Power Rangers Ninja Storm (2003)

๐ŸŒ€ Power Rangers: Ninja Storm Review (2003) ๐ŸŒ€

Letโ€™s start by showing yโ€™all the opening theme song, shall we? ๐ŸŽถ

Itโ€™s upbeat, fast-paced, and feels like the Power Rangers equivalent of an energy drink โ€” easily one of the catchiest themes of the Disney era.

๐Ÿ“œ Spoiler-Free Rundown

We open with a trio of slackers at the Wind Ninja Academy โ€” Shane (Red), Tori (Blue), and Dustin (Yellow) โ€” who are decent ninjasโ€ฆ when theyโ€™re paying attention. One day, their training is interrupted by an alien space ninja named Lothor (yes, a literal space ninja) who captures all the other students, leaving only our three to defend the Earth.

Theyโ€™re soon mentored by Sensei Kanoi Watanabe, who unfortunately gets turned into a guinea pig early on (yep, you read that right ๐Ÿน๐Ÿฅ‹), and his sarcastic son, Cam, who runs tech support for the team. Eventually, the trio gets some help from the Thunder Rangers, Hunter (Crimson) and Blake (Navy), who start as enemies but eventually join forces.

๐ŸŽญ Characters & Performances

Shane Clarke / Red Wind Ranger (Pua Magasiva) โ€“ The laid-back leader with a skateboarder vibe. Starts lazy but grows into the role of responsible leader.

Tori Hanson / Blue Wind Ranger (Sally Martin) โ€“ The calm, level-headed surfer girl who is basically the glue that holds the team together.

Dustin Brooks / Yellow Wind Ranger (Glenn McMillan) โ€“ The motocross-loving goofball with a heart of gold.

Hunter Bradley / Crimson Thunder Ranger (Adam Tuominen) โ€“ The intense older brother with a chip on his shoulder.

Blake Bradley / Navy Thunder Ranger (Jorgito Vargas Jr.) โ€“ The smoother, more easygoing of the Thunder duo.

Cam Watanabe / Green Samurai Ranger (Jason Chan) โ€“ The sarcastic, genius tech guy who eventually becomes a Ranger himself.

Sensei Kanoi Watanabe (Grant McFarland) โ€“ Mentor trapped in the body of a guinea pig, still dishing out wisdom (and occasional sass).

Lothor (Grant McFarland) โ€“ The space ninja villain with a flair for cheesy evil speeches and an army of goofy generals.

๐Ÿ˜ˆ Villains

Lothorโ€™s got a rotating cast of colorful (and sometimes idiotic) generals, like Zurgane (the more serious one), Choobo (comedic relief), and Kapri & Marah (his equally clueless nieces who bring sitcom energy to the battlefield).

โœ… Pros

Fun, fast-paced energy that never takes itself too seriously.

The Thunder Rangers arc is one of the best “enemy-to-ally” storylines in the franchise.

Camโ€™s eventual transformation into the Green Samurai Ranger is a satisfying payoff.

One of the funniest PR seasons โ€” it knows when to be silly.

โŒ Cons

The humor sometimes leans too goofy and undercuts tension.

Sensei as a guinea pigโ€ฆ yeah, thatโ€™s gonna be a hard sell for some viewers. ๐Ÿน

Lothor can be more โ€œannoying uncle at a BBQโ€ than intimidating threat.

๐Ÿ’ญ Final Thoughts

Ninja Storm is the start of the Disney era of Power Rangers, and honestly? Itโ€™s a solid kickoff. The showโ€™s lighthearted tone makes it easy to watch, and while it lacks the grit of earlier seasons, it makes up for it with charm, fun character dynamics, and a surprisingly heartfelt payoff with Camโ€™s arc.

Rating: 7.5/10 ๐ŸŽฏ

โš ๏ธ Spoilers Ahead โš ๏ธ

The seasonโ€™s big early twist comes when the Thunder Rangers are revealed to have joined Lothor because they blame Sensei Watanabe for their parentsโ€™ deaths. They operate as dangerous, skilled enemies for several episodes, creating real tension as they consistently outmatch the Wind Rangers. Eventually, the truth comes out that Sensei had nothing to do with their loss, and the brothers join forces with the main team.

Meanwhile, Cam is stuck in a support role for much of the season, running tech and strategy while the others fight. Midway through the series, he gets his own spotlight โ€” traveling back in time to retrieve a powerful artifact. This trip transforms him into the Green Samurai Ranger, a moment that feels earned after watching him prove his worth all season.

Sensei spends nearly the entire series trapped in the body of a guinea pig thanks to Lothorโ€™s magic. Itโ€™s played for humor but occasionally manages to land some surprisingly sincere mentor moments despite the absurdity. By the finale, the spell is broken and he returns to human form.

The final battle with Lothor sees him unleashing every trick he has left, but the Rangers manage to seal him away in the Abyss of Evil, along with his army of monsters. Itโ€™s a clean, decisive ending that ties up the story without too many loose threads โ€” though the seasonโ€™s comedic tone means even the climax has a touch of silliness.
