Green Lantern (2011)

Green Lantern (2011) Review 💚🟢

Bright ideas… dim execution.

Let’s start by showing y’all the trailers shall we?

Back in 2011, Warner Bros. clearly wanted Green Lantern to become DC’s answer to Iron Man. Looking back at the trailers, I can actually see why. The Green Lantern mythology is one of the coolest concepts in comics. An intergalactic police force, hundreds of alien races, and a ring that can create anything you can imagine? On paper, that’s an awesome idea for a blockbuster.

Unfortunately, the movie never fully lives up to that potential. I don’t think it’s nearly as bad as its reputation suggests, but it’s definitely a movie that leaves you thinking, “This could’ve been so much better.”

Non-Spoiler Plot Overview

The film follows Hal Jordan, a fearless but reckless test pilot who is chosen by a dying alien to become the first human member of the Green Lantern Corps. Given one of the most powerful weapons in the universe, Hal must overcome his fear while stopping Parallax, an ancient entity that feeds on fear and threatens countless worlds.

It’s a simple superhero origin story that’s easy to follow, even if you’ve never read a Green Lantern comic.

Character Rundown

Ryan Reynolds is honestly pretty good as Hal Jordan. Even before becoming Deadpool, you can already see his sarcastic charm shining through. I don’t think he was ever the problem with this movie.

Blake Lively is fine as Carol Ferris. She has decent chemistry with Reynolds, but the movie doesn’t give her much to do outside of supporting Hal.

Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond was actually my favorite villain in the movie. His transformation into this grotesque, mutated version of himself was a really weird creative choice. I never expected body horror in a Green Lantern movie, but I’ll give the film credit—it made him memorable and genuinely creepy.

Then there’s Mark Strong as Sinestro.

Perfect casting.

Every scene he’s in is great, and he completely feels like Sinestro straight from the comics.

Looking back at the cast today is honestly kind of funny.

You’ve got Ryan Reynolds before he became synonymous with Deadpool.

You’ve got Mark Strong.

You’ve even got Geoffrey Rush—Captain Barbossa himself—voicing Tomar-Re.

What a weird cast to look back on in hindsight.

Pacing / Episode Flow

The movie moves at a decent pace. I was never bored, but I also wasn’t fully invested. It spends a lot of time explaining Green Lantern lore and introducing Oa and the Corps, but it sometimes feels like it’s trying to set up a franchise before making this movie stand on its own.

Pros

Ryan Reynolds is a likable lead.

Mark Strong absolutely nails Sinestro.

Peter Sarsgaard’s body horror transformation is one of the most memorable parts of the movie. It’s strange, uncomfortable, and honestly kind of refreshing because it isn’t your typical comic book villain design.

I also liked that they actually showed Oa and embraced the larger Green Lantern universe instead of keeping everything on Earth.

Cons

The CGI has aged… pretty badly. The digital Green Lantern suit still looks distracting, and some of the effects feel unfinished.

Parallax also never really worked for me. He’s supposed to be this terrifying cosmic threat, but he mostly comes across as a giant floating cloud. Hector Hammond honestly ended up being the more interesting villain.

The movie also feels like it’s trying to juggle too many ideas at once. Between Hal’s origin, the Green Lantern Corps, Parallax, Hector Hammond, and Sinestro, it never fully finds its balance.

Final Thoughts

I don’t hate Green Lantern.

Honestly, I think the internet has been a little too harsh on it over the years.

Is it a great superhero movie?

No.

Is it one of the worst superhero movies ever made?

I really don’t think so.

There are enough things I genuinely enjoy that I can’t bring myself to dislike it. Ryan Reynolds is solid, Mark Strong is excellent, Hector Hammond was surprisingly creepy, and while the body horror was an odd choice, I respected that they tried something different.

At the end of the day, this movie is simply a massive case of wasted potential. All the pieces were there. They just never came together into the movie they could’ve made.

Rating

5/10

A generous 5/10. There are elements I genuinely like, but overall it’s just an average superhero movie that never reaches the heights Green Lantern deserved.

Spoiler Warning

Everything beyond this point contains spoilers for Green Lantern (2011).

You’ve been warned.

Spoilers

My biggest disappointment has to be Sinestro.

Mark Strong is so good in the role that I honestly found myself wanting the movie to be about him. Instead, they save his biggest moment until the very end when he puts on the yellow ring. It’s a cool tease… but it also feels like they were saving the movie I actually wanted to watch for a sequel that never happened.

Parallax was another issue. I think they went way too big for Hal Jordan’s very first movie. Instead of introducing Green Lantern with a more personal threat, they immediately jump to a giant cosmic entity. The stakes are huge, but because we barely know Hal yet, the emotional investment isn’t really there.

Hector Hammond, on the other hand, was surprisingly effective. Watching his body slowly mutate into something grotesque was unsettling. His enlarged head, his warped appearance, and the overall body horror gave the movie a unique identity, even if it felt more like something out of a horror film than a Green Lantern story.

The ending is also bittersweet because you can clearly see Warner Bros. had big plans. Sinestro taking the yellow ring was obviously setting up the sequel, and honestly, I think that sequel had the potential to be better than this movie. Hal Jordan versus Sinestro is the conflict I really wanted to see.

So while Green Lantern isn’t a movie I’d call good, it’s also not one I regret revisiting. Every time I watch it, I don’t think, “Wow, this is awful.” I think, “Man… they were so close to making something much better.” And that’s probably the most disappointing thing about it.

Here’s why im discussing this film today, because of the new Green Lantern TV Series that will drop in 1 week from today, here’s the trailer.
