House Of The Dragons Season 2: let’s start by showing yall the trailers shall we?
They decided to give us Team Green trailer and Team Black trailer, zo uh enjoy?
Also here’s the week’s ahead trailer.
Also here’s seasons 2 opening theme.
Ok so this review is gonna be different from my first season’s review, this time I won’t be reviewing each episode separately. This time I’ll be giving a broad rundown of the show, then mention any revolutions or important information.
Also side note apparently one of the producers of season 1 stepped down of season 2 after season 1 ended because of a conflict with HBO, this will officially make so much sense when I start getting into this review.
So what’s the plot rundown? Well in this season we start with Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) wants revenge for her son’s death, so this leads to Daemon Targaryen
(Matt Smith) to hire rat killers to sneak into the castle and kill Aemond Targaryen
(Ewan Mitchell) the one with the eyepatch.
They can’t locate his room so they find King Aegon Targaryen (Ty Tennant) and sister Helaena Targaryen (Phia Saban).
In true Game Of Thrones fashion, they are both married. Yikes, anyways they locate her and her 2 kids. They make her choose a son to kill and she picks one, yeah child murder is the way this show starts. Hope y’all can stomach that.
Anyways Rhaenyra banishes Daemon and he goes away to recruit his army to go against Team Green, the evil side. While Rhaenyra sits back this entire season and just says what was I supposed to do? What do u want me to do? I can’t do anything.
Also, she eventually gets this chosen one mentality where she believes the gods have chosen her to be the ruler, uh oh with that mentality this can lead her down a dark path. Very similar to Daenerys Targaryen in Game Of Thrones Season 8. The less we remember about that season the better.
Wow real incentive, anyways team Green wants war, and things go out of hand. That foot-fedish guy named Larys Strong ( played by Matthew Needham) convinces King Aegon Targaryen to fire Otto Hightower (played by Rhys Ifans) who’s the hand of the king and Aegons mother Alicent Hightower (played by Olivia Cooke) father.
Did any of that make sense? So yeah her father is fired and a foot-fetish guy takes his place, will team green win or team black win? All will be revealed in spoilers.
But for now, let’s get the rating out of the way, overall I actually am not a huge fan of this season, I see it as a downgrade to the first season.
The main issue is team black is barely given enough to do, there’s barely anything that can qualify progression, and queen Rhaenyra is downgraded to just sitting and saying well what did u want me to do? While Daemon encounters a witch and is dealing with hallucinations.
One of his hallucinations was of the future where we see the White Walkers, oh wow I don’t care. Thanks show, thanks for reminding me of Game Of Thrones Season 8.
Also, Daemon is so wishy-washy, he goes from being like oh I can rule on my own, I’m a better leader then u ever will be. Then by the end of this season he comes back to Rhaenyra and says ur the queen and I’m gonna back u up no matter what.
In his defense, he’s not supporting her because he loves her or any of that, no he’s supporting her because he saw the events of Game Of Thrones Season 8, I too would be mortified and want to make sure that never comes to pass.
About the only aspect of Daemon’s subplot, I enjoyed was during the hallucinations he’s forced to witness and come to terms with the damage he’s done to people. This is hard for Daemon because he’d just usually walk away if something isn’t going in his favor.
Did any of that sound appealing to u? Also, this show is made by HBO yet they felt like taim8ng down the violence, we don’t see that kid die in episode 1 before u say how dare u. I want u to keep this in mind this is the same franchise that showed us someone’s head being bashed in through the eyes.
And attempted child murder by tossing a kid out of a tower, anyways Team Green has the most progression that does happen to them but we will get to that in the spoilers.
Also, the series lowered the budget, stupid of HBO, so they had the cut the final battle where Queen Rhaenyra was gonna have a giant fight with her dragon and then sit on the throne.
Also another major issue, this season was shorter. The first season had 10 episodes, this season only has 8 episodes. The fact these days it takes 2 to 3 years for a new season to release (even though back then it only took 1 year for a new season to release, so what’s happened?).
So for a show to take 2 to 3 years to release a new season, u better have a good enough lengthened show with great writing, this show feels like an incomplete mess, now we have to wait till next year for season 2, which again is a 2ish year gap.
But this has me worried because if people hated season 2 and want to leave, then what’s to stop HBO from lowering the budget again? If they keep lowering it we’re just gonna keep getting mid-script writing and underwhelming action scenes, keep in mind there are supposed to be a few wars going on, how is that gonna be portrayed with fewer and less of a budget?
Also the way this show portrays who’s evil and who isn’t, oh boy. So uh get this according to the show everything that’s going on that’s bad is all the men’s fault, not the 2 main woman’s fault, or any woman’s fault for that matter.
It’s like the show is saying oh everything that’s going south is because of the men, the women don’t want violence. They just want peace and love, no woman has ever considered wanting power or being ambitious.
Uhhhhhh sure, let’s go with that one! (Let’s forget that in this universe down the line we have Daenerys Targaryen and Cersei Lannister) nah ur right scriptwriters, Women have never once in any drama shows or this franchise to begin with.
Have ever considered wanting power and or being ambitious, nah their just good little girls who want peace because war is bad, yes we know wars are bad. But the way this is portrayed comes off as sexist and morally righteous.
Again that’s hypothetical coming from them when later down the line in this franchise we get Daenerys Targaryen and Cersei Lannister, who are 2 women who have ambitions and who want power.
Wait no that doesn’t make sense, according to this show it’s only men who want power while the woman is prancing around thinking about peace, Fuck right off.
Also, the final issue this show has (don’t worry I’ll talk more about it later in spoilers) is the way both Team Black and Team Green are portrayed, forget any nuance or having the show focus on a political game.
Now it’s, Team Green is bad, and Team Black is good. Well, I guess nuance and good writing is out the window with this season.
So overall I’ll give House Of The Dragons Season 2 a solid 4/10, warning spoilers ahead y’all been warned ⚠️.
____________________________________________________
So what were those progressions I alluded to? Besides the ones I’ve already mentioned.
Well for u see, besides the 2 things I already mentioned. Otto Hightower gets fired and a foot-fetish guy takes his place, also there’s a scene of Otto Hightower doing a mud pit fight against some random person.
Uh comedy? Yeah it’s like this show just decided to insert random comedy to lighten the tone of the show.
The next thing that happens is during a battle in the skies on the dragons, Aemond Targaryen on his ginormous dragon.
Decides to take this option to attack his brother Aegon instead of attacking Princess Rhaenys Targaryen (played by Eve Best) aka The Queen Who Never Was, who sided with Rhaenyra Targaryen.
But instead, Aemond Targaryen decides nah let me kill my brother, so he has his dragon burn him and his dragon, yikes but Rhaenyra does end up falling to her death as well, her dragon dies and there’s fire beneath them.
So now with Aegon badly burnt, can’t even walk. Is in bed, one eye burnt shut, the entire side of his face burnt, who’s now gonna be King?
Oh right, Aemond, so now he’s the king and he ain’t gonna take any BS. Nor is he gonna allow foot-fetish guy to manipulate him, so the foot-fetish guy is rooting for Aegon who’s in bed agonizing away.
I will admit it, out of this season Aegon was the most compelling, put aside the way he was in season 1. I want u to consider this for season 2, he was thrown and manipulated into becoming king.
He was never taught how to be King or rule properly, when he does try to be a generous king, his son dies and now he wants war, Otto tried manipulating him and using his dead son as propaganda.
His own mother doesn’t even comfort him when he’s sad, so essentially his mother and her father insult him for falling apart and not being a king correctly, keep in mind they thrawdled him into the position of king.
Now they are chastising him for it. Wow, just wow. It does get worse, he does become a triple thanks to the murder attemp by his brother and still his own mom doesn’t even come to comfort him.
Heck she essentially signs his death warrant personally when she essentially tells Rhaenyra hey u can kill my 2 sons if u want, mother of the year aren’t I right?
At the end of this season, he does get taken away into hiding by Foot-fetish guy and u can see the anger in Aegons eyes, yeah I would be as well. Do u now see what I mean by he’s the most interesting thing in this season?
Let’s see what else happens to team Green, Alicent Hightower finally realizes that her husband Viserys I Targaryen (played by Paddy Considine) wasn’t talking about Aegon their son on his deathbed. When he said Aegon was the rightful king.
He was talking about Aegon The Conquer, whoops. Nah that’s too late to have regret now, also only reason she has regret is because she’s being ignored by everyone in the council. A council of her own sons neglecting her.
They kinda banish her from the council, yeah I would then have regrets as well.
Small tangent but I have a bone to pick with this whole Alicent and Rhaenyra no longer being friends thing, mainly the way it’s written. For u see season 1 would imply that it’s because of the damage patriarchy is the reasons both of them split up and became enemies.
Essentially the men in their lives are holding them back, ok that’s a fine message. That is an understandable one, where I officially have an issue though is near the end of season 1 in episode 8 both of them decide to become friends again at the final dinner with King Viserys.
That’s sweet, I bet this friendship will last long and be prosperous, nah it ends pretty quick because that night on Viserys death bed she mistaken which Aegon he’s talking about.
Now remember how I said in season 2 she’s come to regret putting Aegon in charge? That this was a huge mistake that he’s not ready? Well, all this confusion could been cleaned up if she had a conversation with Rhaenyra before she put her son in charge as king!
Wow what a crazy thought, see there’s my issue right there. There’s a contrived reason for both characters splitting apart again, no it ain’t the freaking patriarchy this time.
No can’t have them have a fallout because of patriarchy, no now it has to be because of a misunderstanding, which btw keep in mind could have been cleared up if she talked to Rhaenyra shortly after, but nah now she truly thinks this was a bad decision.
Gee wiz u don’t say, and here I was thinking this was all going splendid, jeepers. Essentially my issue is this, the show was like nah we can’t have these 2 best friends have a feud and split apart and become enemies because of patriarchy.
Because that means we’d have to admit that patriarchy won, so instead we’re gonna have them become friends again (down with the patriarchy) just for then an unfortunate event to happen shortly after, with a heavy dose of a misunderstanding.
Which btw keep in mind could easily be cleared up by Rhaenyra, not like these 2 are not on talking terms anymore, they’ve just become besties again. But nah let’s just have Alicent sit on that thought of Aegon her son becoming king because both girls are Self-righteous.
Jeepers get off ur high horse for a minute writers and try to make me make sense of all this. How do u explain this writing?
Also apparently in the books, no one is a good guy, both sides are pieces of shite. Which is what u need to play the Game Of Thrones, but the show is trying to make these 2 girls sympathetic.
Heck, Rhaenyra sneaks into Alicent’s room and instead of Alicent having her guards attack Rhaenyra, she’s instead like hey look u can have my sons u can kill them if u want.
Well, that was easy, what’s next is Rhaenyra just gonna be handed over the Iron Throne on a silver platter?
Also, Rhaenyra has magical teleportation, as in the scriptwriters got lazy, she doesn’t have a dragon on her and she somehow gets to Alicent in a few minutes, because that’s how that works.
Side note I truly think this whole team black and team green thing is some bullshite.
Because unfortunately, we all know how this story is gonna end before y’all say wait how? No, we don’t, remember back to season 3 of Game Of Thrones? Well, there’s a throw-a-way line that Geoffrey says where he essentially describes how Rhaenyra dies, so uh great so Team Green wins.
Lovely, again makes this whole team thing vote for our team, to be pointless.
Also, there’s no nuance to the writing, it seems the scriptwriters have a bias because of the way this show is written, it’s written as team black good and team green evil.
That’s it, there’s no nuance to both sides. Apparently in the book, both sides are despicable, but here? Nah why have nuance when we can just dumb down the plot and character writing. We can’t have anyone having to think or disagree or agree with morality.
No one side good one side bad, this is the equivalent of Star Wars, there’s no nuance there. There’s never been nuance, even though the old Star Wars is great, I still can admit there’s zero nuance, just like here it’s this team good and that team bad.
So how does this show end? Well glad y’all asked, it ends with Rhaenyra suiting up to get on her dragon to go to war, then she walks outside on the cliff to look at the sunrise and that’s it, that’s how the show ends, we cut to black.
Huh? That’s the way ur gonna end ur show? News flash this doesn’t qualify as a cliffhanger, because a cliffhanger happens when something happens and they cut off right before a resolution is gonna be found.
This isn’t that, this is trying to hook people for a season 3, on what exactly? It isn’t latching us on to something epic to be excited about, no it’s latching us on the idea and thought of hey look a war is coming, aren’t y’all excited?
Noooo! Show us something is about to happen, show us some form of a consequence start. Don’t end ur show on a half-fast ending then say Tada waTada that great? Didn’t u just like seeing Rhaenyra standing on a cliff and looking at the sun?
Now come back in 2ish years for possibly a season 3, yeah if this is the script writer’s idea of a cliffhanger then I think I’ll take a pass for any future installments.
Once again this isn’t s cliffhanger, just because u end ur show with our main character standing literally on a cliff. Doesn’t give u Carte blanche to call this a cliffhanger.
This whole season felt like one giant build-up, that’s it. Nothing else except for build-up. Season 1 ended with hey we’re going to war, Season 2 ended with hey we’re going to war.
What’s season 3 gonna he about? Is it gonna be about hey we’re going to war!?
Anyway I’m done, I’m heading out of here, hope y’all enjoyed the review, until next time.
