Angry Birds 2 (2019)

The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019) 🐦💥❄️

“Twice the Birds, Twice the Cringe.”

Lets start by showing y’all the trailers shall we?

📖 Non-Spoiler Plot Overview

The sequel picks up after Red and his friends defeated the pigs. Now, Red (Jason Sudeikis) basks in his hero status, constantly defending Bird Island from pig attacks and enjoying his newfound popularity. But a new threat emerges — a frozen island led by Zeta (Leslie Jones), a purple eagle who’s tired of her icy home and wants to take over both Bird and Pig islands.

This forces Red, Chuck, Bomb, and even their old enemies (the pigs) to team up on a mission to save their homes. The setup sounds promising — enemies becoming allies, a new villain, higher stakes. But just like the first movie, the execution gets bogged down in low-brow jokes and loud, unfocused storytelling.

✅ Minute Positives

The animation is even sharper and more colorful than the first.

The idea of birds and pigs teaming up could have been fun if handled better.

A few jokes land (mainly thanks to Leslie Jones’ energy as Zeta).

❌ Flaws (and why it’s another 3/10)

The humor somehow leans harder into bathroom gags, modern slang, and cringey “twerk” moments.

Red’s insecurity about being a hero feels like a watered-down rehash of the first movie’s arc.

Too many side plots (like Chuck’s sister Silver, or the hatchlings’ side adventure) clutter the main story.

The pacing drags — again, the movie takes forever to get to the action anyone actually wanted.

🎯 Final Thoughts

The Angry Birds sequel doubles down on everything that didn’t work the first time. The result? A film that’s noisier, busier, and even less funny. The villain Zeta has more personality than Leonard did in the first, but she’s stuck in a story that never gives her real weight. At the end of the day, it’s another cringey attempt to milk nostalgia from a phone app that was never meant to be stretched into a cinematic universe.

⭐ Rating

3/10 🐦❄️

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

🌀 Spoilers (Full Breakdown)

The movie starts with Red thriving as the hero of Bird Island. The pigs keep trying little schemes to get back at the birds, but Red always thwarts them — and he loves the attention. But cracks begin to show in Red’s confidence when it becomes clear his “hero” status might not last forever.

Enter Zeta, a purple eagle stuck on a frozen island with her own flock. She’s bitter about her icy life and hatches a plan to conquer both Bird and Pig islands using giant ice-ball weapons. This forces the birds and pigs to form an alliance — something Red struggles with, since he doesn’t trust Leonard at all.

The team expands with new characters, like Silver (Rachel Bloom), Chuck’s super-smart sister, who quickly clashes with Red. Meanwhile, side plots include a group of hatchlings trying to retrieve their lost eggs, which often feels like filler.

The “mission” plays out like a string of cartoon antics: disguises, slapstick failures, and endless pop-culture gags. The big infiltration of Zeta’s lair is played more for laughs than tension, with Red constantly trying to prove himself but messing up.

Eventually, Zeta reveals her real motivation: she’s lonely, frustrated, and wants a better life for her people. It’s a more sympathetic angle than Leonard’s mustache-twirling in the first film, but the writing never digs deeper than surface-level comedy.

The climax involves Red finally admitting he can’t do everything alone, the birds and pigs uniting to stop Zeta’s ice weapons, and of course, a big chaotic showdown. Zeta is defeated but not destroyed — instead, she finds a new family among the other characters. Red gets his “hero moment” again, but also learns to share the spotlight with Silver and the rest of the team.

And just like the first movie, it ends with… yep, another dance party. Because apparently, no animated kids’ movie can resist it.
