The Menu

The Menu: Let’s start by showing y’all the trailers shall we?

Yeah I know it took me a while to get around to this review but now I’m finally reviewing it.

Also, no idk why this film is labeled as a horror movie, this film is more of a dark satire than anything, it’s a commentary on the food industry.

I’ve been meaning to get around to it, so what’s the plot rundown? Well, this group of people mainly consisting of rich people or stars are heading onto an island where there’s a restaurant called Hawthorn of a famous chef played by Ralph Fiennes.

Who’s got a meal plan for them, who do these random people consist of?

Nicolas Hoult

Anna Taylor Joy

John Leguizamo

Nicolas Hoult invites Anna Taylor Joy to this island, so what does the chef have in plan for tonight? Well, he’s lured all these people to this island because these people insulted him and his food for too long now he wants revenge. Oh, and some people have lied and keep asking for substitutions for them, even though there is none.

Heck there’s an underline message of customers being needy, I mean some of them in this film complain/ask for more bread sticks.

Side thing there’s a reference to covid in this  film, he shows everyone he’s me are about to drown his own boss in the lake to die while dressed as ah angle.

One of the people at the table says he kept u open during COVID-19 u monster, and he said yes but he asked me for substitutions when there isn’t any! Like i said he’s fed upm

So tonight’s meal he’s planned the food around ways to bring out these people’s secrets to each other into the open, wait did Nicolas Hoult’s character know this all along?

Will he figure out why she’s here? Better yet will we ever figure it out? All will be revealed in the spoilers.

I mean for example he has his chefs bring out tortillas that have images on them that were ingrained with a laser machine, these images are dirty secrets each person at each table is hiding from one another.

Yeah yikes, that’s definitely a way for ur skeletons to come out of the closet.

Will Anna Taylor Joy make it out alive? Why’s the chef so nuts? Also yes chef is nuts, he runs his employees like a cult leader.

They all look up to him and answer Yes sir (at the same time), also the chef is weary of Anna Taylor Joy’s character because he doesn’t know her and doesn’t know why she’s here.

Also chef values his cooks if they are only the best of the best, I mean he tells everyone straight in front of everyone that one of his cooks isn’t the best and he has him off himself with a gun right in front of everyone.

Yeah, ur gonna get a few of that in this film. Essentially the chef’s plot boils down to “Oh hey so y’all have complained about my cooking in the past, or act like spoiled brats or make up shite to get clout. So here’s tonight’s meal with a side of F**k u and our best dessert titled ur gonna die tonight”.

One other thing I find creative in this film is every meal that comes out on the tables, the camera shows an up close frame of the meal and a description next to it of what the meal is or what it represents, ok that’s creative.

If ur wondering why don’t just escape this madness? Well 2 of them try to leave and say they are gonna call a helicopter, what does this guy get in return? Some of his fingers cut off on his left hand, of course, yikes we’ll there’s no escape for anyone.

But I do like that some people at the tables (well mainly one table) say well this is clearly all a show for our benefit and I love the meal, oh haha. As I said commentary on the high art rich food.

I never understood people spending thousands of dollars for a plate of food that amounts to one Measley small piece of food u can pick up with ur fingers, oh wow that was worth the thousands of dollars.

Still am hungry though, yeah like I said, I’ve never understood the artsy part of rich food. So I like that this film is a commentary on that

But now let’s get the rating out of the way.

Overall I absolutely love this film, 10/10. I highly recommend it, especially if u like food. Anyways warning spoilers ahead y’all been ⚠️.
____________________________________________________

Time to spoil the 3rd act and any revelations, so did Nicolas Hoult’s character know about the chef’s plan? Yes, he’s a sicko fan of the chef. He invited Anna Taylor Joy not just as a friend but to be the final person to add to the sacrifice.

What a prick, even the chef calls him out on his bullshite. The chef asks Hoult to show him his cooking skills, as soon as he cooks him something.

He scolds him for the food being bad and essentially punishes him. Hey I mean he deserved to be punished.

So Nicolas Hoult’s character goes and hangs himself in the closet, jeepers this is a cult.

But I don’t feel bad for him because he was being a “C” word to his friend this entire time, scolding her for not wanting to eat certain dishes they brought out for them.

I mean half the meals he’s brought out, I’d not eat them either. Now granted I am picky when it comes to food.

So come the third act whole Anna Taylor Joy tries to explore the kitchen, she stumbles into an old Pic of the chef where he’s smiling while making a burger.

In the other pics he looks depressed as all hell, she realizes that truly the last time this chef has ever been happy was when he cooked a burger. So she comes up with a plan, which involves her to return to the tables while the chef and his cult are making Dessert.

Which are these giant snores they are gonna put all over the customers and then set them on fire, uh yikes.

So Anna Taylor Joy stands up and gets the attention of the chef and his cult by clapping like the chef does, she tells him she wasn’t happy with the meal and wants to send it back, and he says sorry to hear that. What wasn’t ur like? Which she said well u took the fun out of eating food.

Tonight’s meal has been a construct of your cooking, and u don’t put any love in ur food. Which the chef says well that’s preposterous we always cook our food with love, don’t we? (His cult team says at the same time) yes sir!

She says she’s still hungry and would love a cheeseburger, a classic one not a warped-up version.

The chef looks a bit shocked and says I’ll make u the best cheeseburger, it will taste like the one ur mom gave u the first time, the cheap ones u could afford.

How much will that cost me? $9.99, does that come with fries? Ok, I ain’t gonna lie I’m now having a craving for burgers and fries, so the chef hooks a burger while smiling.

She finally gave him that opportunity to smile and enjoy what he was cooking once again, he brought over the burger and fries. She takes a bite and praises him for the burger, he smiles and says that is one heck of a burger.

She says she is full and could use this to go, so he packs it up for her and gives her the to-go box and a gift bag. She takes out $10 and says thanks for the meal.

They let her out of the building, awww that really is a sweet ending. She gave back that one thing this chef had been missing for a long time in his line of work, joy. Anyways he and his men then bring out the desert and douse everyone in melted chocolate after wrapping them with marshmallow wraps.

I do like his final words to the group while his cult covers the guests in smores “So, once again, thank u for dining with us tonight. You represent the ruin of my art and my life” Ouch, also double ouch.

Then sets everyone on fire including the building, well this just turned into a suicide cult (yes I know trigger warning).

Anyway the film ends with her on a boat while watching the fire spread as she’s enjoying her burger and wiping her mouth with a Panflit that was in the bag, the end. Like I said there’s a commentary somewhere in that ending.

Anyway hope y’all enjoyed this review, now if u excuse me I’m gonna go get myself a burger and some fries.
