Gods of Egypt (2016)

Gods of Egypt (2016) 💀

“What if Egyptian mythology… but everyone is a superhero and nobody is Egyptian.”

🎬 Let’s start by showing y’all the trailers shall we?

🧾 Non-Spoiler Plot Overview

So this movie drops you into a version of ancient Egypt where the gods are basically giant, glowing, armor-wearing superhumans who can turn into animals and fight like they’re in a video game.

You’ve got Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), who loses his throne and his eyes, Set (Gerard Butler), who takes over Egypt because apparently nobody could stop him, and a human thief named Bek (Brenton Thwaites) who somehow ends up being one of the most important people in the story.

From there, it becomes this big adventure where they’re trying to take down Set, restore order, and save Egypt.

That’s the plot.

And yes… it is as ridiculous as it sounds.

👥 Character Rundown

Gerard Butler as Set is easily the most entertaining part of this movie. He is not playing this subtle at all. He is going full energy, full villain mode, chewing scenery like it owes him money, and honestly? It works. He’s having fun, and you can tell.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Horus is your typical fallen hero trying to regain his power. He’s fine, but compared to Butler, he feels a bit more flat. He does what he needs to do, but he’s not the most exciting character.

Brenton Thwaites as Bek is your human character, and he’s basically there to give the audience someone to follow. He’s the “regular guy in a world of gods” type, and he’s okay, but nothing special.

Chadwick Boseman as Thoth shows up and honestly brings something different to the role. His performance is a bit more unique and memorable, even if it feels like it belongs in a slightly different movie.

Overall, the cast is doing their thing, but the tone of the movie is so wild that it’s hard to take any of it seriously.

⏱️ Pacing / Episode Flow

This movie does not slow down.

At all.

It just keeps going from one set piece to another, one fight to another, one location to another, like it’s trying to speedrun its own story.

There’s barely any time to breathe or really process anything before the next big moment happens. It’s not confusing like the last movie, but it is overwhelming.

🧠 Final Thoughts

This movie is not accurate.

This movie is not subtle.

This movie is not grounded.

But it is entertaining.

If you go into this expecting anything close to real Egyptian mythology, you’re going to have a bad time. This is very much “their version” of it, and by their version, I mean they just took the names and said, “yeah let’s do whatever we want.”

And honestly? If you accept that, it becomes a lot more enjoyable.

It’s one of those movies where you sit there and go, “this is dumb”… but also, “I’m kinda having fun.”

6/10

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Alright… spoilers from here on out 🚨

🧨 Spoilers

So Set basically takes over Egypt right at the start by killing Osiris and stealing Horus’ eyes, which is honestly a wild opening move. The movie immediately goes all in on its chaos.

Horus spends most of the movie trying to regain his power, and a big part of that is literally getting his eyes back. And yes, the movie treats his eyes like they’re some kind of ultimate power source.

Meanwhile, Bek is trying to save his girlfriend, which is your typical emotional anchor for the human side of the story, even though it feels very standard compared to everything else going on.

Set just keeps getting more powerful as the movie goes on, stacking abilities like he’s leveling up in a game. By the end, he’s basically unstoppable, and the final fight turns into this giant, over-the-top spectacle with gods transforming and flying around.

The movie leans heavily into visual spectacle over logic. Things just happen because they look cool, not because they make sense.

And honestly, that’s the whole movie.

🏁 Final Spoiler Thought

This movie is basically Egyptian mythology turned into a fantasy action video game, and it never once tries to be anything else.

🧾 Overall

It’s ridiculous.

It’s over-the-top.

It makes no sense.

But it’s entertaining if you let it be.

It’s one of those movies where you just sit back and go, “Alright… sure, why not.” 😄
