US: Let’s start by showing y’all the trailers shall we?
Since this is a Universal film, you know what that means? Cue the logo!
So where to begin? Well, I wanna address the fact that yes I’m indeed late to reviewing this film…I do apologize for that
Now let’s get the rating out of the way so I can get through a summary of the plot…overall I’m conflicted, on the one hand, I enjoyed it…on the other hand, I figured out the plot twist 5 minutes into the film, I’ll explain that soon…and the ending left me extremely baffled….
But Jordan Peele proves again to be a horror master, let this guy keep doing horror films…so overall I’ll give this film a solid 7.8/10 I still recommend watching this film. Warning spoilers ahead y’all been warned….
So this movie starts off with a child version of our main character who’s name is Adelaide…she’s at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk….which btw I went to a lot with my sister when me and her were kids….here’s a TV ad for the place for anyone who wants to relive some nostalgia, or for anyone who’s never heard of the place.
“At the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk! In a warm California sun!”
Anyways so that night at the Boardwalk Adelaide gets lured away by a noise, away from her family while her family argues….she finds herself in a fun house with mirrors where she bumps into an identical clone of her…well, I say bumps into, I meant more jumpscares into…
She’s nervously looking around at the mirrors, and she bumps into a clone of her while her back is turned, she gasps….we then see her exit out of the fun house where her parents are worried and happy to see her…..btw this is where I figured out the plot twist, I right away could tell so she got captured and the clone has taken her spot as there kid….
Yeah, how did I figure that out? Well here’s how,
1. I knew she’d not be able to fight back, she’s just a kid. And kids are mainly stupid.
2. I swear we’ve had the Switcheroo twin clone story before…so it’s predictable at this point when a clone or twin of a character shows up.
3. Her personality after coming out of that fun house from then on went from a bright cheery person to a deadpan silent girl.
So either she saw something traumatic, hence why her family takes her to therapy…or the clone took her and took her place because once again it’s quite obvious…
Anyway, many years later Adelaide also known as Red (each of them has a nickname) is now an adult….she has a family…her husband is named Gabe Wilson aka Abraham (Played by Winston Duke).
There 2 kids, a daughter named Zora Wilson also known as Umbrae
Their son is named Jason Wilson aka Pluto….he’s the odd one. He wears a monkey mask over his face, he’s kinda mostly silent….
Anyways the fad wants them all to go to Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk….dun dun dun….trauma of hers starts coming back, so she refuses to go back…but after her husband begs and begs she reluctantly agrees to go.
So when they get there on the way to their beach home they spot an ambulance on the road loading in a dead person….uh oh, he’s been slaughtered….
So anyways that night while they are relaxing…this group of people show up outside their house, so the dad decides to go outside with a metal baseball bat to confront them….what?
So yeah as u can see this guy is way braver than I’d be in this situation….if I saw 5 people standing in the dark not moving and just staring at me I’d be shitting my pants….
Anyways they sneak on into the house, and the father goes back in the house and says let’s call the cops…oh really now let’s call the cops? So the intruders break in, ties the family up…they reveal to be exact duplicates of the family…and I mean exact duplicates…
Heck, the son’s duplicate is wearing a mask, just a different mask… as a sack for a mask….also the duplicate mother talks for the first time….it unnerved me when she spoke..
As u can see the doppelganger speaks in this low raspy voice….yeah, I hate this, just stop…stop with any of that….well, I guess that’s a good thing that a horror movie is making me unnerved…. Anyway, the doppelganger mother forces the mother to handcuff herself to the table…
She has her 2 kids go play with the 2 kids, the doppelganger father takes the father outside to kill with the bat…also he steals his glasses, uhhh why?
Anyway, he eventually escapes to his dinky boat he brought…..he’s able to succeed at killing the doppelganger via the boat engine, yikes….
Adelaide is eventually able to escape, also the doppelganger is threatening her life with a pair of silver scissors……uhhhhh, btw The 2 boys are playing with each other, well I say play with each other but there sitting in front of each other staring at each other doing movements….mimicking one another…
They both take their masks off, the doppelganger’s face is revealed to be all burnt, yikes…
Anyway they escape they head to their neighbor’s house who are friends with them… their friends consist of
A husband named Josh Tyler (played by Tim Heidecker)
His wife Dahlia (played by Elisabeth Moss)
Their 2 daughters named
Becca Tyler (Played by Cali Sheldon)
Lindsey Tyler (Played by Noelle Sheldon)
They try to go over to warn them of the doppelgangers….unfortunately, the doppelgangers get there and slaughter everyone there, womp womp….so our characters get there and see they’re dead, they also see their doppelgangers come after them….so they head out in their car away from this place….
On the road when they think they’re safe…also it’s now morning so everything feels safe, except it isn’t…because the doppelgangers have blocked the upcoming road with cars to block them…..so they get out of the car, just then the doppelganger of that son shows up, ignites a fire to a path of gasoline that leads to their car…
They get out of the car, the doppelganger boy walks through the flames as if it’s nothing, all while this goes down…anyways Pluto backs up behind a car….then the doppelganger’s mother shows up and kidnaps him Dunn dunn dunn..
So now they have to go rescue their son, and the mother realizes where the doppelgangers may have taken him…back to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in that fun house…it might be an entrance to a secret place they’re living at…
On the way there they see all these doppelgangers’s out and about just holding each other’s hands in a row…no idk why either..
Anyway the mother makes it into the doppelganger’s secret place which is this pure white vacant place with some chairs In the hallway….also she leaves her husband and kids outside to get an ambulance truck up and running so they can escape when it’s time….
Anyways so the mother locates the other mother…..she tries to get her son back…but the other mother basically tells her she was raised down here with a broken throat…but these people healed her back up…she became one of them, she trained them and led them…
When the time was right which is now she’d lead them to the upper world….womp wokp, so anyways the 2 of them get into a fight in the hallway….the other mother dodges the mother’s attacks by dancing…..won’t lie she is talented…
Anyways the mother ends up stabbing the other mother with her pair of scissors…hm clearly there’s a dark side to this mother, she ends up locating her son who’s in a closet….
Anyway, they leave, and head into the ambulance, and ride off….where the son gives his mom a look then he puts his mask down….I think he’s suspicious of something….maybe it has to do with the fact this mother we’ve been following throughout the film was actually the doppelganger all along….and the doppelganger mother was the real mother…
Yeah, what a twist right? Well here’s the thing I figured out this plot twist within the first 5 min…as I said when I spoiled this in the beginning, that I could tell this would be the case because of the fact what chance would a little girl who’s on her own have against another kid her size who just got the element of surprise on her?
Also, it also explains her tonal shift in attitude after that night….funny enough when I watched this film…I was watching it with my sister, she had already seen the film but this was my first time seeing it….when I figured out the plot twist within the first 5 min I told my sister I figured it out and I said so she’s the doppelganger right? And the real kid got replaced?
Which my sister said in a worried tone trying to hide the truth from me “No what? Don’t be silly, what makes u say that?” Then she proceeded to text her boyfriend about it…she told him “My brother figured out the plot twist within the first 5 min, he’s onto us” Lololo…
Yeah either that plot twist was so predictable, or I just seen so many films with similar plot twists…
Anyways the film ends with the camera pandering over to a sky view camera…revealing every doppelgangers holding hands across the world….in a row, no idk what this ending means at all…I’m as confused as y’all….
Anyways hope y’all enjoyed this review, also here’s a tease for the next review I’m working on….see y’all next time.
