The Gentleman: Let’s start by showing y’all the trailer shall we?
Yes I know I’m late to this one, like 6 years late. However I’m now getting to it finally, This has been a film I’ve been wanting to review because I loved it.
If y’all didn’t know this film is made by Guy Ritchie, the name sounds familiar? It should because he made The 2 Sherlock Holmes films.
Yes the Robert Downy Jr. Sherlock Holmes films, anyways in this film u got a tight cast of characters. U have,
Charlie Hunnam (as Raymond Smith)
Matthew McConaughey (as Michael Pearson)
Collin Ferrell (as Coach)
Michelle Dockery (as Rosalind Pearson)
Eddie Marsan (as Big Dave)
Jeremy Strong (as Matthew Berger)
Hugh Grant (as Fletcher)
Henry Golding (as Dry Eye)
Like I said a tight cast, so what’s the plot rundown y’all are wondering?
Well in this film Fletcher played by Hugh Grant who’s a private detective, breaks into Raymond Smiths home to tell him a story that he basically demands he tells Raymond.
Who’s Raymond? Easy he’s the right-hand man/bodyguard to a wealthy drug dealer named Michael Pearson. That’s right drug dealer.
Think of him as the mafia of weed, he Essentially is. I mean he has his best man Raymond go out and do jobs for him.
Fletcher also tells Raymond that he’s writing a script for a film, and he tries to make an offer to Raymond or he will go talk to the news and give them info.
So now it’s time for him to talk about the whole script he’s got in the form of a game, keep in mind this script is info Raymond has been through.
So what’s the story that Fletcher wants to tell Raymond? Well he wants to tell him every piece of info he found out, he also has taken Pics of them. He’s been saying on them so he can take these in to report it to the news.
So he’s blackmailing Raymond to listen to him or he might just have to send those pics in, Raymond bites his time.
So what does this story boil down to that Raymond technically already knows? Well while this guy named Matthew Berger tries to buy out Michael Pearson’s business in exchange for a profit so he can retire with his wife Rosalind Pearson. Who’s also working in charge of the company with Michael Pearson as well.
A new upcoming wannabe crime lord named Dry Eye also wants Michael Pearson’s business as well because he is a successful drug dealer, he runs a respected weed business.
All while this happens some teens break into Michael Pearson’s secret weed lab and take pics of them in it.
So now he has to know how these teens found their place so he sends Raymond to go deal with this, which leads to this guy named Coach coming clean to Raymond at his bar.
His teens were the ones who broke in and he takes full responsibility for their actions, he wants to owe Raymond until the debt is settled so Raymond doesn’t kill the teens, how sweet. Raymond wants to know how those teens knew.
Turns out this guy that Coach found and brought in the back of his car with him told these teens where the lab would be, and I love this scene of dialog between them.
Coach: his name is Phuc, but it’s spelled with a “PH,” but it sounds like “Fu-uk”.
Raymond: so it’s Phu-uc?
Coach: what? Yeah, something like that, anyways he’s the kid that gave us the skunk farm job. Do u know him?
Raymond: yeah we’ve met before, haven’t we, Phu-uc….Phuc?
Coach: that’s the one, Phu-uc?
Raymond: Phu-uc
Coach: Phu-uc
Coaching: All alright kid don’t do anything stupid (tears off tape off of mouth)
Phu-uc: gasps
Raymond: how did u know the location?
Phu-uc: I need my inhaler (gasps)
Raymond: yeah in a minute. I need u to tell me how u knew the location of our farm.
Phu-uc: I’ve been trailing u for months. Dry Eye was given the address. (Panting) I can’t breathe! I need it, please.
Coach: all right, Phuc. Calm the Fu-uk down.
Lololo, one other thing, Raymond is hired by Michael Pearson to find these 2 rich people’s daughter who’s gone missing, turns out she’s not missing. She’s doing drugs with her friends at an apartment in an area that Raymond doesn’t want to go to.
But he does, he goes inside and lectures them about doing heroin. Also, he endures his dominance over these druggers.
How it’s bad for u, while weed is better, all the while he pulls out his own weed and rolls it up, he then takes the girl outside to the car while his henchman waits there to prevent them from leaving.
While he takes her to the car these kids pull up and record what’s happening, just then one of the drug men comes flying out the window and splats onto the floor, dun dun! Now Raymond has to chase down these kids who recorded all this because they are running from him. Cue music

Rosalind: so u killed a guy?
Raymond: no it was the gravity that killed him.
So why’s Dry Eye after Michael Pearson’s business? Along with Matthew Berger? Does Raymond have a counterplan against Fletcher’s blackmailing? Because I want y’all to keep in mind while he’s telling this whole story to Raymond.
He’s being like the most annoying guest who invited himself in, by asking Raymond to cook him some rare meat he has for him during the middle of the night.
Why? I don’t ask me, he’s just like that. Will Fletcher sell those pics to the new person in charge named Big Dave? How long will this partnership between Raymond and Coach last? Will Michael and his wife get to retire?
All will be revealed in the spoilers, but first, let’s get the rating out of the way. Overall I enjoyed this film, yes it is a tad bit of a slower-paced film.
But I don’t mind that, I usually care more if the story can invest me. Spoilers this story was able to keep me invested, I know the whole cast is great but my 3 favorites who stick out the most in my opinion are
Hugh Grant
Charlie Hunnam
Collin Ferrell
I do recommend watching this film if u haven’t, at the moment it’s on Netflix. Idk how long it will be on there btw, I should give a warning there’s a scene of uh how do I say this Projectal vomiting? So if u are queezy to stuff like that then that one scene might turn u off.
But I insist y’all watch this film once, u won’t regret it, also Guy Ritchie made The Gentleman TV series on Netflix, idk if that’s any good. I’m yet to watch it, nor do I know how connected it is to the film.
Let me know if I should watch that show and review it.
Side note I love how this film is approached, everything in this film is told out of order kinda, and we’re never given the full context of specific characters or story beats at first, it’s like a puzzle we have to figure it out.
The story gets pieced together as the film goes along.
So overall I’ll give Guy Ritchie’s The Gentleman a solid 10/10, warning spoilers ahead y’all been warned ⚠️.

Time to spoil the 3rd act and any revelations, so Michael goes and pays Dry Eyes’ boss a visit and demands he to tell Dry Eye to stop this.
I say demand but what I mean is he drugged his tea with a drug that makes him Projectal vomit everywhere, so uh after that he tells Dry Eye to stop this.
But instead, Dry Eye kills his boss, and he wants to become a mob boss, also another plot twist. He recruits Matthew Berger to get full leadership of Michael Pearson’s business so he can take over.
Uh oh, oh and Matthew Berger tells Phuc where the location of the weed factory is, which then Phuc told those teens to go raid the place.
Why? Well, it would make it seem suspicious that some group of teens found the place and was able to steal from Michael Pearson, so Matthew would come in and ask for a lower price to own the company.
That’s a scummy move, anyways Fletcher gives Raymond till tomorrow to consider his offer, or else he goes and takes all this info to Big Dave, so now Raymond has a backup plan to send Coach and his teens to kidnap Big Dave.
They blackmail him by having him wake up in a van they kidnapped him in and essentially show him a video of Dave Fucking a pig.
Ok then, uhhhhhhh.
They drugged him and they threaten to send that out if he takes any information from Fletcher. So he backs down on asking Fletcher for the information.
Now it’s time for Raymond and Coach to deal with Fletcher at Raymond’s home, and time for Michael Pearson to deal with Matthew Berger at another site of his which is a truck which is holding pounds of meat in cases.
So how does this all get dealt with? Well, Michael forces Matthew into the truck to deposit his money to him and cut off a pound of flesh, because gets this Dry Eye kinda R worded his wife, so then Michael comes and kills Dry Eye to save his wife.
But here’s the thing he’s not mad at all that Matthew tried Fucking him over, no he’s mad that his wife got assaulted, hey u know what? Fair, and I think that’s why I like these criminals I’m this film, they feel human.
Heck also for a mafia kinda boss, Michael is the most chill person, plus he has morals. Anyways how does Raymond deal with Fletcher? Well, he tells Fletcher that he and Coach were able to locate his backup insurance in case he disappeared or died.
They were always 5 steps ahead of Fletcher, he may have thought he was out starting Raymond but this whole time he was 5 to 10 steps ahead of Fletcher. So they both force him into a box.
Coach leaves with his debt fullfilled, all although when Coach leaves he gets a call from his men that they are about to go do a thing.
What is this thing? Well turns out and Raymond finds out due to Fletcher telling him something, remember that kid u pushed out the window? Well, his father is an Ex KGB agent and he’s mad about his son’s death.
I tipped him off about Michael Pearson, he sent his men to kill him and u, dunn dunn dunn! So Fletcher runs off while Raymond texts Michael. Too late he got into his car.
Luckily Coaches men come up in front of them in a van and shoot the drivers, saving Michael, phew.
2 KGB agents come to Raymond’s home but Coach deals with them and kills them, that makes it 4 times he’s helped Raymond.
The film ends with Fletcher essentially breaking the 4th wall by talking to a news outlet telling them about his script and how it ends on a cliffhanger, and Fletcher tells the guy what u need is a sequel.
Oh ha ha, he then leaves and gets into a taxi, that so happens to be driven by Raymond. He found Fletcher and has now locked him in the car.
“I want u to play a game with me Fletcher” oh snap, the final shot is of Michael at home waiting for his wife, his wife comes home and closes the door.
Oh la la, anyway the end.
