Joker Folie à Deux: Let’s start off with showing y’all the trailers shall we? So we can start nitpicking this film apart.
Ohhhhhhh boy, where do I even begin with this film? Well, let’s not push around the bushes. This film sucks ass…..u can tell there were no 2 Fucks given…..no wait scratch that there were 2 Fucks given….and those 2 Fucks were given straight towards Warner Brothers..
U can tell that Todd Phillips didn’t want to make this film, I think what gave that away was the fact he said he didn’t want to make a sequel….it was Warner Brothers who wanted him to make a sequel…and after seeing this film I can confirm 100% that is clearly the case…
I mean this film has 2 moments that seem where aimed at WB as a mockery…..ok let’s get this rating out of the way so we can break down this film, also don’t worry this won’t be a long review….wanna know why? Because there are only 2 locations in this film, uh huh I wish I was kidding.
Joker Folie à Deux? More like Joker Folie à DooDoo
Overall horrible a horrible film, plz Don’t go watch this film….in fact go watch The Penguin Show on Max, that show is made by people who actually care about making a good series.
The only positives I can and will give this film is,
• The movie looks gorgeous.
• Joaquin Phoenix keeps proving why he’s an Oscar-nominated actor.
• Lady Gaga does a good job with what she’s given. No offense to Lady Gaga but I prefer Margot Robbie’s version of Harley Quinn…then this film’s version, but I blame the script not the actress.
Also, the only reaction I had walking out of the theatre was it was a movie. Yep that’s definitely a reaction to a movie……it’s the only feelings I had, it was a film. It moved, I just don’t know about the rest.
But besides that? Nada, I hate the rest of this film….that’s if u can even call this a film. There’s barely a script here, this doesn’t feel like a sequel to the first film…but more of an epilogue that’s stretched out to 2 hours and 18 min long….yes this film is 2 hours and 18 min long, Christ lord save me now.
The so-called script is very ridiculous, also the best way I could describe this script is well if u watched murder courtroom cases then u already watched this film…..yeah that’s how predictable this script is. It just so happens to have elements of songs and dancing tossed into it.
Also another major negative against this film, the film is just so forgettable. Heck, I’m having to at this moment rush this review out as we speak before I forget any scenes….because I have a feeling I’m gonna wake up tomorrow completely unaware of what I just watched last night which is tonight btw.
On a side note, this film feels like Todd Phillips is insulting the audience by deconstructing the character of the Joker and just focusing around Arthur Fleck…it’s almost like he’s saying look u the audience are no different than these cult followers of the Joker because u don’t care about Arthur Fleck. U just care about Joker and that is a bad thing.
Wow really? U don’t say, no shite Sherlock I know he’s a bad character….I just wanted to enjoy myself for 2 and a half hours, let me do so. It’s a comic book film. Stop being so serious “Why so serious”.
This film feels like a 2-hour and 18 min uneventful fever dream in all the wrong ways possible, thanks WB I hope it was worth it for badly wanting a sequel…..jeepers why can’t companies just allow one-off films?
Also, I feel like this film is one big troll to everyone. Not just WB but to the fans of the first film and the superhero genre or comic book genre if u will….this film seems like a vanity project made out of spite.
But here’s what amuses me, the fact that WB gave Todd Phillips $250 million dollars to make this film. Also allowed this film to be a musical because he pitched it as that, keep in mind a genre that can’t physically reach a billion dollars for some reason.
Also allowed Todd Phillips to make a film that would deconstruct Joker as a character because he hates him. Is so baffling to me, like at what point would logically WB look at this and think ok maybe this was a bad idea? So in a way, WB got what they Fucking deserved I guess.
Like seriously where are they gonna draw a line at any point? Again this is hysterical that this film even exists, does that mean it’s good? Heck no. It’s still insulting because this film smacks people in the foot for everyone enjoying the first film…it’s like he had zero respect to give to anyone while making this vanity project.
Also keep in mind the first film was just a repackaged Taxi Driver….it borrowed heavily from that film, so the first Joker film isn’t even an original story. Again I’m left baffled.
U know what I take back what I said, this film doesn’t feel like a 2-hour and 18-minute uneventful fever dream….no this film feels like a 2-hour and 18-minute joke that so happens to cost $250 million. Now I’m just waiting for the punchline, wait a minute I think we’re the punchline…as in we’re getting punched in the stomach for even enjoying the first film.
I will say though after seeing this film, I now don’t like the first film at all…thanks, yeah that should say a lot about how bad this film is. The film retroactively ruins the first film. I think Todd Phillips hates the audience who loved the first film, this film was one giant F you towards the people who praised the first film.
So since there’s no respect here given, I also will not be giving any respect to Todd Phillips.
This film will get a solid 1/10, I don’t recommend this film. Anyways warning spoilers ahead y’all been warned.
So here’s the first Fuck given straight to Warner Brothers…the film opens up with this intro music
Yeah, that’s the way this film opens up with, I kid u not…. an animated recreation of the ending of the last film…accompanied by this Looney Tunes intro theme….the name of the fake cartoon at the beginning is called Jokers Shadow…..yep, so we end up spending what 3 and a half min watching a Looney Tunes inspired recreation of the ending of Joker 1…but this time Joker is physically arguing with his shadow who’s alive I guess? Sighhhh. Were off to a great start.
Also the animation of this toon doesn’t seem to be irs best, as if it was made by the Z team of animators.
Anyways the Toon ends with 3 cops mildly jogging in saying hup hup hup hup hup…and then they beat him up, sighhhh.
BTW no DC logo pops up….which is weird, however, the first movie didn’t have a DC logo either….it’s because they didn’t want to associate both films with any DC film or comic lore….ok makes sense.
So now the film begins and look I’m gonna save y’all the trouble of having to read this beat by beat….I’m just gonna instead mention the highlights? Because this first half is of Arkham Asylum, the 2nd half is the courtroom. So here’s ur highlights?
• Arthur Fleck starts odd the entire beginning as a mute who doesn’t talk…..I see we’re taking some inspiration from that comic where he becomes a vegetable when Batman vanishes….except this is without Batman.
• there’s a cop named Jackie (played by Brandon Gleeson) (yes Mad Eye Moodie from Harry Potter) who’s nicer to Arthur….well I say nicer but he’s still mean….. he and the cops keep asking him each day hey Author got a joke for us?
He gives him a cigarette to smoke every once and a while when he tells them a joke….so I guess u could say they are best best pals? Except no not really…one scene where they are walking to a room and Arthur tells him a joke, so he gives Arthur a cigarette….they continue to walk, and Arthur pats Jackie on the back and says thanks friend….and Jackie smacks him on the back of the head…
Ok won’t lie I laughed at that scene.
Also Joker I guess has a fanboy in prison, some prisoner we see who just stares at him sometimes ominously. More on him later.
• Joker or Arthur gets put into singing class thanks to Jackie because I guess he’s been a good lad? Anyways there he meets a fan girl named Lee (played by Lady Gaga) (yes Harley doesn’t go by Harley Quinzel in this film. Nor is she a physiatrist, no she’s a woman named Lee who’s an insane person who is in prison)
See where playing very loose with the source material here, anyways she’s obsessed with him, like a lot obsessed with him…she tells him that she burned down her mother’s house and that her mom sent her to Arkham, also she grew up in the streets where Arthur was born….psssst spoiler alert that all turns out to be a lie.
Also, she’s nuts, during a scene where the prisoners and cops are watching a film…she stands up and goes into the corner to take a smoke and decides to set a fire by lighting up her entire pack of matches then she tosses it on the floor so she can run away with Fleck…uh huh.
Turns out she didn’t grow up there…she lives in the upper streets, her parents are not dead and her dad is a doctor…..she’s rich, and she put herself in the Looney bin just so she can see Arthur…..wow talk about a pathetic romantic story.
BTW did I forget to mention this film is filled with random moments of the film stopping and Arthur Fleck randomly imagining himself…or himself with Gaga singing on stage or dancing and singing…why? IDK, all I know is it killed the tone of the film.
• The town is split, some think he’s a hero and needs to be set free (well Joker should be set free), others think he’s Looney and needs medical help, and others think (including Harvey Dent) (yes Harvey is in this film for no reason) thinks he deserves the death penalty. Womp womp. Because he killed 5 people, as I said womp womp.
Or 6 people, he killed his mom but no one else knows that, once again womp womp.
• btw sometimes this film is just baffling….there’s one scene where Joker is in a confined lock up, and Hadley…wait more like Har-Lee (eheheheh see what i did there?), is in his room with him…
She tells him she’s being deported from Arkham, then she puts Joker makeup on his face, then they hump each other…..but the scene after this he doesn’t have the makeup on, so did that happen in his head? This script feels like it’s just random things put together in the wrong order…which I guess explains this news article info I just found.
‘Joker 2’ Team Met ‘Very Often’ in Joaquin Phoenix’s Trailer to ‘Tear the Script Up and Start All Over’: ‘It’s Three Hours Later and You’re Rewriting It on a Napkin’
Well, that explains a lot, no wonder why this film’s script felt like a mess.
Clearly, it didn’t because she later on says she’s pregnant, so uh wait a minute did that scene happen in his head or not? The movie now is just being confusing because for the sake of being confusing.
• his lawyer wants to prove that Arthur is mentally ill and that Joker is a second personality….gee wonder how long that will work out. Also, his lawyer eventually tells him that he shouldn’t trust Lee ..she’s just manipulating him, yeah no shite…
BTW Arthur kisses his lawyer on the lips before he gets interviewed….uhhh ew. What’s the point of the interview? Who cares let’s just move on plz.
BTW this so-called movie definitely has scenes that are just here to make u feel uncomfortable….I’ll get to the second scene that will be majorly divisive. But for now, let’s get to the second freaking half of this film which is the courtroom….oh boy the courtroom, also oh boy didn’t the first half sound so intriguing? Well if it didn’t then tough shite. We’re only halfway done.
So now come to the second half and here are the highlights I guess, if u can even call them that.
• Harvey is trying to prove to the court that Joker isn’t insane but sane and should be sent to death.
• Harley was released from Arkham because she said they were getting too close to each other, turns out she checked herself out instead….so now she visits Fleck in the courtroom. Oh goodie.
• Harvey brings on some defendants such as
His accountant.
His neighbor who he thought that he was dating but turns out he was having hallucinations.
BTW I think this film retcons the first film….because there were implications he may or may not have killed both of them…I mean as soon as he left his neighbor’s room u can hear sirens in the distance.
At the end of the film after his accountant asks what’s so funny and he says u wouldn’t understand the joke, he walks out of the room with bloody footprints. So she’s dead.
But yet they’re not and somehow here in this film, yeah try making sense of anything I just said….I am just gonna pretend this movie never happened…and there’s only 1 Joker film.
This film was a horrible fever dream, I’m gonna wake up at any moment now and realize this film never happened.
And his small friend named Gerry, who witnessed Arthur murder another colleague of there’s in his apartment…now he is traumatized by that experience btw.
I will give this film some credit, this film has some dark moments….I mean while Arthur Fleck’s neighbor tells the courtroom about his mom…we find out what his mom thought about her own son…she despises Arthur, she finds his laughter annoying, and him to he too delusional.
She told him when he was a kid he was born to make people laugh, and he took that and ran with it to the point she finds him annoying. Wow, mother of the year.
• Arthur Fleck has hallucinations of him and Lee dancing and singing (I don’t give a shite).
BTW a little more on the musical numbers, they are horrible….it just pauses the film (puts it on hold) just for some big Broadway musical act where Lady Gaga and Fleck are singing and Fleck is dancing very pathetically…
Oh btw his singing was pretty dang bad, Lady Gaga did a great job at singing (of course she is because she’s a singer) but Joaquin Phoenix ohhhhhh boy….he can’t sing, the best way I can describe it is his musical numbers feel like a drunk doing Karaoke night…
These songs aren’t original songs, there are songs that exist already and they are just singing the songs….this is just Karaoke night….if u wanna hear these songs just go listen to the original songs. These aren’t that great.
• Arthur fires his lawyer and asks to be his own defendant….oh goodie I’m just so invested with what’s going on, plz tell me more.
• Joker comes back the next day dressed as Joker so he can defend himself…..what a completely sane thing to do.
Anyways he asks Gerry questions…..Gerry gets to Arthur emotionally….he tells him he’s been traumatized and can’t sleep or work anymore…he has to be in witness protection because they thought Joker would murder him, so Joker says no more questions….u can see this is all hitting him emotionally…
Huh funny Joker wouldn’t care if someone is hurt, I wonder if this film was bullshite? Oh wait a minute it was. Then I kid u not he ended his sentence with a “Th th th th th that’s all folks” ok calm down Porky Pig.
• but before I get to what I mean, I think it’s time to talk about gross scene number dos….so he goes back to Arkham and the 3 policemen are mad at him so they toss him around against the wall and drag him, they toss him into the shower and proceed to uhh Geaped him……
Yep, I’ll say that again they Graped him because they pissed at him, oh goodie…..what was Todd Phillip’s direction here with this scene? Why was this necessary?
This wasn’t necessary like at all, this was a disgusting thing to add in the film. Look I know this film is R-rated but this was just unnecessary, I feel violated watching that scene.
• Anyway moving on because I feel gross. So come the next day (remember how I said this film might be bullshite?) Well, Lee comes to the courtroom dressed up almost like a clown….then Joker takes the mic and a chair and the judge tells him to not turn this into a comedy show….
On a side tangent, this courtroom is a complete joke, nothing these guys said would ever be said in a courtroom…such as the judge saying to Arthur “Don’t make a mockery of my courtroom” All the while Arthur is allowed in dressed as a clown….ain’t no way any courtroom is gonna allow someone to enter the room dressed as a god damn clown.
Or the fact he also tells him “Don’t turn this courtroom into a comedy show” Then quick question why would u even allow him to take the mic and a stool and sit on it as if he’s about to turn this into a comedy act? Again no courtroom would allow this. I think I found those moments in this film completely funny for all the wrong reasons.
Because there’s nothing supposed to be funny in this film, this film is bleach and dark.
Anywaysy, Joker sits for a moment and then says there’s no Joker there’s only Arthur Fleck….ehhhhh got u, u been fooled by WB….this is all one early April Fools joke…now I’m waiting for the punchline, oh wait a minute I think we the fans were the punchline all a long (barf).
What made him wanna stop being the Joker is because the previous night he got Graped by the 3 cops…..wow that’s Zack Snyder levels of writing there. I ain’t gonna elaborate on that any further….if u know we’ll u know.
So yeah Joker was never real, just an imagination of his? The Fuck movie? Gee thanks I feel so much gratitude towards u…..this is totally how I wanted to spend my night, this is how I really wanted my Joker DC film to be represented as. As a freaking joke…
Well guess the joke is on us, end my existence now….also Lee leaves not happy at Fleck because he said Joker is dead. It’s just me. I don’t want to be Joker anymore I wanna die…want things to blow up and restart my life.
Why do I have a feeling this scene is a meta-commentary of how Todd Phillips felt while making this film? He was like y’all wanted this. I hate this, thanks y’all u forced me to do this…now I want it done, bye. Jeepers grow up dude.
But I will say this though the film’s whole storyline was about identity…..Arthur wanted attention his whole life, and he got it in the form of becoming a murderer, but that’s not who he is. he always wanted to be loved hence why he thought Lee was in love with him but turns out nah she just loves the Joker, and was manipulating him.
He came to terms with and finally realized this wasn’t me and that I needed to come to terms with what I did and who I was. So in that way, I can understand where Todd Phillips was going for….but on the other hand, don’t call this Joker, this is more like Arthur Fleck the movie.
• anyways next day verdict is given and he’s found guilty, wow what a shocker…he starts laughing then a bomb goes off, killing everyone inside except for Fleck….oh and Harvey is still alive but he has some burns on the side of his face…..making this look like an underwhelming 2 face I think I’ve ever seen….the guy still has his full hair, his clothes aren’t burnt….it’s just half his face has some burn marks or holes in them. Womp womp.
He goes outside and 2 followers of his, 1 of which are dressed as him, take him into a car and drive him away…
He gets out of the car and runs to his apartment where he meets Lee, she’s upset at him and basically says what we had was a fantasy dream, and Nahhh I don’t want any of it now…u said Joker is dead…sorry not sorry, huh?
Ladies and gentlemen Lady Gaga as Har-Lee……she kinda just didn’t really make an imprint on this film in my opinion, she’s just there I guess….good job though but ehhh.
I guess we should have known that Harley only cared about the delusion she was creating for Joker and her….I mean the film is called Folie à Deux….which means a shared delusion.
Also she was supposed to represent the audience who only preferred Joker over Fleck. I hate thus film.
Then the cops come and arrest him, just for Arthur to be put back into prison? Wait hold up hold up what was the point of this film? Let me simply break this down for y’all so y’all can see how dumb this film is…this film just goes in a fl circle.
He starts off in Arkham.
He meets Harley or Lee.
He gets sent to court.
A bomb gets set off outside the courtroom blowing the place up.
Joker runs off to Harley just for her to say what we had was a dream and Nah I don’t want it anymore.
So basically Lee fell in love with Joker, and now since Joker isn’t a thing…she’s no longer in love, yeah she’s been manipulating him.
This woman is just a stalker, she took advantage of a mentally ill timid guy. Also, she locked herself in Arkham Asylum in prison just to meet him.
Oh, also she’s singing at him while he’s putting his fingers in and around her mouth to get her to be quiet so they can talk. The hell am I watching here?
Also, this film felt like a degression of The Joker….at the end of the first film he accepted the personality of The Joker, but here he’s back to being Timid Arthur Fleck for the majority of this film, it’s like one giant F you to thr fans for enjoying him in the first film when ur not supposed to.
Then Fleck gets arrested just to end up in Arkham again?
So what was the point of this film? He started in Arkham, just to end back up in Arkham again at the end of the film. That’s not development at all…that’s the exact opposite of development, I think that’s called reverse development…..all we did was spend 2 hours and 18 min watching an actual circle of events happen just for it to loop all the way back around to basically nothing…
Thanks, movie for wasting our time, I feel appreciated…..oh don’t worry the film is almost over, now comes the Egregious part (yeah bet y’all saying really now is the Egregious part? This entire film wasn’t already Egregious?)
So the film ends with Arthur Fleck being told he has a visitor, so he is walking down the hall with a cop….the cop gets far ahead of him, remember that silent guy who stared at Arthur? Well, he follows Arthur…
He asks Arthur if he can tell him a joke. He says sure, then he tells Arthur his joke then ends it with u get what u Fucking deserve. Then he shanks Arthur (if u don’t know what that means, I am talking about he takes a knife and stabs Arthur multiple times) until he bleeds out…
U have got to be kidding me! Oh, but it gets worse, because as Arthur falls and dies and lays there and dies. We can see behind him (kinda because the focus on that second prisoner is all blurry) starting to cut open his cheeks and laugh Maniacally……
Yes, this random guy who’s been staring at Arthur for most of this film turns out to be the real Joker…..well it’s officially I officially feel cheated out of my money.
Again meta-commentary, this random guy is supposed to be us the fans who are disappointed with this joker…..I swear I think Todd needs go be black listed from Hollywood just saying.
This ending right here is what’s definitely gonna be divisive, btw my thoughts are this ending feels like a bad fan fic u would have heard of from the fans after they saw Joker 2019. The one where they said this Joker isn’t the real Joker….but he will go on to inspire the real Joker.
Well turns out to be not fan fiction, because this is what Todd Phillips had to say back when the first film came out.
“There’s many ways to look at the movie. [Arthur] might not be Joker,” Phillips said in a behind-the-scenes featurette on the movie’s home release entitled Joker: Vision & Fury. “This is just a version of a Joker origin. It’s just the version this guy is telling in this room at a mental institution. I don’t know that he’s the most reliable narrator in the world, you know what I’m saying?”
So I guess now we can say it’s confirmed, honestly, I should have seen this coming because of that massive hint he told us 5 years ago, and the fact this sequel kept focusing on this random prisoner who keeps staring at him in a sinister way.
I will say this though in a way I see why they went with this route, I mean think of it tons of people idolized him as Joker….but as soon as he on live TV said he’s not the Joker he’s just Arthur….it probably pissed off most of his followers….
See to a point it makes sense that some of his followers wouldn’t do anything as far as killing him but what If a deranged person who’s locked in an insane Asylum who warships him. Is betrayed by him.
So I’ll give that angle some points.
However this can’t be expressed enough, this ending is extremely stupid because of the fact there were these fan theories about this scenario…..the fact that this Joker isn’t the real Joker and he will end up down the road inspiring the real Joker, that theory was dumb. But it seems like Todd Phillips said nah ah that fan theory is brilliant.
This is dumb, u took a Fan Theory, a freaking fan theory from Reddit….and YouTube, and placed it in ur film…thinking u were making some sort of art? Hey Todd Phillip’s thanks but no thanks I don’t want this
This just baffles me, again I’ll state again this film had decisions that made me think huh? Also, I’ll say this again after seeing these 2 films….ain’t no reason why these 2 films should be called The Joker, especially since by this film’s logic Arthur isn’t the Joker….he’s just some pathetic weirdo.
Why did they need to call this Joker? This has nothing to do with the Joker. Like at all.
I guess that I wasn’t expecting the ending to go to this depth of delusions that it does…..bta another way I look at this ending is that this is another big giant F you to Warner Brothers, he’s basically saying there u can now no longer make more movies using my Joker and u can’t have me come back to make more. U can’t ever bring me back and don’t u dare.
Because he’s dead now, I mean good on u Todd Phillips u stick it to the man….but plz keep us fans out of it, because in doing so of taking a jab at Warner Brothers u end up putting the fans in the crossfire. And we have to endure this film and Its baffling decisions…
On a side note this film doesn’t feel like a movie about The Joker, no instead it feels like a film about a random deranged person staring Joaquin Phoenix…..I swear u could retitle the name of this film to The Psychopath, Staring Joaquin Phoenix and it would fit better…
Because nothing really about this film feels like a Joker film, as stated before the only joke was us I guess.
Also the only moment where he feels like The Joker and actually kills people is in a scene during the courtroom where he starts to invision himself as the Joker….and bashing in people’s heads with a stole….then goes up to the judge and takes his hammer ans bashes his head in…
That scene was cool, just wish it didn’t have singing and dancing in the scene! But still…also too bad it all happened it in his head.
Also, wait hold up sorry what? The guy is carving a smile in his cheeks? Sorry, Todd Phillips but this isn’t Heath Ledgers Joker….why’s that ur inspiration here exactly? Not every Joker is a guy with scars across his lips. But this is the version u decided to take inspiration from? F off. Now I can see fans coming up with weird breakdown videos of how this is a prequel to Heath Ledgers Joker….except wouldn’t make sense because the first film takes place in 1989, and this film takes place 2ish years later…
So realistically that new Joker would be 4 years old in this time period, but he ain’t…..so once again fans I beg u plz Don’t connect the nonexisting dots between this film and The Dark Knight….which is still a great film to this day btw.
Also what Todd Phillips said recently had me well, to put it bluntly, baffled. He said and I quote “If Joker in my universe met Batman. He would be in awwww of Batman because he’s a Sigma Male” Yep Todd Phillips in his own words called Batman a Sigma male…
Guys, what time period are we living in? We’re a director who is calling Batman a Sigma, so does that mean Riddler is a Beta male? Or is The Penguin a Beta Male?
Also side note recently Todd Phillips said this “u know what I’m done making DC films or comic films” ok good, but this is the way he went out huh? With 2 big F you to the fans and the corporations……again we the fans are the end of the punchline. We were the fools.
Hey Todd Phillips thanks again for giving us Hoker 2019 (that film is great, not fantastic but it’s great) but this film can go die in the corner of a dark room…..btw to end this on a positive I will say I glad this is how Todd Phillips gave WB a big F you….he spent tons of there money they gave him and made this film with the money.
Hey that’s a great way to harm corporations, so good job Todd Phillips I give u praise because I don’t like corporations but hey that’s just me.
Anyways the end, yeah we’re done here…..I hope y’all enjoyed this review, I’ll say this plz never watch this film like ever…it’s slow and Monotonous…anyways here’s a teaser for my next review, Till next time.
