Frankenstein

Frankenstein: yes this is another retro review as
Well…..because I wrote a review on I, Frankenstein a while back….so why not tackle this iconic classic….also here’s the trailer

Since this is a Universal film, Yall know what that means? Cue the Universal Logo!

Honestly, this is one of my favorite classic movies of all time….so without further a due let’s get into the review shall we?

But first the rating, overall I mean I really enjoy this film like a lot, heck it’s become one my favorite classic horror movies of all time…..also the iconic look of Frankenstein’s monster in this film is iconic for a reason….I do just have 2 slight issues with this film….it’s that when u compare it to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein novel, this film falls heavily on its face…..

It’s funny ever since I’ve recently been listening to Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein novel it becomes abundantly clear how different the novel is compared to the Borris Karloff movie…..here’s 3 major changes between the novel and the movie…

1.  In the novel the monster is described to look very very different then the way he’s depicted in the movie….In the novel Frankenstein’s monster is a lot more macabre, he’s described as having yellowish skin, a weathered body, long black flowing hair, watery eyes, pale white teeth, and blackened lips…also get this in the book the monster is made out of human parts and animal parts as well…hmm splendid…

BTW Frankenstein in the novel is a vegetarian who hates the idea of harming any living creature including humans…but it’s due to how people perceived him as and treat him like a monster….is that starts causing him to kill people….also he in the book I’d an extremely intelligent being who understands things….plus can speak full Intellectual sentences….

Unlike the movie (where I don’t understand how it got translated to) Frankenstein’s monster having dark green skin, short black hair, bolts on the neck, and a brown suit….also he’s dumb in this movie, and barely has the brain compacity to speak, outside of a few words in between groans and growls…

Look I’m not insulting the iconic Borris Karloff version, it’s a classic for a reason…its hand down still one of the best horror movies to this day, but I just wish we’d have a more accurate adaptation of the novel…

2.  The novel has a lot of darker elements to It that the film cuts out, such as a major point to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein novel is about the fact that should the monster be able to live or not? Because he wasn’t born naturally…but also he was just technically born, in a way….should he be accepted by humanity or not?

Also, another message of the novel is just because u can be ambitious and then create something new but can be dangerous…doesn’t mean u should do it…well that’s at least what I got out of reading the novel, for all I know yall might get a different interpretation of the meaning the novel is saying….also the novel does have a message about be careful how u treat things….

Also the novel is a warning of the consequences of what happens when people toy around and play God…huh kinda similar to Jurassic Parks message…..to quote Jeff Goldblum in the first Jurassic Park movie *yes but ur scientists were too occupied with they could, but never stopped to wonder If they should*

Also, the novel (spoilers for a century-old book) ends with Victor Frankenstein dead and the monster left in the snowy tundra, where he presumably goes off to commit suicide to end his pain and suffering…..yeah that’s a dark ending….

Too bad none of this movie adopts that, heck it avoids any of those like the plague….I highly recommend the novel btw, for anyone who doesn’t like reading (like me) there’s an audiobook of it on Spotify….if yall are curious…

Also 3. There’s a misconception for some reason, everyone for some reason thinks the monsters name is Frankenstein. When it’s not, that’s the name of the scientist who created the monster…the monster has no name, and irs sure as hell ain’t Frankenstein…

So let’s get the rating out of the way so we can dive into the story of Frankenstein, overall even with my nitpicks and wishes I still absolutely love this movie…even though I complain about it I can separate it from the source material, and look at it as a film…and as a film it works perfectly…well ok maybe not perfectly but near perfectly…

Now if yall are wondering why isn’t this movie at all like the novel? It’s because this film isn’t an adaptation of the novel, no instead its an adaptation of tbe stage play…huh so this adaptation is an adaptation of an adaptation? Well that’s strange…..

So I’ll give Frankenstein a solid 9/10…

Spoilers ahead for a nearly century-old film if yall care…if u do then leave now….

So we all know about this film…Henry Frankenstein (yes the Dr is named Henry in this film instead of Victor) and his hunchback partner dig up a grave of a recently deceased person who just a few seconds ago had a funeral…..so Henry Frankenstein and his hunchback partner dig up the corpse…take it back to his laboratory castle on the side of a hill….

There he starts stitching the monster using human pieces, all is left is the brain….so he sends his minion to go get a brain, so he brings back a brain….just not the brain of a smart person as Henry requested because his hunchback partner is a dumbass…that and he accidentally dropped the jar of brain that said the good brain…then he picked up another jar with brain in it that says bad brain or something like that…guess he didn’t read it…

And neither does Henry Frankenstein because he just puts the brain into his monster without reading the label….so they have a live audience in the castle to witness this creation….Henry hosts up the monster that’s lying dead on a wooden table, covered up with a cloth as well…towards up the ceiling where there’s an opening for him to be hosted up to so the lightning that’s out there will shock him to life…..yep they picked a rainy stormy weather like this one to do this experiment….

So he brings the monster to alive “it’s alive It’s alive It’s alive!”….anyways we know the story from here on out….

Frankenstein’s monster gets Shunned by Frankenstein because he deems him unattainable and to be a monster…he’s horrified by his creation…

The monster escapes his captivity in the dungeon, all while Egor is scaring him with a torch because he’s afraid of fire….

The monster bumps into a girl who’s playing at a lake, she isn’t afraid of him…heck she hands him a flower and then proceeds to ask the monster if it wants to play with her….ok either this is the most sweetest moment or the most stupidest moment…..u pick.

Anyways the father of the dead daughter brings her corpse to the major who’s on stage dealing with an angry mob.

Anyways they eventually agree the monster needs to be destroyed…..so they grab their pitchforks and torches….then proceed to head out to kill the monster.

So they chase the monster to a windmill, where Victor Frankenstein follows him into the windmill….the mob sets the windmill on fire, causing the monster to scream in fear….Victor and the monster get into a brawl….the monster grabs Victor and tosses his body onto one of the windmill propellers, then he falls on the floor…

No, he doesn’t die, even though he should have died from that…. Anyway the movie is over, the monster survives…the windmill burns down, Victor is alive…the mob leaves because they think the monster died…

The end, hope y’all enjoyed this review, also have a happy Halloween ļŽƒ I hope everyone has been having s great spooky Halloween month….here’s a tease for the next review I’m working on..
