Avatar 2 The Way Of Water š§
Let’s start by stating the fact that…. it’s hard to still tell if this film was necessary….especially 13 years later….because we’ve gotten so many films with great visuals and great plots….so what will this film bring to the table? Well, not much actually except except for visuals….my goodness the visuals in this film are stunning….I recommend checking this film out in 3D….the 3D is absolutely gorgeous, u won’t regret it…..anyways here are the trailers…enjoy
Firstly the rating, honestly if I have to be honest. I’d say I really enjoyed the visuals, the world-building, the locations, the cinematography, the soundtrack…that’s all amazing, what I have issues with is the characters…they range from bland to one-dimensional (I’m looking at u the villains) especially Quaritch…
Heck even the main good guy characters can come off as bland and one-dimensional as well….honestly if James Cameron is gonna continue forward with more Avatar films, he needs to add birth more character development such as
Adding some depth to them
Some comedy
Also, stop forcing a heavy message about how nature is good, and humans are bad…yes we get it….that’s a great message, but when u do it twice in a total of 2 movies it starts becoming repetitive and feeling forced….
Also, lastly, this film did not need to be 3 hours long, yeah this film is 3 hours and 15 min long…oh boy, in all honesty, they needed to cut content out of this movie…there’s stuff that could have and should have been cut…but wasn’t, James Cameron keep that in mind for Avatar 3…hire an editor…
It got to the point when I was in the theatre watching this movie in IMAX that I started getting a bit bored, so I got a bit frantic with my legs. Yeah, try going in without getting bored.
Really the only great thing to come out of this film was the Lego sets, yeah I kid u not I prefer the Lego avatar sets.
BTW another compliment I can and will give this film it turns out the actors had to hold their breaths for 7 min each segment underwater for them to film it. Yeah, I couldn’t hold my breath for 7 min. None of those ocean scenes was a green screen.
They filmed those parts in the ocean, wow I gotta give them props for going that far for acting.
Although at some points I was sitting there and thinking about what the ocean scenery looks like to me, u know how when u go to Costco and there’s those big TVs on display? And how they have visuals playing on the screen.
Sometimes the visual being the ocean? Yeah that’s what rhe visuals in this film reminded me of, it reminded me of those giant TV displays at Costco.
On a side note I don’t get these pretentious asshole directors, get this James Cameron has been on a rant for many years about how superhero movies ruin cinema and the stories aren’t good. Really dude? So Avatar The Way Of Waters script was the best u could think of? And u thought this was class A story telling?
Then there’s Martin Scorsese who’s out there been saying Marvel/superhero movies are too long, really do u have room to judge dude? When u made Killers Of The Flower Moon which was 3 and a half hours long!
Seriously what’s with these pretentious director’s?
Also he said he wants to keep making Avatar movies until he dies (oh how wonderful) but also he said he wants to train someone else to take his place to continue to make more Avatar films when he dies because and I quote “I’m the only one who knows how to make Avatar films”.
Dude seriously ur films aren’t that complex, also furthermore I’m fine yeah I don’t want more Avatar films, especially until u die Mr. James Cameron. But I wish u all the luck in the world.
So overall, I’ll give this film a solid 4/10…
Warning ā ļø, massive spoilers ahead……y’all have been warned…
So to uh summarize the plot of this film….after 13 years ago when the Navi won against the humans…the humans have left….and during those 13 years uh Jake and Neytiri ended up having some kids…..who are named Lo’ak, Tuk, and Neteyam….also apparently when Sigourney Weaver’s character died in the first film….uhh nature somehow impregnated her so she gave birth a girl Navi named Kiri….so Jake and her family adopt her…also Kiri is voiced by Sigourney Weaver btw…..yeah isn’t that confusing?…….
Oh, and they have a human friend named Spider, who is raised with them, even though Sully seems to have an issue with him as if he’s racist against humans. Dude, u were once human!
BTW I have an issue with the 4 kids Sully has, they follow a trope. I kid u not they may as well be the walking trope, such as.
Got the small kid girl who always gets caught, to pull at the audience’s emotions.
Got the smart intelligent older sister, who doesn’t feel like she fits in the family and is trying to find her worth.
Got the kid who’s not respected by his dad as much as his older brother “Ohhhh why dad doesn’t respect me as much as u do?”
He has an older brother who is favored by his father, and he can do no wrong type of kid.
Oh and the older brother has go get his younger brother out of the situations he always finds himself in, which happens about 6 times in this film!
Do u see the issue here? All these characters are just stereotypes of teenagers and kids.
Oh also the other Navi kids we see in this film speak like black character tropes, they talk like “What up bro?” “Where u getting st bro!” “Want to go hang out with us, bro!”. What the hell is going on here?
Also anyway guess who else is back? That’s right the villain from the first film….who was Colonel Quaritch….he’s been revived in a Navi body including his lieutenants……here’s how so apparently day one they landed on Pandora they made a video…..of themselves and the humans took that put that in an Avatar body and brought them back so they Essentially just took there memories and minds and put them into Avatars…….
Oh, wonderful this really reminds me of the Emperor from star wars episode 9….wait both are made by Disney! Holy shite.
But also this just brings up so many questions, such as wait hold up if y’all have the ability to put ur past memories into a Navi body, essentially bringing urself back from the dead. Then how the hell have y’all humans not figured out how to stop ur extinction?
This is extremely stupid. So let me get this straight, y’all can clone Navi bodies but can’t clone human bodies? Yeah my thought is stop thinking about for too long, u will only give urself a headache.
Anyways so now the humans return but this time they want to colonize the planet because the earth has become uninhabitable……they attack the Forrests even destroying the Navis homes so they have to leave….so they go hide in trees…..btw while this is happening Colonel Quaritch and his squad land In the woods to learn more about how their human selves died I guess….
Anyways so he finds his human skeleton which then he picks the skull up and smashes the skull in his hands……huh that’s very Shakespearian…..here’s the clip.
Anyways Kiri and Lo’ak, Tuk, Neteyam, and their human friend named Spider come out behind the bushes and they get caught……but luckily Jake and his wife show up to help the kids escape hut unfortunately Spider gets left behind because Quaritch takes his son captive yeah he recognizes his son….after a little while.
Anyway, let’s just give a summarization of what the entire second act is.
⢠Sully and his family leave for a water tribe because they think their staying will put their people in danger, no idk how. And better yet why putting the water tribe in danger is a better idea?
⢠The entire second act is just James Cameron showing off oh look how good the ocean is, look at it is gorgeous.
I kid u not when I say this but we just got scenes of characters and the main characters swimming around in the ocean, learning to swim. Oh, and there’s a subplot where Kiri wants to find any connection to her dead mom Dr. Grace.
BTW yes both characters are played by Sigourney Weaver, so she tried to connect her braids into a plant in the ocean that connects to the afterlife.
Are y’all starting to see what I mean by this is James Cameron’s wet dream? Also Kiri gets a seizure. Sully’s human friends come to examine her, and guess what’s determined she can’t connect her braids to anything such as that again otherwise she will die.
Why? Who the hell knows why, guess we will have to wait for 3 or 4 or 5 to find out. I don’t want that nah I’m good. This whole film feels like one giant setup for part 3, if u ask me that’s worse. Because we just essentially just wasted 3 hours of our lives just for set up only.
Also Kiri is set up as like a Jesus type of character, where she was born in her dead mother’s stomach which makes no sense, and now she has powers to connect to life and see things. Yeah tell me where u heard any of this before.
Look how amazing the ocean is. Isn’t it great? Humans suck. Anyway, we also get a subplot where Spider is teaching the Navi way to Colonel Quaritch because turns out he’s his father. Say what now? When did Quaritch have time to? U know what never mind.
Anyway, he teaches him and his men how to fly the flying creatures, his dad tries to turn Spider into one of them but he refuses to join the bad guys.
⢠also there’s another sublop where Sully’s outcast son makes friends with an outcast whale, for u see this whale according to the tribe failed to protect the tribe and lured the humans back to them. So they consider the whale a bad omen and an outcast, awwwww poor whale.
But in reality (the son finds this out by attaching himself to the whale inside his mouth). The whale saw the humans attack his family and tried to go back to warn the tribe. Fuck this just got hard.
Also on a side note when the outcast kid is left in the out of bounds ocean area to be left to get killed by a shark, I has the thought in my head so he’s gonna be saved by a bigger creature. Yeah my mind went straight to thinking about Star Wars The Phantom Menace, to quote Qui-Gon “There’s always a bigger fish”.
And guess what the outcast whale saves him, wow what a shocker.
Also I say subplot but this outcast whale plot gets heavily focused on in this film, as if it’s leading to something big. Trust me it really wasn’t.
Also, the outcast son is getting bullied by the tribe leader’s sons, yes this film has stereotype bullies, oh lovely.
⢠oh but things are about to get way harder to watch, warning, a massive trigger warning now. Something triggering is gonna come up, if any of y’all don’t like seeing animals getting hurt or dying just stop reading now.
So we see the humans (including Navi Colonel Quaritch and his men) head to the ocean to kill a whale. Yeah, so remember how in the first film the human’s goal was to mine an ore? Well, this time around it’s to hunt down these alien whales that have this liquid in them.
Why is this liquid necessary? Well, it helps them create this fountain of youth type of thing that will save the human race, yeah I don’t want that. Keep the animals alone.
Also, remember how I said trigger warning ahead? If u thought me mentioning that they killed a whale was already too much. Just hold on a second, I didn’t even mention yet that James Cameron showed the whole process to the audience.
Which involved the humans taking a harpoon to a mother whale with her baby infants near her, having to witness the humans killing their own mother. Then drag her dead carcass to attract the liquid from inside her mouth.
Oh, and on top of that watching the baby whales cry in agony at the sight of seeing their mom die all the while the dying mom is staring at her kids with a sad look. Jesus fucking Christ, this was completely unnecessary.
Look I get it James Cameron, humans can suck. Yes they kill animals and that’s abysmal (even I agree) but I didn’t pay to go see a movie to just sit there for 5 min watching a mother whale die slowly in front of her crying infants.
That’s horrible, I felt horrible after watching that. No better yet I felt disturbed watching that scene. I was like,
Am I the villain for watching this? Am I complicit? Should I recycle more? Should I apologize to the ocean?ā
There is however one scene right after this that made me break out in laughter, one of the people says this vile right here of whale liquid that stops humans from aging (basically the fountain of youth). The guy says this one vile is worth $80 million.
I’m sorry what? $80 million? U telling me the Elixir of Life is only worth $80 million? Dude this movie costs way more than that! Hahahahah did no one fact-check that to make it sound more logistic? $80 million yeah get the hell out of here.
BTW I know I’ve not talked about Sully as much this time, it’s because he’s sidelined. What we do get of him he just comes off as a dick, on one hand, I get it in almost every scene he’s having to scold his kids for getting in trouble there, especially since they just got there and don’t want to be kicked out.
But also some of the times the kids get in trouble it had nothing to do with them, it was thanks to the bullies. Yet u see no one scolding them, but Sully’s outcast son gets it worse. Sully literally says to him “U bring shame to our family” Oh come on that’s not necessary to say to ur own kid.
Also, I find it funny that the bullies never get scolded at, because there’s one point where they become Stephen King bullies and try to murder the outcast kid by taking him to the out-of-bounds of their reefs and letting him get eaten by a deadly sea creature.
Look Sully I know ur a guest here but I’d pull over the chief and say the hell is wrong with ur kids? Get ur kids in control. I wouldn’t be happy about someone else kids trying to murder my own kids.
⢠anyways moving on, so let’s just get to the third act, which btw I kid u not the entire 3rd act is like 1 hour long. Yeah, no offense but no 3rd act should ever be 1 hour long, where the 3rd act in the first film was like 20 minutes at best, here we have 1 hour of a 3rd act.
If ur wondering how long that second act was? It was roughly 1 and a half hours long. Anyways the humans show up and Colonel Quaritch, they takes Sully’s 2 daughters hostage and his 2 sons because the small one just had to do her trope and get them caught, lovely.
Anyway he demands to have Sully, also btw a minor difference from this Colonel Quaritch to the last film, here he’s a gentleman he acknowledges Sully’s wife and nods his head then says Ms. Sully.
Let’s face it Colonel Quaritch would never say anything like that in the first film, he looked at the creatures as beneath him.
Also yes Colonel Quaritch is still as flat and generic as he was in the first film, better yet the humans are still douchebags in this film. This film correctly paints a light on how awful humans can be.
So I’m not gonna talk about this entire 3rd act mainly because it’s 1 hour long, but what I will say is the battle takes place on a floating ocean base that starts sinking.
The whale comes in and saves the day by grabbing and knocking over one of their ships, also the battle is way too long even the movie turns to nighttime by the time the battle comes to a close.
Yeah, even the film agrees too long! Anyways so they go save the 2 sons but the son who is favored ends up getting shot. They take him to land where the son dies in his parent’s arms, shittttttte.
We get an emotional scene of Neytiri breaking out into screams and crying, Sully barely even breaks a tear for some reason.
So Colonel Quaritch still has the 2 daughters, and says u for them the deal is still the same.
Oh, get this right after he hears Colonel say that he looks at his younger son and says, wheres ur your sisters! Where’s ur sisters? Dude calm down. Stop yelling at ur own kid as if ur blaming him for this, yeah what a great dad huh?
So they go and save the daughters and Jake Sully goes to battle Quaritch, u know bit of revenge for his son dying.
Anyways the base starts sinking so now it’s a ticking time bomb to get out of here before they all drown, Sully and Quaritch are fighting each other underwater. Well, technically Sully has Quaritch in a death lock. Also, this scene is accompanied by the same music that played during the first film when Quaritch died. Glad to see originality is dead.
So he chocks out Quaritch, and here is what officially frustrates me. The film could have let Quaritch die and we could go on our ways, but nope James Cameron wants to have him be in Avatar 3 for some reason. So he gives some contrived reason for Spider to save Quaritch. Because he’s his dad.
Ok but why save him? The guy is a monster, he killed Sully’s son, and better yet was about to kill all the Navi and yet u want to save this piece of shite? SMH, anyway he takes Quaritch onto a rock where Quaritch offers a hand to his son.
Wants him to come with him, but Spider refuses to. Well, I say refuses to but all he says is EEEEEEEKKK! Hahahahahaha I’m sorry what? Then he jumps into the ocean
So Quaritch just heads on out on a flying creature, lovely.
For some reason, Spider wants to stay with the Navi, even though just a couple min ago Neytiri aimed a knife at Spider and threatened to kill Colonel Quaritch’s son because he killed one of her kids. Jesus Christ, I mean she’s in the right for that but still.
Oh btw when she threatens to kill Spider, Colonel Quaritch says go ahead. He’s not one of my species, uh huh sure.
Oh and throughout this film Sully refers to Spider as a stray cat in this film.
No seriously Spider why do u want to stay with these people?
I wonder if down the line he will address that he saved Quaritch, also they are gonna have to come back around to the fact Neytiri almost threatened to kill Spider.
On a side note throughout this entire third act all I could think was this feels like Titanic, that’s because the third act is taking place on a giant structure sinking slowly into the water, all the while our main characters are trying to make their way off the base before drowning.
Hmmmmmm doesn’t that seem and sound familiar!?
Oh while this is happening Sully is rescuing his family who are trapped in a room in the sinking base.
So they eventually make it out safe and sound I guess. Anyways they bury their son in the ocean, to be one with the water tribes ancestors. Jake and his family leave but before they go the chief says ur son is buried here among us so ur one of us.
How sweet? Anyways the end (until next time of course). Jeepers I’m sorry plz remind me how’s it this film made over billions of dollars?
No seriously how? Why do we keep giving our money to James Cameron? The guy seems to not really care if he gives us good storytelling.
There’s nothing unique to his storytelling, anyways I’m done I hope y’all enjoyed these 2 reviews. Also here’s a tease for the next review I’m working on.

Till next time
This one goes out to a friend of mine named Lucy (she’s not dead, we’ve separated) Lucy and I saw this one together, back when things felt a little easier. Weāve gone separate ways since then, but that memory still means something to me. I hope sheās doing alright. This is a little thank you to her.
