Doctor Who 60th anniversary The Giggles

Doctor Who 60th Anniversary The Giggles:

Side note I wanted to mention I have a special fond memory to these 3 specials, because I was away in the Caribbean relaxing on the beach while these aired and watched them there, that was some happy times.

Ok so where to begin well firstly I wanna mention that for this episode they brought back a niche villain named the Toymaker who appeared 60 years ago during the first Doctors era….here’s an image of him…..and an image of the new Toymaker, back to back companion…

He’s a celestial being who cannot die, his whole Shtick is that he plays games with people because he got aboard, and he challenges them to a game…if they lose then he turns them into a toy, but if they win then they can leave, plus the Toymakers planet he made gets destroyed….but don’t worry he just makes another planet afterward, he can do that…

Anyway, the Doctor beat him back in the 1960s, when the Toymaker was played by the actor who went on to play Alfred in the Tim Burton Batman movies (that’s a fun fact for the day), if ur wondering how the Doctor beat the Toymaker? Easy he stayed inside his tardis so in case he won they could teleport out in time before the planet exploded, and while the doctor companion set up the mainframe to teleport them out, the Doctor finished the game’s final move the Toymaker set up for them, by uhh mimicking the Toymakers voice because the object on the game would only move via the Toymakers voice command….so, in other words, the Doctor got lucky that day, btw here’s the clip

BTW get this Neil Patrick Harris accepted the role of the villain in this episode, but he never heard of or knew anything about Doctor Who….yeah I’m surprised,  how can u not hear of Doctor Who? It’s hard to go in this day and age without hearing about Doctor Who….well I guess this series could be considered niche because it’s more popular in Britain where the show originated from

Also, I do quickly wanna talk about his outfit in that episode and how it got some controversy, well there are 2 controversies behind this character…

1st controversy: his outfit looks offensive because it’s a white man wearing a Chinese-like outfit, which yeah understandable

2nd controversy: the word celestial is offensive to Chinese people, which ok yeah that I completely understand….but here’s the thing he never was called the Celestial Toymaker, that was the name of the episode only…he was always called the Toymaker, but at same time I completely understand…

So firstly the rating, so this episode in my opinion is my favorite out of the 3, doesn’t mean it’s still the best….but once again I highly recommend it…so uhh 9.6/10, now let’s get into the review shall we? Also spoiler warning ahead, read at ur own caution…

So in this 3rd special named The Giggle, we see a back flash scene in Soho 1925, where we see a guy walk into a toy shop that’s colored red, the guy buys a doll named Bill from the store owner who’s played by Neil Patrick Harris, who’s hamming it up by 100 by speaking in an over the top German accent, he wishes the guy luck with his kids enjoying the toy, even after admitting he used real human hair for the doll…uh eww

But the guy instead takes it to his boss who he says is making a new invention called television, Dunn Dunn Dun, then we see him and his boss finalize the TV and use the head of the doll as the image on the TV…..which I’ll get to this later because I do have a fun fact about it…

For now, we cut back to the modern day and everyone is attacking each other, and everything’s in chaos….while the Doctor and Donna and Wilfred in a wheelchair being pushed by Donna are trying to get around the mess….a random guy wearing a suit and top hat comes outside and dances with the Doctor here that clip

Anyways, the military come takes Donna and Doctor away, she tells them to take her dad and watch an eye on her family…

So they both get taken to this tower building that’s being run by Kate Stewart, also the wheelchair lady is there as well from the first special, so they take them inside to show what going on…it’s this random noise on the TV that’s causing everyone to get mad at each other and act like they’re right all the time…..which leads to a little gag of a senator on TV saying why should I care? No seriously why should I care? About you all anyway? I don’t care!…..and Donna saying nothing changed there…

Also, the Doctor meets an old colleague companion named Mel, she’s somehow here and now working for Kate Stewart….

Ok, that’s a bit on the nose about politicians not caring about their citizens, also if yall thought that was on the nose, well, then Kate shows that they in the building are wearing these wrist things called the Zeedex that hold back the spike…this random robot in the corner named the Vlinx also brings it up as well…yeah don’t worry that random robot doesn’t come back up again lol Anyways…..The doctor asks what it is. So Kate shows him by having her people disable hers and show her brain scan on TV before they do that…

Then they disable it, she asks the Doctor how he is, and he says I’m fine…then she starts getting mad saying things like why are u asking? No no, I think it’s a violation of my civil rights!! Especially coming from an alien!! We’ve been infiltrated by an alien wearing a suit who’s giving orders! No, I’m In charge here!!….then she points fingers at Shirley and says and u!! U just sitting in ur wheelchair! I’ve seen u stand before!!….so they enable the thing back on her so she calms down, she apologizes….Donna asks why don’t they have everyone wear one of these and oh boy if yall thought the politician not giving any shites was too on the nose…well here’s this scene

They turn on the TV to the news of a woman saying  “They’re using this to control us, to monitor us! And microwave our brains! I am anti Zeedex…..sighhhhhh ok does anyone get the sneaky suspension that this feels like it’s taking a jab against Anti vaccers?

So then they show the Doctor the encrypted noise that’s making people this way, Donna decrypts because she recognizes it as a melody similar to what her daughter Rose did when she tried singing…..so they decrypt the sound and it a laughter but not just any laughter, it is this doll on the TV named Stooky Bill

Fun fact this is based on a real thing that happened, Stooky Bill, the laughing doll on TV was the first-ever image on TV when it was invented, it’s nice seeing Doctor Who taking from real-life events, granted this isn’t the first time they’ve done that…

Also, Kate Stewart offers Donna a job there because she did a great job decoding the message, Donna negotiates paid vacation and more money…and Kate says done, wow wait a go Donna….

So they locate the period Stooky Bill appeared which is back in the 1960s, so they head back there…where they find a toy shop…

They enter the building after the Doctor sees someone inside staring at him tauntingly

Here’s the clip of them entering and meeting the Toymaker

As soon as they enter, the guy at the desk is juggling balls, and starts mentioning how the ball was the first game invented ya….and he starts tossing balls individually at the Doctor, who keeps hitting them away….nice little detail but even though the guy at the desk is tossing balls at them he still has 3 balls juggling in his hands the entire time….yeah ain’t that a fun detail…

Anyway, the Doctor starts realizing who this guy is so he tells Donna to get back to the tarids…. she says what? U never tell me to go back? Why who’s this man? The guy says ahh but the Doctor is recognizing me, eh Doctor? And we get some flashback imagery of this guy named the Toymaker, so he realizes it’s the Toymaker…….Dunn dunn dunn

BTW nice little detail but the Toymaker is doing 2 different accents in this special, he changes from a German accent to an English accent…I think that was done on purpose because In the original show when the Toymaker first appeared, the way the Doctor was able to beat the Toymaker was by mimicking the Toymaker’s voice which moved the piece on his board game…so perhaps the Toymaker is now changing his voice so the Doctor can’t mimic his voice, ahhh very clever……

So he tells him we meet again Doctor….then he heads into his back room so the Doctor and Donna pursue him, bad mistake because now they’re trapped in an infinite expanding hallway that is filled with doors…so now they have to find a way out, the Doctor explains who the Toymaker is, he’s an eternal being who likes to trap people into doing games with them, and that he won once against him but he got lucky when he did so…..

So then the 2 of them get separated by doors, and now they each face 2 separate nightmare situations….the Doctor finds that random guy at the beginning of the episode tied up to a wall in wrapping….so he pulls him down, the guy says I played a dangerous game against the Toymaker and I lost, so the Doctor unwraps the guy revealing his body has been turned into a wooden puppet with strings…..”I have no strings on me” Lolo

So then this giant Toymaker appears over him, the roof tears open, and now there’s thunder and clouds, he says what u think of my place Doctor? Then he lifts the strings and controls the guy, then he changes the guy into the Doctor It’s creepy…

While Donna deals with some creepy porcelain dolls trying to attack her, awesome…I hate those things, they’ve always creeped me out, anyways they get reunited with each other…they find themselves in front of a puppet stage, where the Toymaker has them sit down and starts pulling out different puppets of the Doctor companions after Donna…he explains and shows her through a little puppet show how they died, the Doctor corrects him about a few of him….he said

Clara died heroically, and the Toymaker says well I guess that’s all right then?

Then for Bill (not Stooky Bill as Toymaker says to Donna), Doctor says she became an immortal being and lived her life with her lover…and he says well I guess that’s all right then?

And for Rory and Amy Pond, the Doctor says they got teleported back in time and lived out the rest of their lives together…which the Toymaker says well that’s just fine and dandy now isn’t it?

Lolo I love the Toymaker’s responses, Donna asks if this is all true…so the Doctor challenges the Toymaker to a challenge, so the Toymaker teleports them to a table where he sits down with the Doctor shuffling cards ready to play a game together, the Doctor asks him a question, he asks in the future what is it with everyone attacking each other and being right?

The Toymaker says easy it’s all a part of the game, all for the fun….so clearly this confirms something, time and years don’t mean a thing to the Toymaker because think of it how would this version of the Toymaker who they just teleported back 1920? Would know who Donna is? And know of the Chaos he created in 2023?

BTW he reveals he did a match against the master, and he lost so now he has him trapped in a golden tooth that he has in his mouth…ok that’s cool….hope that’s not hinting at something hmmm

Anyway Donna says to the Doctor don’t play this game, the Toymaker will cheat, with both the Doctor and Toymaker says how inconsiderate…..the Toymaker will never cheat, he’s bound to do games and if he loses it means he loses everything….so they play a game of cards the Doctor loses, but the Doctor points out were now tied, u now won and I won back then…..best 2 out of 3… winner takes it all…

So the Toymaker says since u beat me then and I beat u now, it’s only appropriate we do our final game in 2023…so he vanishes and the building starts collapsing, the Doctor and Donna escape and make it back to the tardis….with a small red box, yeah the Toymakers shop turned into a small box….he hands it to Kate and her men…they go back into the building, he mentions what they found…and this leads to my favorite moment…

This is a moment I didn’t think we needed or wanted but we got it and I’m happy we got it

Yes ur eyes don’t deceive u, that the Toymaker played by Neil Patrick Harris entering the building through a door, dancing and mouth singing to “Spice Girls Dance Song” What the hell is going on? I never knew we needed a Doctor Who collab with the Spice Girls but hey we got it and I’m happy about it…lol

So anyways we see how powerful the Toymaker is….the guards try shooting at him but he turns one guy into a pile of balls, with the soul of the guard in one of the balls which lands on the wheelchair lady’s lap.. like, then the guards still try shooting him but there bullets coming out gets instantly turned into roses….wow that’s special.

So he spawns outside the base on the platform where the giant big laser is…also did I forget to mention they had a giant laser which now he has…Kate asks him where her men are. He says I imagine there still falling…then we hear a splat in the background..a faint splat, damn that’s dark

So he starts playing games with them by shooting the floor and being like what game should we play next….then he says maybe I’ll kill one of the Doctor’s companions…..but the Doctor gets in the way and says it’s me u want not them and the Toymaker shoots a laser at the Doctor….oh no

So the Toymaker says it’s only appropriate I bested u in this form now we play the final game in your next form…so the Doctor starts regenerating, so both Donna and Mel walk up to the Doctor and say ur not gonna die alone…oh no I’m not ready to feel the pain of seeing David Tennant leave again…here we go.

Wait what is this he doesn’t regenerate? Then he asks them to pull on each side so they do which causes a whole separate Doctor Who to be yanked from him…so there are now 2 Doctor Who’s at once….huh? And he’s wearing no pants, so yeah here’s the clip…

For the first time, a Bi-Generation happens…..what’s the hell that means, also this new Doctor is played by Ncuti Gatwa…I don’t know what other shows or films he’s from, plz enlighten me in the comments below….so now there are 2 Doctors and they challenge the Toymaker to a game, which the Toymaker says that’s not fair….which they point out hey u did this to us, u wanted this…so it’s only fair…

So the Toymaker accepts their challenge, he asks what game…and they say the very first game…which Toymaker says ball? Then he spawns a ball then he says it’s fair u know that if u drop the ball (Proceeds to toss it at the Doctor) lose……wow that was cheating so the three of them do a game of catch the ball….yep heard that right, 3 grown men just doing catch a rubber ball…

Anyway the Toymaker loses when the ball falls off the building out of his grasp and the Doctor says we get our wish and we wish that u get banished forever

So he starts compacting down into a paper-thin version of himself while he says not fair, and he says my allegiance is coming…then he becomes folded and gets put into his box, so Kate orders her men to lock that box up in the lower depth of the building forever….so the gang walks away

We see the golden tooth on the floor near the edge of the roof and we see a mysterious hand yank it away with the master’s laughing playing in the background….oh no no no no plz no more bringing back the master, I’m getting sick and tired of him…they’ve over utilized him too much, change it up…use someone else…heck being back the Toymaker down the line because this here is officially the 2nd time he’s appeared in Doctor Who….bring him back! Not the master…

So anyway now both Doctors have to figure out what they gonna do with the fact there are 2 Doctors and only 1 tardis….so our new Doctor realizes something, he also gets a wish for beating the Toymaker…he hasn’t said his wish yet, so he pulls a hammer out of the floor, and goes outside the tardis…asks Kate and the wheelchair lady to stand back, then he takes a swing at the tardis which causes it to spilled into 2 tardises…..huh? Yeah so now there are 2 tardis…I’m so confused…

So now they both have their own tardis…the new one has a jukebox which David Tennant notices when he enters so he shakes his head nah not for me…also the new tardis has a ramp for wheelchairs people, well that’s good and necessary if u ask me…but he goes back into his original tardis which means our new Doctor takes the new tardis…so the new Doctor enters his new tardis, David Tennant enters and says u weren’t gonna leave without saying bye to us were u? And the new Doctor says of course not..they both hug…Donna and him hug…

They do a little bantering because the new Doctor calls David Tennant a young man..but no new Doctor is more younger man because he was just literally born, he says I love u both but get out….wow that was harsh, so the new Doctor leaves with his new tardis….David Tennant’s Doctor heads back with Donna and the family to have a family picnic…yes the Doctor having a picnic, never thought I’d see that ever…Wilfred is out shooting moles (meaning the actor died and they couldn’t film more scenes so they improvised), and the Doctor says don’t worry I put shields on the moles I love moles…well that’s an odd thing to say.

Also, the Doctor is telling a story to everyone about how he was once on a planet where everyone only spoke using their eyebrows…which the Doctor uses that technique but accidentally gets himself married to the queen, but doesn’t know how lol….anyways the dad brings out 2 pots of food. 1 vegetarian dish and other meat dish….they each pour a dish for their own…..

Donna asks if the Doctor is gonna stay around for a while he says perhaps….and that he’s never been happier than he is right now, also Rose pours herself some food from the vegetarian dish, or she thinks is the vegetarian dish because the dad mixed the 2 dishes by accident….lolo silly him…..and the final shot of this episode is of our new Doctor staring happily in the tardis

And the episode ends with the Doctor will return on Christmas day….so here are the trailers for next week’s episode

I cannot wait till this review gets posted, hope yall enjoy the review
