El Tigre (Retrospective)

El Tigre: so this review is gonna be slightly different because this is a show that came out decades back on Nickelodeon titled El Tigre.

At first, I vaguely remembered watching this show, all I remembered was the theme song, so I decided to rewatch it when it came on Paramount Plus. I absolutely adored rewatching it.

Brought back tons of memories, so today be sharing with y’all more of my childhood shows. Today’s gonna be different, instead of showing y’all trailers I’m instead gonna show y’all the theme song, it’s beyond catchy.

Told you, good luck getting that one out of your heads now. So essentially the premise of this show is we follow our main character who’s a kid named Manny Rivera, and his punk rock tomboy girlfriend named Frida.

These 2 are troublemakers at school, The reason Manny is a troublemaker is because he’s uncertain about if he wants to become a hero like his father Rodolfo Rivera (aka White Pantera)

His abilities come from the golden shoes he has, which grant him speed and strength.

Or a villain like his grandpa Granpapi Rivera (aka Puma Loco) (he’s a retired criminal who now has a moral of family comes first)

His powers come from the Sombrero he wears, which is this metal sombrero that can turn into a mech, yes u heard that correctly.

Also, there’s Maria Rivera (Rodolfo ex-wife) (she used to be a superhero herself but couldn’t take the stress anymore, also her powers came from this metal glove that has the power)

(When u plop on this glove, it turns u into a badass superfighter who knows no fear and only sees enemies as obstacles that it can easily cut through, yeah yikes)

She comes back into Manny’s life (not romantically with her ex-husband) but as a school librarian so she can keep an eye on Manny and hopefully steer him in the right direction. Also, she’s hesitant to let her son go out and fight crime because every time she sees her son fight crime.

She starts having a panic attack which include breathing heavily in and out, then possibly fainting, yikes.

When Manny isn’t a kid and at school, he’s the superhero? No wait anti-hero named El Tigre. He flips over this T on his belt which turns him into a hero.

Now imagine accidentally getting ur belt stuck on something like a school desk and it accidentally sets it off in front of everyone.

Also, Manny and his family have many enemies, such as the principal whos name is principle Tonino at Manny school because he and Frida pull elaborate pranks which always affects the principal.

When Manny and his family when they are out there fighting crime, they have enemies such as

Santana Of The Dead (her while gimic is she’s a skeleton and she likes raising the dead)

Django Of The Dead (he’s the grandson of Santana Of The Dead)

Dr. Chipotle Padre

Dr. Chipotle Jr. (He’s the son of Chipotle Padre, he just hates the Riveras because they locked his father away)

El Oso

Black Cuervo (she’s in love with El Tigre, think Catwoman to Batman)

Voltura (these 3 hate the Riveras because they got screwed over romantically by each Rivera in the past)

Lady Gobbler (she’s the head honcho of this trio)

Yeah if u can’t tell this show probably wouldn’t be able to be made today, these names can very much come off as stereotypes, actually come to think of it in a way yes the show does have stereotypes.

It’s, unfortunately, unfortunately a product of its time, I’m sure if u go back to classic mid-shows in the early 2000s, none of them would probably hold up as they did back then.

Also final notes, Manny gets into tons of trouble by doing things that affect both his father and grandpa, again he’s on the brink of either turning evil or good.

Oh, also they live in a made-up town called Miracle City, speaking of the City. Let’s talk about the main themes description of the city.

“Miracle City, a spicy cesspool of crime villainy”

Hmmmmmm wonder where we heard this one before, wait a minute this is just Gotham City, think of it, a superhero that comes from a wealthy family.

It has a superhero gimic of something relating to an animal, the town is a cesspool of crime and villainy, plus there’s a cat-woman-type thief who robes places and is in love with Batman I mean El Tigre.

Yeah, u think I wouldn’t have noticed Nickelodeon. U thought u were clever, well I’m on to u.

Anyways moving on, so the spoilers will be completely short like so short there’s really no purpose, but I just want to bring up how this show as a whole ended before it was canceled.

So now let’s get the rating out of the way so we can spoil how this entire show ended. Overall yeah I still enjoy this show like a lot, so I’ll give this show a solid 9/10. Warning spoilers ahead y’all been warned ⚠️.

So how does this show end? Well glad y’all asked, this show ends with both Manny and Frida kissing each other, I guess there was some love connection between them.

Although no not really, they have always been friends. Ok I got to ask y’all something are y’all getting a bit tired of seeing the trope of a boy and a girl who are just friends?

Who ends up hooking up together at some point? Or get shipped together? Why can’t just a boy and girl just be platonic friends?

Does at some point the 2 main characters always have to become lovers? Is this the typical trope? How about changing it up every now and then?

BTW keep in mind this is not where they wanted the show to end, they were hoping for a season 2. I mean the way the series ended just felt like an average episode (minus both characters kissing each other for the first time) and that’s how this series ended.

Not on something major or grand, just on a whimper. This is a shame I guess, mainly it’s a shame that they didn’t get to finish their full vision. But also a shame that shows these days won’t do something like this again and take risks.

Oh well, the end. Hope y’all enjoyed this review, till next time
