Star Wars Skeleton Crew: Let’s start off with showing y’all the trailers shall we?
So firstly before we get too far I want to get a few things out of the way.
Firstly I’m gonna get this out of the way. I actually enjoyed this series like a lot, it captures that childhood wonder and feeling of being a fan of Star Wars (I’ll explain what I mean by that soon).
Secondly unfortunately this series has an all time low viewership, which is unfortunate because I do believe people should check this show out. I’d love Disney to make a season 2, but with how low the viewership is I doubt we’ll get a season 2.
Here’s to hoping, we especially need a season 2 with the way this show ends, it does end abruptly. There’s this charm to this show as I said, it captures that essence of when fans grew up with the original Star Wars.
Also, this show is very much just a Star Wars version of the Goonies.
Plz if any of y’all haven’t checked this show out yet plz do so, u won’t be disappointed. Also yes I’m absolutely surprised I loved this show.
If y’all can look past the suburbs being in Star Wars then I think y’all will have a fun time with this show, also here’s the list of the names of our main characters and the actors who play them.
Jude Law: Jod Na Nawood
Ravi Cabot-Conyers: Wim
Ryan Kiera Armstrong: Fern
Kyriana Kratter: KB
Robert Timothy Smith: Neel
Nick Frost: SM-33
BTW hot take, me personally I don’t think Dave Filoni has made a single good Star Wars project, besides The Clone Wars and some of Rebels.
He really fumbled it with The Ahsoka show, this guy can’t let go of his creation. He’s like a kid having a favorite toy that he won’t let go of.
Also, I’m not invested in this Mando Verse that Dave and John are creating. Also yes Skeleton Crew is a part of this Mando Verse.
The reason I’m not invested is because well there’s the Mandalorian show, that show was only good until season 3 came along, and now I have no investment into the Mando film they are making and releasing.
Also, say what u will about the first 2 seasons of Mando, but there’s just no character development for Mando, in all 3 seasons his quote on quote character development amounted to. Hey I like this kid and this kid likes me, I think I’m gonna protect it, and this is the way.
Yeah, try telling me that’s character development. Because by the end of season 3 his still his stoic self who won’t take his helmet off.
Then there’s The Boba Fett show which turned an awesome badass bounty hunter character into a pushover who needs rescuing from a group of teenagers.
Then had Mando came in and stole his spotlight by having the last 3ish episodes be about him, gee thanks, Dave and John.
I’m getting sick and tired of Baby Yoda or Grogu, whatever we’re calling that thing. Then the Ahsoka show which somehow took the most interesting character and turned her into a bland stoic character.
Also ruined some of the Rebel’s characters by making Sabin into a brat who does what she wants even if there are consequences. But the final nail in the coffin was them turning Thrawn.
The tactician genius into a tactician idiot. See the thing is when ur writing a tactician genius, u need to have what’s the word genius script writers and a director.
Clearly, we didn’t have any of that, and yet he’s gonna be the Thanos threat to the galaxy? Keep in mind our lineup of heroes to stop him is
Mando
A baby
4 group of kids
Pushover Fett
Stoic Soka
Bratty Sabin
Goofy Ezra
Chopper
Zebb
Hera Syndulla
A group of bike gangs
And possibly CGI Luke Skywalker
Now plz tell me why should I be invested in this. Oh yes, let’s have these rag-tag group of eh people go up against the tactician idiot that’s known as Thrawn.
Also while at it let’s have a group of kids and a baby join the fight, because that makes sense.
Yeah, I’m fine, I don’t want any of this. I think after this show The Skeleton Crew, I think I’m done with Star Wars. I’m going back into retirement.
Oh and besides Andor season 2, but that’s not a part of the Mando Verse so that doesn’t count to what I’m talking about here.
Anyway, let’s get the rating out of the way so we can get into spoilers.
Overall I enjoyed this series a lot, is it perfect? Nope. There are at least 2 issues I have with this series, well 3.
1. The show ends abruptly.
2. Our main character Wim is absolutely annoying, he’s the type of kid who is slightly selfish and would believe anything just because someone did something that’s known with said person or location.
3. About 1 single thing in episode 4 gets solved off-screen to the point it just comes off as lazy writing.
So with that, I’ll give Star Wars Skeleton Crew a solid 8/10
Warning spoilers ahead y’all been warned.
So in this show we kick off with a group of pirates invading a New Republic ship.
They ram their vehicles into it, btw This entire opening feels like a ripoff of A New Hope, we got the men I’m the hallway getting ready to aim their guns.
The enemies come on board and get shot, this helmet-looking guy walks off after the shooting is done.
He plans to rob this ship of the money it has. Or at least he thinks the ship has gold. He tries interrogating a guy and forcing him to open this thing behind them that looks like a vault.
BTW word by word he just mimics Vader, the guy says we’re under the protection of The New Republic, and we have no currency on board.
Which then the captain says if that’s the case then why is this shaped like a vault.
Really Disney u couldn’t think of any clever writing? U just had to copy beat by beat A New Hope? Well, this isn’t the first time they did so. Anyway, this wolfman-looking creature right-hand man enters the vault and comes back and says many good people died just for chump change.
Yeah turns out there’s no money on board, so the captain gets dethroned. Hmmmmm I wonder who this captain is, since they don’t show us his face.
Anyways we get introduced to our 2 main characters
Wim and Kneel, Kneel is some sorta elephant alien species (no not clear on which). These 2 play fake lightsaber battles with each other.
They go to school together, and at their school, they will be taking a quiz that determines what they do for the rest of their lives. Hmmm sounds boring.
BTW he misses out on the test because he wakes up late and has to take a bike to school. Yes, u heard that right a bike.
This planet takes place in the suburbs where kids go to school, and ride bikes. Do homework and parents go do their mundane 9 to 5 jobs.
Plus this planet has busses, trains and cars (granted they are hover cars and busses and bikes but still).
Also in the world of Star Wars, there are Jrdi novels and toys, makes sense to me because it’s been over 50 years since the Jedi died, so why wouldn’t some corporation make products?
And before anyone says that’s not Star Wars, let me ask u this, why shouldn’t it be Star Wars? The galaxy is vast and massive. We’ve never got to explore outside of the reused typical planets that were used to.
Who’s to say that somewhere in this galaxy there’s not a planet that has kids growing up a normal life? Why does every planet have to be a war zone? So moving on, on the way to school on his bike. He finds a secret hatch in the woods that he instantly believes it’s a Jedi Temple.
Don’t ask me, he’s just that gullible, anyways he gets caught by security camera Droids that bring him to school to retention.
Their he meets this girl named Fern, she’s the daughter of a mother who’s in charge and working with the system. She plays by thr rules.
While Fern and her robot friend KB do rebellious things such as riding motorcycles to enter illegal races, but at moment they need new power converter for it.
So Wim is told by his dad to stop about this whole Jedi Thing, it’s time to grow up and u need to take the test. So what does he do? He sneaks off with Kneel that night to investigate the supposedly Jedi Temple, womp womp.
Guess who also shows up? Fern and KB, they trick the boys into digging up thr site for them, they plan to salvage whatever is inside for a converter, Fern reluctantly agrees to let the boys enter and explore if they help.
All 4 of them go inside and turns out the place is a ship, so basically Wim is an idiot.
Oh and speaking of idiotic things. He finds a green button and clicks it when Fern and KB turn on the power, and he clicks it. Even though he shouldn’t.
This causes the ship to come out of the ground and take off into space, all while Wims father is there looking for his son and witnesses the ship take off. Good job Wim good job.
Oh, things get worse, this robot on the ship named SM-33 was up and tried to deposit the kids. But Fern tricks SM-33 that she killed the original captain and now she’s the captain.
Good didn’t want Wim to be in charge, though her leadership might not be the best because SM-33 tells them of a nearby port that’s safe because they need to park to repair the ship.
So the kids can get back home to At Atin, which SM-33 keeps saying throughout this series “I can’t say I remember no At Atin” keep that in mind for later because he keeps saying it over and over again.
Hmmmm I wonder why? Anyways the kids gets to the port and are surrounded by threats without releasing it.
But they do find out 3 things.
1. They are way in over their heads.
2. Their planet At Atin is seen as a myth, no one believes it exists. When a random woman tries yanking them away to take them back home from this dangerous place, she says where y’all from? They say At Atin. Which the woman says ur gonna need to come up with a better story then that.
3. The port is filled with pirates, so SM-33 brought them to a pirate port because he is a pirate.
Anyways SM-33 tries to come and help the kids out but the kids get tossed in a cell by some pirates, SM-33 gets shut down and put into storage.
In their cell they encounter this adult who’s wearing a hood, he says he can help them get out and find their planet. He says the key is the way out of this cell. They point out we can’t reach it bozo.
But then this mysterious figure uses the force to grave the key and he pulls the hood down reveling himself to be Jude Law.
He helps them escape on the one term they allow him to come with them, he introduces himself as Jod Na Nawood, also Wim instantly believes he’s a Jedi.
Or as I’m gonna call him throughout this review as Jod Law.
All because he uses the force, uh huh keep that in mind for later. Anyways they sneak off and get to their ship that’s tied to a cable.
They won’t go anywhere without SM-33 the robot, Jod is willing to leave a robot behind but then convince him by saying aren’t u a Jedi? Aren’t Jedi’s not supposed to leave people behind?
So he says of course, I’ll be back. They try describing the robot to him by saying he has one eye and a creature inside it.
Jod locates SM-33 in the storage and wakes him up, which he says SM-33? Which SM-33 says maybe, who’s asking? Then a creature pops out his eye socket.
Then Jod says I’ll take that as a yes, so he makes it back to the ship with SM-33 after he encounters a previous pirate mate of his, oh so this Jod isn’t to be trusted.
BTW everyone they encounter does try to tell the kids to not trust Jod, they head to a moon planet where he knows a friend who’s some sora owl alien species.
She’s knowledgeable on books and maps, he’s sure she can help find their planet. They get their, he wants the kids she might stab them in the back which they say stab us in the back?
Which Jod says no not like really stabbing u, does that make sense? The kids say uh no.
Sigh these kids are a lost cause, well they get to the place and we find out he has a nickname which I think it’s Crimson Jack.
Something is suspicious here, she does try to help locate their planet by looking through coordinates, but Jod figures out she’s buying time.
He turns on a radio near her and on It is the rebels talking back to her, she has contacted the Rebels to come save the kids because she tells the kids Jod Law is not to be trusted.
But they head with him anyways, but KB tells the owl lady that she doesn’t fully trust him either but what other choice do they have? The owl lady says if u need any help u can contact me whenever.
So they get back to the ship but won’t let Jod back on the ship until he explains things on who he is. Then they try to get the attention of the rebels just to make Jod admit who he is. Because Crimson Jack seems like a suspicious name.
He says I’ll tell u everything on the ship. They say tell us now now now! He admits he’s like them, he’s lost and alone. And that he’s not a Jedi.
Wow no really, couldn’t tell. Anyways instead of talking about each individual episode let’s give a rundown of specific things that happen.
Oh also Fern tells Jod from now on he works for them and Fern is captain, Jod reluctantly agrees.
We get a subplot of the parents trying to figure out a way to get their kids back because they are starting to not believe in the system.
The droids aren’t doing their jobs correctly, so now these group of parents try to come up with a plan. Which involves one the parents handing a hacking tool to Wims dad so he can break into the system he works at.
He gets caught by his supervisor who is Ferns mother, she tells the robot to shut down and forget all this.
The father comes in and tries to explain the situation, he gets her to agree. She says what’s the plan? We’ll get to that plan soon.
Back to the kids, they find themselves on a planet that’s similar to At Atin but it’s a wasteland and there is a war going on, the kids get rescued by another kid and are brought to their civilizations.
Jod tries to help SM-33 get his memories back about At Atin because he can tell there’s something that SM-33 isn’t saying.
But then Jod gets surrounded by scavengers, they aim guns at him and say what flag do u work with? Jod just gives up and gets on his feet and says do u know what just shoot me now.
Lololo, yeah fair enough. Anyways the resistance group start training these 4 kids how to use guns. Kneel doesn’t want to use guns, so he and the head child leader of the resistance start bonding.
Honestly I like Kneel, out of all 4 of these kids he’s the most kid like, he has that child awkwardness that we all once had as a kid, he’s sweet and pure hearted.
He doesn’t want any war to happen. Unfortunately for him they put these 4 kids on the Frontline of the war just because, and they start to stand their ground when they think they hear their enemies coming towards them from the fog.
Instead it’s Jod Law, SM-33 and animal’s he rescued that belonged to the town folks? Yeah turns out completely off screen he negotiated with the enemy group by using the credits the kids had, to end this war once and for all.
Again completely off screen, keep in mind this war has been going on for years apparently and one guy just comes along and negotiates with credits to end the war.
Talk about plot convenience if I’ve ever heard one, anyways they tell him they are in his debt and what rewards does he want? He says those 4 kids.
So now Jod Law and the kids get taken to this underground place they were wanting to go to, they get shown the way. That child soldier leaves them and gives Kneel a kiss on thr forehead, awwww, telling him that maybe it’s time to bring happiness and hope to this planet.
So they get down to the pit where they find these map pillars that leaf to the locations of each planet, but the one to At Atin has been destroyed, SM-33 says I destroyed it. They ask him why? Which he says because the original captain told me to so no one could find it’s treasure.
They ask why didn’t u tell us before? Which SM-33 says tell u what? Fern says that u destroyed that map? Which SM-33 says what map? Fern says to At Atin, which SM-33 says I can’t say I remember no At Atin.
Ohhhhh ok something in his memories is overriding him to not tell them, he then starts attacking them and heads straight towards Kneel and pins him on the floor. Luckily Jod turns ofd SM-33 using the off button he had on his back for some reason.
So they wake up SM-33 and ask him to take them to At Atin, he obliges to and he takes them to another planet instead. Clearly this robot isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, instead this planet he took them too is a get away spa resort.
They are asked by ships do they have a reservation? Jod says sure. When they land he’s given some alcohol to drink and they go sign in, he pays off the front desk person to show him the names on the computer.
He points at a name and says yep that’s us, hmmm clever. Just then this pale female bounty hunter comes up to Jod, she knows him and he knows her. She calls him Silvo, oh great another name. Seriously how untrustworthy is Jod?
He is convinced since she’s here that must mean he’s gonna be ratted out, she gets very vague with him and says I got to go for now. So they head to their room and make a plan to find this symbol that SM-33 draws.
He said it’s a marking drawn into one of the caves, if we find it then that’s the location to a vault with tressure in it and the location to At Atin.
While they locate that, guess what happens? That bounty hunter contacts the pirates to tell them Jod is here dunn dunnn dunn. Anyways they find the vault.
The way they find it is Wim and Kneel make a quote on quote friends with this giant plug alien in a bathtub. He says entertain me and I’ll help u.
When Jod and the others show up, that slug says ohhh that’s Jod? Yeah don’t trust him. Hahahahahahah seriously can these kids not get a hint that maybe Jod is untrustworthy?
So they enter the vault, Jod starts to stand still, Fern starts getting nervous and says is our deal still in tact? He then says I don’t want to kill u, ohhhhhhhh! Turn over captain to me and I won’t have to harm u. Dunn dunnn dunn! What a twist.
Who would have thought Jod isn’t trust worthy?
Wim grabs a saber from a corner and turns it on upside down, Jod aims a knife at Ferns neck and holds her in a lockhold. She gives up her captain role.
So Jod Law tells SM-33 to hold the kids captive. Just then the kids stumble into a hole that opens up a secret passage if u will, then Jod grabs the lightsaber ohhhhh.
So the kids have gotten to the point in the story where they argue and split up into groups to make it back to the ship. Also Jod and SM-33 gets captured by the pirates.
He’s has to defend himself because he’s put on pirate trial. He convinces the group that At Atin is real and it has loads of wealth and money for them, because they always want more.
As for the kids, well Wim and KB team up while Kneel and Fern team up, KB starts becoming weaker and weaker, her circuits haven’t been replaced in a while.
So Wim gets to be the hero and repair the circuit in her neck which keeps her alive. Wow, that’s a shitty life to have, also she admits to Wim that she should just tell Fern her limitations but she just can’t.
Hence why she didn’t want to go with Fern the way she wanted to which was climbing up cliffs. She just can’t, honestly this was a powerful message. Could been hinted at more but still.
Anyways the 4 of them meet back up at the ship which is being taken away to a junkyard, they get inside. Fern apologies to KB, they power on the ship. As the ship is about to be Incinerated. The ship peals off its layer. Revealing the ship is an At Atin ship.
If any of that sounded Convoluticated to u then yes it kinda was.
Ooooooh. Jod realizes that is well and that the ship is the key to getting past the planet’s shield, the kids dock on the pirate ship to save SM-33 and kill the pirates.
Instead what happens is they get there, the werewolf captain tries to go on board, he gets grabbed by a claw and Jod shoots him in the head, taking off as captain.
He orders his men to go on board and hold the kids hostage. Just then a hologram message from the kids parents appear and it’s of them saying the kids aren’t in trouble but to plz come home.
Yep that was the parents plan, to get a message out to their kids. That is sweet, unfortunately Jod sees this entire message, so do the kids btw who are standing behind 2 guards behind Jod. They then tey to run up to Jod and take him out. Jod tries to make an order to SM-33.
SM-33 tells the captain that he’s only allowed to be in charge of one ship. Wim tries to call dibs on the ship but Jod (who’s now wearing that same mask from the beginning of the show) shushes him and says I call dibs.
The kids say they call un-dibs and take the ship, but Jod says that’s not how it works. Just then SM-33 punches Jod and says but it’s close enough for me….yayyyyyyy! I do believe SM-33 cares more about those kids than Jod.
I will say though I do have a bit of an issue with SM-33, it’s that he doesn’t do anything cohesively. He’s imminent on listening to the captain’s orders only, hence why he always asks Fern for orders.
Then why sometimes he will stare at Fern for justification on the order, but then there are scenes where he listens to someone else such as Jod without Ferns approval?
Heck, he orders SM-33 to drown those pirates in that pool of acid that was protecting that vault and SM-33 did it without approval from Fern.
Also, he attacks the kids once he remembers his previous order from the previous captain to kill anyone who asks about At Atin, yet the new captain Fern kept saying stop attacking but he doesn’t listen.
But then next episode he wakes up tied up. They ask him to not attack him and proceed to ask about At Atin. And he doesn’t attack them he just continues to do his orders from Fern.
But then worse, when Jod becomes captain, he just ignores Jod and punches him out all because Fern calls un-dibs on the ship that Jod just called dibs on. So essentially we have a Droid that decides what orders he takes on a whim, who he does or doesn’t want to follow at any given moment.
Who sometimes follows his own protocols, until he doesn’t. Which is dictated on what the script says he needs or doesn’t need to do.
Anyways, as they are about to take off they dump the knocked-out bodies off board and Jod wakes up and sneaks on the ship.
As they take off Jod shows up, SM-33 says I’ll handle this kids. Then Jod takes out his saber and slices SM-33 head off, noooooo!
He then tells the kids to huddle up and sit down now! He threatens them.
He says we’re gonna land this ship and u aren’t to say a word, if I even get a hint that u r gonna do something I will kill ur parents in front of u limb by limb.
Jeepers this got dark, then he points the ignited saber in front of the kids and starts slowly swinging it while saying I’m glad I got to see ue parents, now I know which one to kill first and slowly.
This is a kid’s show btw made by Disney. I’m impressed good job. Btw I really like that Jod who’s a pirate is using the saber as if it’s a sword.
Yes, I know that’s what lightsabers have always been basically, but what I mean by that here is he treats it more like a pirate sword. Because he’s a pirate, does that make sense?
Anyway he brings them back home, he tells the parents that they are in trouble and that they are to be kept under watch by security guards and to be taken home.
He then asks to be taken to the vaults so he can see the amount of money they have, shocker he’s happy with how much there is. Also, he has Ferns mother along with Fern take him to meet the person in charge.
It’s a robot who’s in charge, according to him the Jedi were all labeled traitors, so who is Jod Is he a Jedi or is he a pirate? Fern screams out Jod is a pirate, masquerading as a pirate so he and his gang can come down here and take over our planet.
The robot says I knew it, and has his men attack Jod, but since he has a lightsaber he gets the upper hand. Side note what the heck did that robot mean by the Jedi’s were labeled traitors?
Moving on, Wim convinces his dad to come help him save Fern. They both head out on speeder bikes, I love this scene it’s the father and son technically bonding and the dad learning to loosen up a bit.
The other 3 kids join to help, well 2 of them. KB goes and tries to pilot the At Atin ship away with the help of SM-33, yes he’s still alive but he has to hold his head because it’s severed so she’s driving the vehicle.
Jod lowers the shields momentarily to let his fleet come down, an attack starts to happen, it’s an invasion. Even though Jod says he doesn’t want anyone to die. He doesn’t want to ruin this normal lifestyle, he wants them to work for him.
They will do their mundane jobs but the money will go to him, can’t tell if he’s lying or not. Or is he really just that conflicted? A better word for that is he’s a fleshed-out villain with depth to him.
Anyway they make it to the controller room, Jod has killed the robot in charge which is how the shields went down momentarily because all the power went out for a few minutes.
KB contacts the owl lady to contact the rebels to come to help them, but Wim has to turn off the shield generator so the rebels can get in.
Also, the ship starts to crash and KB is flying so all her friends think she’s dead, they all witness the crash. Jod seems devastated, he says see what u done? See what happens when u don’t listen.
I didn’t want any of this. Then he aims his lightsaber at Wims father who’s on the floor.
Wim goes over to the lever ready to pull it to disable the shields.
Wim says u lied, ur no Jedi but now the real heroes are coming, Jod says no one is coming to save u, boy!
Jod takes a breath and tells him a bit of his backstory. He says when I was a kid I was all alone.
But then a Jedi found me and told me I had potential. She was only able to teach me a bit before she was gunned down in front of me for being a Jedi, at that moment I realized the galaxy doesn’t care about people like me.
U have to do what it takes to survive, damn that’s actually a sad backstory. It does make u feel something for Jod. He says get away from the lever or else I’ll kill ur dad and I don’t want that. His dad tells Wim to listen to him.
So Wim runs over, which gives the dad enough time to get up and smack Jod, the lightsaber rolls out of his hands and Wim picks it up.
The dad tries to go pull the lever but Jod is grabbing him, just then Fern’s mother helps and pulls the lever. The shields are disabled, and the rebellion comes and attacks the pirates ending their attack.
Jod looks at them with a sigh of defeat and he tosses his gun onto the floor, the tower they are in starts to shake so they have to leave.
They head to the elevator, Wim for some reason screams for Jod to come, all Jod does is stand and look at them. He then walks over to the window and witness his crews ships burning out of the sky.
Maybe a small part of Jod really did care for those 4 kids, who knows maybe one day he will get a redemption arc, that’s if Disney greenlits a season 2. Because this shows views did poorly.
Anyways show ends with the gang going to the crashed ship and find KB and SM-33 alive, they crashed into a pile a gold which softened the landing. They walk off as Wim looks up at the sky at the rebels which gives him hope.
He gives a smile and that’s the way this show ends, bet y’all now see what I mean by this show ended abruptly? This show does do a great job at making u want more, I seriously hope they renew this show for a season 2. I want more Jod, we need him.
We need to flesh out these kids, they have potential. Also plz we need more SM-33, he was great. Anyway hope y’all enjoyed this review, here’s a tease for the next reviews I’m working on. Till next time.
