🌴 Death In Paradise

🎶let’s start by having y’all hear the theme song shall we?

Why aren’t I showing yall the trailers? It’s because there’s too many seasons and I’ve only watched like the first 5 seasons out of 14, then there’s the fact my favorite detective leaves the show in season 5, luckily I know why and when he does.

I then fell off the show for a bit and returned later on to see the new detective (turns out I missed 1 detective in between both), and how do I feel about the new detective? Oh boy, well we will get there but for now here’s the theme song for the show.

🏝️ Caribbean Vibes + My Flashback

Ahhhhh, fun fact: this show is filmed in the Caribbean. The Caribbean—such a gorgeous place. I actually been to the Caribbean about 2 years ago, coming up soon in November. It was a gorgeous trip, only downside was the constant sand flies and mosquitos biting us.

Here I’ll share the album I created of photos I took at the Caribbean, hope y’all enjoy:

Good old times. I do next want to go visit the town this show is filmed in. I do like tropical vibes.

🔍 The Setup: Murder. Every. Episode.

So what’s the premise of the show? Simple—it’s a murder detective series where each episode we have our group investigating a murder.

Yeah, it doesn’t get any simpler than that. But now I’ll mention the characters because there are multiple detectives that come in and out of this series. Also this show is made by BBC, same company who gave us banger shows like Doctor Who.

👮 Side Characters I Gotta Mention

  • Dwayne Myers – essentially the comic relief lazy cop
  • JP Hooper – Dwayne’s partner in crime, heck they both ride a 2-seated motorcycle together
  • Camille Bordey – essentially the love interest who’s also a detective (she’s the love interest for Richard and Humphrey, but for some reason she loved Richard. Don’t ask me how, idk what she saw in him)
  • Catherine – Camille’s mother, runs a hut/bar where the gang go to get a drink and advice
  • Comm. Selwyn Patterson – the slightly stern/grumpy commissioner, but also he’s not grumpy he’s just stoic

🕵️‍♂️ The Detectives: Ranked my Style

🧣 Richard Poole

Only lasted 2 seasons before they kill him off then replace him. Also he’s my least favorite detective. The guy’s one shtick is he’s grumpy and angry at almost everything. He hates the Caribbean because it’s too hot and the airport keeps forgetting his luggage.

🧼 Humphrey Goodman

The replacement detective for Richard Poole. BTW Humphrey is my favorite out of the detectives.
He’s quirky. He has multiple shticks such as never carrying a notebook with him to write down evidence, so he writes down evidence on any piece of anything he can grab ahold of—including tissue paper.
The guy is clumsy. Also, he might be autistic because he has to have his evidence paper in a specific order on his desk.

(Also out of all the detectives, Humphrey gets his own spin-off show, which we will also get to soon.)

(He leaves because his ex-girlfriend who left him comes back into his life and wants him to move out with her to England.)

🧓 Jack Mooney

He’s eh. There’s really nothing memorable about him except that he’s a nice calm man.

🧴 Neville Parker

Jeepers where do I start. Well—I hate this guy.
Couldn’t make it through the first season he appears in because his whole shtick is he’s a germaphobe about everything and anything. Heck, he gets on Comm. Selwyn Patterson’s nerves to the point he was gonna send him back home where he belongs.

👋 Other Characters That Show Up Later

  • Sergeant Florence Cassell – the love interest to Neville Parker, also a detective.
Unfortunately she leaves the show after this story arc where she’s sent undercover to penetrate a crime lord’s house and get intel on the woman in charge—because that woman sent men to kill someone who was gonna speak out.
So after that Florence has to go into hiding.

As for the other side characters we get…
idk I kinda dropped off the show when I couldn’t make it through Neville Parker.
I did watch pieces of those seasons—hence why I know what happened to Sergeant Florence Cassell.

Also later in the series they get rid of my favorite character Dwayne.

Why? Don’t ask me why.

🎄 Holiday Trash: DI Mervin Wilson

Recently in a Christmas special they got a new detective named DI Mervin Wilson.

Out of all the detectives he is by far the worst. Wanna know why?

Look—I know he only has appeared in 1 episode so far, but this is why he’s the worst:

The issue with him is he says he’s a loner, he works alone, he hates groups, he doesn’t like it there at the Caribbean, and how he ain’t gonna stay and just wants this case done so he can leave.

What a delightful douchebag he is. 🙄
I hope the director doesn’t have him stick around and be the new detective.

🏡 The Lizard and the Hut Life

BTW what do all these detectives I mentioned have in common?

All of them got transferred over from their home countries essentially against their will, and when they get to the Caribbean they are given this 1 small hut house on the beach (beautiful scenery).

Also the house comes with a pet lizard who gets named Harry—a name that was coined by Richard Poole and that name stuck ever since.

Also idk why almost all these detectives complain about being at the Caribbean—besides Humphrey and Jack Mooney. Like is the Caribbean that bad of a place to be at?

Answer is no.
It’s considered to be one of the most gorgeous places in the world.

🎤 Final Thoughts from a Humphrey Fanboy

So yeah that’s the show. Honestly my favorite detective was Humphrey. That’s really it, because I don’t care about the other replacement detectives nor the first season’s detective.

But besides hating or finding the other detectives meh, I genuinely like this show because of the comradery between the detectives and the other cops—plus the comradery between them and the commissioner.

🏁 Final Verdict

Anyways overall I’ll give this series a solid 8/10, I do recommend this series.
