolute chaos involving the Phantom Zone, causing villains and characters from all kinds of franchises to invade Gotham.
And honestly? This movie completely loses its mind in the third act in the BEST possible way.
👥 Character Rundown
Will Arnett as Batman is honestly PERFECT casting.
This version of Batman is basically every exaggerated Batman stereotype rolled into one person:
emotionally distant
obsessed with darkness
constantly dramatic
refuses emotional connection
listens to edgy music alone in the Batcave 😭
And Arnett commits fully to the bit.
But what makes the performance work is that underneath all the jokes, there actually IS emotional vulnerability there. Batman acts ridiculous because he’s terrified of attachment and losing people again.
The movie jokes about Batman’s trauma constantly, but weirdly enough it also understands Batman emotionally better than some serious adaptations do.
Michael Cera as Robin is hilarious because Dick Grayson is basically pure sunshine colliding directly into Batman’s emotional brick wall. He’s energetic, optimistic, weirdly innocent, and completely excited to be Batman’s sidekick while Batman internally dies every time Robin calls him “best friend” 😭
Rosario Dawson as Barbara Gordon works really well too. She’s smart, capable, and acts as the voice of reason in a city full of maniacs and emotionally damaged LEGO people.
Then there’s Joker.
Zach Galifianakis gives Joker this weirdly needy, emotionally insecure energy that honestly makes him one of the funniest versions of the character.
This Joker genuinely wants Batman’s validation.
Not money. Not power. Not world domination.
Emotional acknowledgment 😭
The man literally spends the movie upset because Batman won’t publicly admit:
> “You are my greatest enemy.”
And honestly? That is the FUNNIEST possible motivation for Joker.
The supporting cast is also packed with DC references. Alfred is great here because he spends most of the movie acting like Bruce Wayne’s exhausted father figure trying desperately to get this emotionally broken billionaire to behave like a functional human being for once.
⏱️ Pacing / Story Flow
This movie moves FAST.
Like genuinely fast.
The jokes barely stop. The references barely stop. The visual gags barely stop. The movie basically throws Batman jokes directly into your face every thirty seconds.
But honestly? That energy works for LEGO Batman.
The pacing stays entertaining because the movie constantly escalates its insanity. It starts as a Batman/Joker emotional comedy, then slowly becomes:
a Batman family story
a giant multiverse crossover
a parody of Batman history
and eventually a full-on LEGO apocalypse movie 😭
And somehow it all still feels cohesive.
The Phantom Zone stuff especially is absolutely unhinged because suddenly Gotham is dealing with:
King Kong
Gremlins
Voldemort
Daleks
giant monsters
random franchise villains
This movie genuinely feels like a child dumping every toy onto the floor at once and screaming:
> “EVERYBODY FIGHT.”
And honestly? Respect.
✅ Pros
The humor is fantastic.
This movie UNDERSTANDS Batman history. It constantly references old movies, comics, shows, costumes, and Batman tropes in ways that actually reward longtime fans.
The movie is hilarious while also weirdly emotionally sincere underneath all the jokes.
Will Arnett is incredible as Batman.
The animation looks gorgeous. The LEGO style somehow makes Gotham feel both ridiculous and visually impressive at the same time.
The Batman/Joker dynamic is comedy gold.
And honestly? This might be one of the best Batman FAMILY stories in movie form because the emotional core is literally Batman learning to let people into his life.
That’s actually very Batman when you strip away the LEGO insanity.
❌ Cons
Honestly there are only a few small issues.
The movie moves SO fast sometimes that certain emotional beats get brushed past quickly because another joke immediately arrives.
The third act becomes complete chaos, which worked for me personally, but I can absolutely see some people finding it a little too random or overstimulating.
And if somebody doesn’t like self-aware comedy or Batman parody humor, this movie probably won’t land for them at all because the entire thing is basically DC roasting Batman lovingly for two hours straight.
🧨 Final Thoughts
The Lego Batman Movie had absolutely no right being this good.
This could have easily just been: “Hey kids look Batman LEGO movie buy toys now.”
Instead it became one of the funniest and most self-aware Batman films ever made.
The movie understands Batman’s history. It understands Joker’s obsession with Batman. It understands Bruce Wayne’s emotional isolation.
It just presents all of that through nonstop LEGO chaos and absurd comedy 😭
And honestly? That’s what makes it special.
Underneath all the jokes and explosions and random crossover nonsense is a genuinely sweet story about Batman learning he doesn’t have to be alone forever.
Which is honestly kinda wholesome.
Also this movie deserves credit for somehow turning:
> “Batman and Joker have relationship issues.”
…into an actual emotional storyline 😭
That should not work. And yet somehow it absolutely does.
⭐ Rating
9/10
One of the funniest Batman movies ever made and honestly one of the most entertaining LEGO films in general.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Alright y’all.
From here on out we’re talking FULL spoilers for The Lego Batman Movie.
And yes… we gotta talk about the world’s weirdest Batman/Joker relationship drama 😭
🩸 Spoilers
The opening plane sequence immediately tells you exactly what kind of movie this is.
Batman is narrating himself dramatically while fighting villains because apparently this version of Batman cannot exist without treating every moment like the coolest thing ever filmed 😭
Then Joker gets genuinely upset because Batman refuses to emotionally acknowledge him as his greatest enemy.
And honestly? That’s the entire emotional conflict of the movie.
Joker is basically sitting there going:
> “WHY WON’T YOU VALIDATE OUR TOXIC RELATIONSHIP.”
Meanwhile Batman keeps denying they have any emotional connection whatsoever.
The funniest part is Batman denying Joker hurts Joker MORE than actually losing fights does.
The movie basically treats Joker like a rejected ex-boyfriend and it’s incredible 😭
Then there’s the Dick Grayson adoption scene.
Bruce Wayne accidentally adopting a child because he wasn’t paying attention is PEAK LEGO Batman humor.
The fact Bruce spends a huge chunk of the movie trying to avoid acknowledging he accidentally became a father is amazing.
Robin meanwhile immediately treats Batman like they’re best friends forever while Bruce internally looks spiritually exhausted every time Robin speaks 😭
Barbara Gordon becoming commissioner also creates one of the better emotional conflicts because she correctly points out Batman’s lone wolf behavior is unhealthy and ineffective.
Batman absolutely HATES hearing this because this version of Bruce is emotionally allergic to teamwork.
Then Joker gets himself intentionally sent to the Phantom Zone specifically because he knows Batman will come after him.
That is insane levels of emotional manipulation 😭
And the Phantom Zone itself is hilarious because it basically becomes Warner Bros and pop culture throwing random villains into Gotham like:
> “Sure why not.”
Suddenly:
Voldemort is here
King Kong is here
Gremlins are here
Daleks are here
giant monsters are here
The movie completely abandons sanity and honestly becomes stronger because of it.
Then the city literally starts splitting apart during the finale because Gotham cannot survive one emotionally unstable Batman/Joker argument 😭
And the emotional climax is genuinely hilarious because Batman FINALLY admits Joker is his greatest enemy.
Which emotionally heals Joker instantly.
This movie literally ends with Batman finally validating Joker’s feelings enough to save Gotham.
That is the dumbest and funniest possible resolution.
But weirdly enough… it also works emotionally because the actual message is Batman learning to emotionally connect with people instead of isolating himself forever.
Bruce accepts Robin. He accepts Barbara. He accepts Alfred. He accepts teamwork.
And honestly? For a LEGO comedy movie, that’s a surprisingly solid Batman arc.
