Nosferatu: so if yall are wondering….yes this is a retro review, why? Easy because Voyage of the Demeter just came out so in preps for it I’m doing a retro review on one of the most iconic pieces of cinema history if u ask me…..so let’s get into this review, shall we? Btw this will be a slightly short review because there’s not much to talk about since this is a silent film….
So where do I even begin, well firstly this film is blatantly just Dracula….to the point that the company and film got sued by Bram Stoker’s wife, yeah thats a piece of fun fact for today…..also she won that court case, they were supposed to destroy every copy of this film….but seems like they didn’t because to this day u can people can buy it on DVD plus it’s on the streaming service shudder, so I’m questioning how well they got rid of every copy? Must have not been that well done….
BTW there’s a misconception (again) but this time it has to do with the fact that people think the vampire’s name is Nosferatu when it is not…his name is Count Orlock…don’t think it helps that in an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants titled Night Shift, the vampire appears in the episode at the end…
Why? Idk either, what kid is gonna get that reference? Anyways there in the episode they call him Nosferatu, when again just like the situation with Frankenstein….the vampire’s name isn’t Nosferatu…its Count Orlock, jee wiz can people get facts right just for once?
So without further due let’s get into the review shall we?
But first the rating, overall i actually really enjoy this silent horror movie, which is weird for me to say since I don’t usually like silent movies….but that should tell u how much it speaks to the success of this film….so overall I’ll give this film a solid 10/10…
Well for this review we’re gonna do something different, I’m gonna give a brief synopsis of the plot then mention my favorite iconic creepy moments, mention some facts and oh yeah of course mention the ending
So in this silent movie, our main character named Hutter who lives in a made-up town in Germany called Vissborg….anyways his boss named Mr. Knock is reading a letter that has some form of Gibberish on it and symbols, and he starts to go slightly insane….he tells Hutter that this guy named Count Orlock wants to buy a house in the area near where Hutter lives….and that Count Orlock lives out in a castle…also Hutter opens a book and starts reading a book called Nosferatu that warns of an evil vampire….ok then, not as if this will become relevant later right? Hehehehe….so he heads out to the castle to sign some papers with the Count so he can move….how does he get to the castle? Easy by a boat…once he gets there a carriage comes rolling up with Count Orlock riding it…so Hutter hops on in and they head to the castle….
So that night at the dinner table while Count Orlock is going through the papers, Hutter is cutting a potato to eat….he accidentally cuts his finger which causes Count Orlock to start sucking on Hutter’s thumb which scares him understandably and he runs to his room and falls asleep somehow….he wakes up next day finding 2 small holes on his neck, he informs his wife Ellen that he thinks it’s mosquitoes bites….
Ok is Hutter dumb? The previous night Count Orlock started sucking on his cut and he wakes up with 2 bite marks and believes it’s mosquitoes? Seriously? Not like Count Orlock is good at hiding he’s a vampire I mean when they continue to look through the papers a locket of his wife falls out of his pocket onto the table and Count Orlock picks it up and says “She has a beautiful neck” ok come on Count ur not even trying to hide the fact ur a vampire anymore…..try harder.
Anyways that night Hutter is in his bed he gets up and opens the door open where he sees Count Orlock standing across the room wearing a long black trench coat….has pale skin, long ears, rat-like teeth, long fingers….small strands of hair on the top side of the ears, bushy eyebrows and pointy nose….so Hutter goes back in his bed and puts the sheets over his head….yeah I’d be horrified as well, also Count Orlock starts walking into Hutter’s room, the first iconic shot we see Count Orlock standing in the doorway…which has become an iconic shot, and as soon as he gets up to Hutter to suck his blood we see Ellen at her house in Vissborg and she starts having visions seeing things….
She can see Count Orlock about to bite Hutter…everyone else thinks she’s losing her mind…understandable, and Count Orlock is hovering over Hutter with his hands up in a spooky way…..then we get a cool shot where he stands up and turns around as if he can see her and we cut back to Ellen pointing her arms in a stressful way towards him as if they can both see each other even though they’re far away from each other….then Orlock heads out the room and the door closes on its own….so he has telepathic powers…..
Anyways later on Hutter locates Count Orlock in his wooden coffin in like an underground part of the castle……btw this scene is eerie, we see Hutter going up to the coffin to peep through a hold in the coffin and he sees Count Orlock staring back at him….granted he ain’t starring back at him, he’s just asleep with his eyes open…then he steps back in fear, then goes and shoves the lid off and we see Count Orlock in the coffin with his long hands and nails just laying straight across down his chest….then Hutter runs off understandable….
Anyways so now Hutter has to try to escape but while he’s trying to figure out how he’s gonna escape….through the window in his room he sees outside a carriage and a horse then sees Count Orlock putting coffins with dirt on them onto the carriage….at an extraordinary speed…they used stop motion for this scene to show the uncanny levels of speed he has, and for the final coffin he places at the top of the pile of coffins…he gets into it and uses his mind powers to summon the lid onto his coffin, then the carriage heads out to the docks to get onto a boat….
Then this entire 2-ish min becomes Voyage Of The Last Demeter….If u don’t know what movie that is I highly recommend my review on the film…
BTW I’m gonna post a link here to all the scary vampire moments in this film. Hope y’all enjoy the nightmares.
So where was I? Oh right so Count Orlock lands in England to continue his vampire ways after he killed everyone on board the Demeter….once again this is just the Count Dracula story.
So anyways, now a possessed Hutter opens up Count Orlocks coffin….allowing him to go around the Demeter and kill off everyone….so the ship is found crashed on land with everyone dead…Hutter gets locked up in an insane asylum because they think he’s lost his mind…
Count Orlock has now found his way to England…..he ends up locating Hutter’s wife by stalking her across her home from his new home he’s now staying at.
Anyways that night Hutter’s wife has a plan, she plans to sacrifice herself and kill off Count Orlock….by allowing him to suck her dry, near the end of the night….so then the sun rises and burns him to ashes….oh clever girl.
Also, we see Count Orlock standing at his window across from her…he’s just posing for some reason, he has his arms up sideways all while staring at her….yeah he’s just posing for some reason.
Anyway we see his shadow of him walking up the stairs to her room, he opens the door….he goes to her bites down on her neck….the sun comes up, he tries running past the window for some reason but he gets caught in the sun and turns to ash….
Good riddance and that’s Nosferatu….ok so y’all see what I mean by this is just the story of Count Dracula? Anyway hope y’all enjoyed this review….btw This isn’t a tease of the next review I’m working on but I’m gonna leave a tease of the poster for the upcoming Nosferatu remake that’s releasing on Christmas this year.
