Coco: Let’s start by showing y’all the trailers shall we?
Yeah idk what took me so long to get to this review but I’m finally reviewing this masterpiece of a film.
Also, I remember something that still to this day gave me another reason to despise Disney, so get this sometime after or before this film came out they tried to copyright Day Of The Dead.
Disney, how do u even copyright a holiday u didn’t even invent? Try telling me Disney isn’t greedy without telling me Disney is greedy.
So what’s the plot? Well, this child named Miguel barely wants to become a musician because he worships his ancestor named Ernesto de la Cruz, who was a famous musician before he died.
Unfortunately being a musician is banned in his family because a musician walked out on Miguel’s grandma named MamĆ” Coco.
So now the family resents musicians, mainly Miguel’s mother. One night during the day of the dead (btw that’s one of my favorite holidays) (I’ve done tons of research on it because it fascinates me).
(People need to stop mistaking the day of the Dead and Halloween as the same holiday, it ain’t. Not even in the slightest) Anyways back to what I was saying.
That night Miguel goes to the cemetery (mainly the Mazolium of Ernesto de la Cruz, he picks up the guitar and uses it, which somehow sends Miguel into the spirit realm along with his ugly dog.
I ain’t being rude, the dog does look ugly. But that’s what makes that dog well that dog, also speaking of the afterlife.
The way it’s portrayed in this film is gorgeous, I have a hard time even coming up with words to describe it so I’ll put a still frame shot right here.

As u can see this is gorgeous, anyway so Miguel now wants to find Ernesto de la Cruz to get his blessing so he can become a musician.
Along the way, he bumps into this hillbilly-looking skeleton (right forgot everyone in the land of the dead is skeletons instead of ghosts) named HƩctor.
He agrees to help Miguel get to Ernesto de la Cruz, not because out of kindness. No, he wants to get access to go to the land of the living to visit his loved ones that night.
Because on the day of the dead, the dead get to cross a bridge to the overworld to visit their loved ones as they pay respect to their dead loved ones.
That’s extremely wholesome, the issue is he doesn’t have a ticket (think of this like a train station) he doesn’t have his ticket.
Maybe he can snag the one from Miguel, he was given one. Don’t ask me why.
But also maybe it’s in Miguel’s best interest to go find Ernesto de la Cruz fast because if he stays there too long he will become a skeleton and die.
So will Miguel get to Ernesto de la Cruz in time? Will he make it back to the normal world? Who the heck is HƩctor?
All will be revealed in the spoilers, let’s get the rating out of the way. Overall yeah I absolutely adore this film, Pixar and Disney u outdid yourselves.
I just love how gorgeous this film is. I also love the approach of this film making a Day Of The Dead type of film, again what a great holiday to research on.
Fun fact I found out the actor who voiced Ernesto De La Cruz is Benjamin Bratt, such an underrated actor if u ask me. He also brings such a great performance for this role.
So overall I’ll give Pixars Coco a solid 10/10, warning spoilers ahead y’all been warned ā ļø.

Time to spoil the 3rd act and any revelations.
The first revelation, turns out skeletons can permanently vanish away and die if they are forgotten, that’s why HĆ©ctor wants to badly go visit his family because he runs the risk of dying.
When Miguel does get to Ernesto in his mansion, he tells him that he’s his grandson. But before he gets his blessing, HĆ©ctor shows up and fights with Ernesto. Turns out Ernesto stole HĆ©ctor’s songs from him.
Dunn dun Dunn, here’s another plot twist we find out as soon as Ernesto dumps the both of them into a cave, turns out Ernesto isn’t Miguel’s relative. No, it turns out HĆ©ctor was his relative.
Dunnn dun dunnn! Yeah, he badly needs to go see MamĆ” Coco who’s his daughter! before her memories go away forever since she’s beyond old and has late stage of dementia, this is a kids film btw, just want to remind y’all.
So turns out HĆ©ctor and Ernesto were a duo, he’d make the songs for Ernesto and they would go on the road together as Ernesto would perform. One day HĆ©ctor decides to leave to go back home to see his daughter.
Ernesto hot mad at this and gives him a drink so they both can have a toast, turns out he poisoned HĆ©ctor so he can’t leave, he murdered his friend out of spite then stole his music and said it was his own. Wow, what a douchbag.
So the 2 of them go get the help of their other relatives who are also dead, HƩctor first has to somewhat make amends because the other families who are down there thought HƩctor got up and left his own daughter.
So that’s why they banned music in the family, because they thought HĆ©ctor left his own daughter, yeah ok understandable. Turns out nope he was just murdered by his douchbag of a friend.
So now they team up to go expose Ernesto for the murderer he truly is, while he’s life on stage performing for a giant crowd in a stadium that’s overlooking a cliff.
They also need to get the Pic of HƩctor from Ernesto so Miguel can bring the Pic home to Coco so she can see her father one last time.
HĆ©ctor’s wife agrees to help them out on the same condition she told Miguel earlier. U r to go home and there will be no more music that’s my blessing.
Miguel has now realized family comes first (again, I F***king love this movie) so he agrees, even though HĆ©ctor’s wife can’t forgive him, she will still help, out.
Also, Miguel’s spirit animal which is a giant tiger with wings comes to help.
They come up with a plan to sneak behind the stage and corner Ernesto to get the Pic from him.
This leads to HƩctors wife bumping into Ernesto and slapping him because her murdered HƩctor, Miguel and HƩctor come out behind the corner and Ernesto realizes that Miguel is related to HƩctor.
They chase him, and Miguel gets handed the photo from HĆ©ctor’s wife. She ends up getting pushed onto a floor which elevates up to the stage where she has to distract everyone.
As HƩctor is about to come and perform on stage, guess who shows up? Ernesto, he grabs the Pic from HƩctors wife but they grab it back, as they are about to send Miguel home.
Ernesto grabs Miguel and is about to toss Jim off the cliff, as HĆ©ctor is dying he tries to beg for Miguel’s life. Just then the family members turn on the TV recording so they witness what he’s saying.
He essentially says u think I’m gonna allow him to go back to the land of the living and let his memories go on forever? He’s s threat. Miguel tells him ur a murderer, and the whole crowd overhears this, good.
He tries to go back on stage to perform but no one is having it, luckily Miguel’s spirit animal saves him.
The spirit animal deals with Ernesto by tossing him over the stadium and into the monument with the bell where he died in the land of the living, wow talk about comeuppance.
So Miguel gets sent home as HƩctor is dying. Unfortunately, Coco is forgetting him because her memories are fading away.
Miguel makes it to her along with HĆ©ctor’s guitar and starts playing music to get her to remember, she then starts singing a long while Miguel’s family is standing right behind him.
She starts remembering HƩctor, and she then gives Miguel the rest of HƩctors Pic that was missing from the hand cut Pic that Miguel had.
I think I’m gonna cry, especially the way the film ends. With Coco dead and now in the afterlife, Ernesto’s legacy is forgotten permanently. HĆ©ctors Pic being displayed back intact in the shrine.
Now along with MamĆ” Coco, who now lives happily with HĆ©ctor and her mother, the film ends with Miguel playing music with Miguel’s guitar at the next day of the dead celebration where HĆ©ctor and the others are there to celebrate with them.
The end, Anyways sorry that one was longer but I hope y’all enjoyed this review, till next time.
