Heretic

Heretic: Let’s start by showing y’all the trailers shall we?

Sorry, it took me this long to get to this review. The main reason I wanted to go see this film was because of Hugh Grant, he’s a phenomenal actor.

So what is the plot y’all are wondering?

Well these 2 Christian girls named

Sister Barnes (played by Sophie Thatcher) (her character is becoming uncertain of religion)

Sister Paxton (played by Chloe East) (the character is happily religious)

Go around to spread the word of God on their bikes, one unfortunate day when it starts raining they head to this guy’s house in the middle of the woods, named Mr. Reed (played by Hugh Grant).

He invites these 2 girls in for tea and cookies which he promises his wife is making, he then tries to give them a lesson on Christianity and any religion.

Every time Hugh Grant would educate these 2 girls, I was sitting there just thinking yes plz tell me more. Because I found what he was saying to be fascinating.

Seems he’s already up to date on earthing, also he might not be the innocent nice guy he makes himself appear as. Because he locks them in the house and seems to refuse to let them go, only being vague saying u can always leave.

U have a choice, so what is Hugh Grant’s angle here? Will he or will he not let these 2 girls escape? Will these 2 girls make it out alive?

All will be revealed in the spoilers, but first, let’s get the rating out of the way.

Overall I absolutely loved the film, yeah I know right? The movie about religion is a movie I liked when I didn’t like religion.

But Hugh Grant does a phenomenal job playing an unhinged villain, this guy needs to star in more horror movies. Also yes plz cast Sophie Thatcher in more movies, she’s becoming a great actress in my opinion.

Let’s just forget she starred in The Book Of Boba Fett, the more we forget about that show, the better.

Also plz don’t let the religious angle prevent u from going to see this film, it’s really a good film. I recommend it, the only issue I have is in a way I find the ending to be sorta anti-climatic.

I wanted a bit more, but hey I’m happy with what we got, so I’ll give Heretic a solid 9/10. Warning spoilers ahead y’all been warned ⚠️.

So what is the message of the film about y’all are wondering? Well glad u asked, so Hugh Grant’s whole motivation is to make u question the nature of religion and belief and encourage people to think for themselves.

For example, the things he preaches in this film are about

Critique of religion
The movie criticizes how religion can be used to divide people. (Yes I agree with him there)

Question belief
The movie challenges the audience to question their understanding of belief and miracles. (Yes I agree with him there)

Encourage thought
The movie encourages people to think for themselves instead of blindly believing. (Yes I agree with him there)

I mean he tricked them into getting inside the house even though the 2 girls said they couldn’t enter a stranger’s home without an adult.

He tricked them by saying my wife’s inside.

She’s making pie.

U can use my phone to contact ur church.

Was the wife making pie? No, he doesn’t have a wife. Turns out he just put a blueberry-flavored pie-scented candle in front of them, again think think.

Hope and Faith
The movie suggests that hope and faith can be used to highlight common humanity. Yes I agree with him there)

Here’s the scene where he lays it all out to these 2 girls, by using board games as an example of what he’s talking about.

Also, he lays it out to them by showing them 2 doors, which he says lead to the way out of there.

He makes both doors as faith or no faith (if I remember correctly).

He essentially says if ur not religious and pretending to be religious then that’s a sin, if you are religious and only believe in one God then that is also a sin.

Also, I just love Hugh Grant in this film, he freaking compares Star Wars The Phantom Menace, mainly Jar Jar Binks to religion. Yeah, don’t ask me how he made that comparison.

Lolo what a great actor.

Anyway they both end up picking the door that says faith, spoilers it leads them to a basement.

So come the third act Hugh Grant stabs Sophie’s character because he knows she’s a sinner, he also wants her friend to believe he has the power to resurrect her into something better which she will ascend from.

Spoilers he doesn’t have that power, his only power is through manipulation and drugs. He drugged a bling girl he had in her basement to dir in front of them after eating a pie.

While both girl’s eyes were closed, another girl came in and replaced the body with herself and pretended to wake up, also pretending she saw the other side.

How does Paxton come to this realization? Easy she sees a trapdoor in the basement which she enters, down there she finds several women caged up like animals.

Again his only power is manipulation and control. Anyways he comes down there, she stabs him with a knife and proceeds to escape back up the trapdoor. She gets knocked on the floor and as she’s about to get killed off.

Sophie Thatcher’s character stabs Hugh Grant’s character, no don’t ask me how she’s still alive because she got stabbed and was bleeding out.

Anyway now she finally does die, so then Paxton escapes through a window and the film ends with her walking into the woods and noticing a butterfly, the end. I hope y’all enjoyed this review as much as I did.
