🌴 Beyond Paradise: British Vibes, Caribbean Heart🏝️

🎬 Let’s Check Out the Trailers, Shall We?

🕵️‍♂️ What’s the Setup?

We follow Detective Humphrey Goodman, who’s now moved back to England with his ex-girlfriend Martha Lloyd to try living normal lives. (Emphasis on try.)

Except… he’s still a detective.

He joins a tiny squad of characters:

  • PC Kelby Hartford – comic relief
  • Esther Williams – a lone mother raising her daughter Zoe
  • Margo Martins – basically the stern-but-sweet grandma type

Meanwhile, Martha opens up a café with her mom, Anne Lloyd.

💔 The Plot Gets Personal

Small spoiler alert for Season 1:

There’s a side plot where Martha gets worried that Humphrey may not wanna marry her—because she can’t have kids. She tells him:

“We’re done. I can’t do this. You’ll just resent me. Even if you say no, some part of you will.”

Oof. 😬 So now Humphrey is beyond depressed. (Eh? Eh? Okay that was bad.)

Esther finds out he’s planning to leave. She’s mad he didn’t tell anyone and confronts him. He finally breaks down:

“I can’t stay in this town with the love of my life living here after dumping me.”

Fair enough.

✈️ Return to Paradise (Sorta)

So does he go back to the Caribbean?

Yep. He returns to his little hut and sits on the porch… cue entrance: Commissioner Selwyn Patterson.

And I love this exchange:

  • Selwyn: “You were missed.”
  • Humphrey: “Why thank you, Commissioner.”
  • Selwyn: “I didn’t say I missed you.”

LOLOLOL. Classic Selwyn and his brutal vagueness.

Turns out Martha called the commissioner. She shows up, they get back together, and decide to return home. But not before dropping in to visit his old crew!

🍹 Old Friends and Awkward Drinks

They meet Catherine at her bar and get to hang with Neville Parker.

Humphrey tricks Neville into buying them drinks:

“So Neville, what do you think of the commissioner?”
(Cue Commissioner walking in mid-sentence.)
“Oh, he respects you deeply!”

Selwyn: “If you respect me, you can buy me a drink.”
Neville: 😑

❌ But Where’s the Murder?

Also if you’re wondering, wait why’s there no murder-related stories? Idk, this show seemed to tame things down, compared to Death in Paradise where essentially every case was about murder.

In this show the cases are either about:

  • People going missing
  • Items being stolen
  • Possible murder plots or hidden evil agendas
  • Sometimes a fire will happen, possible arson?

Yeah anything but murder, but hey I guess that’s Death In Paradise’s shtick.

💍 Season 2 Shenanigans

Season 2 is all about wedding chaos.

Martha’s mom decides she’s throwing them a big wedding without asking. They want something simple.

Eventually, in the finale, she cancels it—so they can do it their way and when they’re ready. But no one told the guests. 😅

So… they party anyway! They dance, eat, and celebrate a wedding that’ll happen someday. Honestly? Kinda sweet.

🏠 Houseboat Hijinks

Fun fact: Humphrey and Martha move into a houseboat… docked right outside her mom’s house.

By Season 2, they decide they want to adopt a kid.

So what do they do?

They kick Martha’s mom out of her own house and move in. 😳

“Yeah, we’re gonna need a full house for the kid… so into the boat you go, Mom!”

Wow. Cold. Real cold.

And Humphrey?? You’re the son-in-law! You co-signed this??

🏁 Final Verdict

9/10.
Seriously, this show is funny, heartfelt, and full of charm. If you’re a Death in Paradise fan, this one’s a softer, cozy cousin.
Highly recommend.
