The Saw Franchise: So with the 10th movie coming out soon I thought that I would review the first 9 films……but this review will be slightly different, I won’t be reviewing 9 movies but instead I’ll be giving my opinion on this series, go on a tangent on why I think this series should have ended…where it should have ended, and how/why this movie series is way to repetitive….then my thoughts on the Gore-Porn genre of horror….ok with that out of the way let’s get into the rant shall we?

So where do I begin well firstly I personally think this series has gone on for way too long….like wayyy wayyy to long, we’re soon gonna be at the 10th movie that should tell yall how long this been going on for…..now if yall are wondering where I think this film series should have ended? Easy right after the 3rd film…..if yall are wondering why? Well I’ll get to that shortly but first I wanna give yall a slight back story on our main Villain John Kramer….

So John Kramer was once a loving husband who had a wife who works in a hospital anyways she soon gonna be giving birth yeah John will soon be a dad….but unfortunately that all changes for the worse when one night his wife is working at the hospital and a mental patient comes pushing a door open which hits her badly in the stomach, it causes the fetus to uhhh die so they had to do an abortion on it…..well Jesus that got dark, anyways so the wife divorces him oh and he gets diagnosed with cancer and might have few years to live….oh awesome…things are definitely going poorly for Mr. Kramer, anyways so he decides to try to commit suicide by uhh driving himself and his car off a cliff but he surprisingly survives somehow even with a shard piercing out of his chest….

So what does he do with this new fond respect he has for uhhhh surviving death? Does he

A. Go on vacation

B. Go find another woman to hook up with

C. Go find Jesus

D. Start creating death traps that can only be escaped from if u mutilate urself or sacrifice a friend or a college, then go out and kidnap people using men wearing pig mask, also these people have to deserve to be put through the torture to immense for there mistakes

If yall picked D then u r 100% correct and probably insane…..and if yall guessed C then the hell is wrong with u? What do u think this film is? Scoffs, anyways so yeah thats what he decides to do with his newfound resurrection….putting people through literal hell using traps he makes, oh btw before that happens he gets revenge on the guy who caused his wife the abortion….he found the guy and let him fall into a pile of barb wires, he set up……ouch that’s definitely a way to go out….

So now time for me to talk about some of the traps that have unfortunately stuck in my head way too vividly……everyone remembers the reverse bear trap uhhh trap lolo…..it’s a trap that covers the person’s mouth and the woman who was underneath had to dig a key out from a corpse to let herself out, yes she makes it out with some scars around her mouth and maybe some trauma…but then she goes on and becomes John Krames apprentice, oh dont worry this only is the first out of like 5 apprentices he will end up having which may or may not retcon moments from previous moments…….also I remember 1 brutal trap kill the most and that’s it……it’s of a guy with a trap with hooks attached to his ribs ohhh God and he’s tied to a table that’s upwards anyways unfortunately he doesn’t make it out and the trap rips open his rib cage…..yeah I think I wanna go bleach my eyes out now….

So moving on from talking about the kills so we don’t get too gory, let’s talk about the most famous ending which is the ending of the first movie…to give context in the first movie there’s 2 men who wake up in a run down bathroom in some ice cold bathtub oh and they’re chained to separate sides of the walls, there’s a tape recorder in the middle of the floor with a dead body with his brains blown out so the body has a gun….so they get to the tape recorder turn it on which a voice says hello I wanna play a game……anyways they gotta figure a way out or else they die…

Anyways while that happens the cops are going after the Jigsaw killer…they believe the killer to be this guy named Mr. Zep because he starts kidding people and killing them at point shot range with a hand gun…..so does that mean they have there guy right? Wellllllll so anyways they eventually catch up to him and kill the guy…….so is that game over then? They can now rescue the 2 locked up people? Wellllll

So back at those 2 locked up people one of them takes a Saw and chops off his own leg, oh jesus Christ ahhhh…and he crawls away to go get some help…..anyways the second man goes to Zeps body where he finds a tape recorder in his pocket…where he turns it on and the truth comes out so turns out Mr. Zep isn’t the murderer nope he was an innocent bystander…he worked at the hospital and somehow the Jigsaw killer injected him with poison, told him over a call he has to play by his rules by killing Ms. Gordon or else he dies, it’s the rules……ohhhhhhhhhhhhh also btw here’s the clip of the ending of this film

So Mr. Zep isn’t the killer then who is? Well glad yall asked because then the body in the middle of the floor starts getting up and stretches….yeah turns out the dead body isn’t a dead body nor was it a victim no he is the Jigsaw killer his name is John Kramer….anyways he sits up peels off the fake blood off his head and points to the bathtub and says the key to the chain is in there…..ohhhhhhhhh yeah the realization comes to our guy when he realizes when he woke up in the tub his tow accidentally yanked on the drain so the key went down the drain…..ohhh jeez, so then the guy grabs the gun, and tries to shoot Mr. Kramer….then Kramer pulls out a remote and electrocutes the guy….

Then we get a voice-over of Kramer while he’s turning out the lights and walking slowly to the door, I’m sick and tired of people who don’t have a respect for life….most people are so ungrateful to be alive, but not u…..not anymore……then ohhh the final shot of our guy on the floor reaching his hand out and screaming ahhhhhhhh!!!!! In fear.. while Kramer closes the door and says Game Over!……AHHHHHHHHHHHH!……ohhhhhh that iconic scene is so eerie, that’s how horror movies should end….on a negative note or a bittersweet note….not a happy note like a lot of horror movies do these days…….why can’t more horror movies end on a sad note anymore? Guess not….

Anyways wanna know when I think this Saw Franchise should have ended? By the end of the 3rd movie because guess what? Kramer dies at the end of 3….he’s on deaths bed, and his brain cancer has gotten worse….so for the entire of the 3rd movie he’s being taken care of by the woman he made his appearance…anyways he does become suspicious of her though he finds out his apprentice has been making the traps un escapable…….which is a no-no for him because he is about being fare making his games have a way to escape from there traps…..as long they get a new respect for life, but his apprentice is just a psychopath who wants to murder people because she’s insane……

So he has her killed and he then gets killed, now yall would think that should be the end right? Yeah nah instead we get 6 more movies soon to be 7….Jesus so what exactly do these 6 movies add to the table? Well, really nothing new….every other film just introduces us to a new apprentice of John Kramer….such as the guy who chopped off his leg in the first film, and really all the films are just the freaking same….it’s ohh the apprentices don’t fully understand John Kramers tactics and just prefer killing people so they make the traps not possible to escape from….and then in somehow or some way the new apprentice dies, and so on and so on….yeah thats this franchise in a nutshell it really is just Gore-Porn the movie series…..they’re basically just seeing ohh how far can we push the amount of gore until the audience is grossed out….

For example some Saw traps include

Woman’s jaw and face being ripped open by a reverse bear trap

A guy’s ribcage being ripped out of him

A cops head being smashed in bu 2 blocks of ice attached to metal rods that are dangling on each side of the guy

2 captives having to cut off pounds of flesh to be able to escape

Ect ect stuff like that….and don’t worry they only get worse ans more detailed from there

I’ll say this I didn’t hate Saw 4 5 and 6 and 7, I actually liked the character of Detective Hoffman…..I thought he was a pretty good replacement for John Kramer, ro bad they ruined his character in Saw 7 or as its called Saw 3D….they basically just turned him into the Terminator by going around stabbing people…..popping out of places with a knife stabbing people….oh wonderful, but then he gets killed off by Dr. Gordon at the end of Saw 3D, to bad these apprentices that keep coming up go literally nowhere because when a Saw movie fails the company says wait that failed? Ok let’s do a spinoff…wait that failed? OK let’s go all the way back bring back Mr. Kramer go back to the roots of the earlier series….also Hoffman kills off John Kramers ex wife because she tried to kill Hoffman in Saw 6, wow I’m so no intrigued by this at all….can we move on

So yes this is the 7th installment in this franchise where once again we get to see John Kramer in back flash scenes, I swear to God it seems like someone over at LionsGate regrets killing off John Kramer so early, to the point they’re trying to bring him back as many times as possible through flashbacks and voice recordings….anyways in this film after a body is discovered hanging from the neck under a bridge the cops find out in an autopsy that the corpse has the iconic Jigsaw shape of flesh cut out of the corpse’s leg oh and they found some of John Kramers blood under the corpses fingers….it gets cops wondering how is this happening? John Kramer Is dead, how’s the Jigsaw crimes all a sudden back and is he still alive? Because his blood was found under the corpses fingers….anyways while that happens we also see our main group of victims kidnapped who wake up with a bucket on there heads and a chain around the neck dragging them into a saw….they escape though except for one who was still unconscious, turns out the way to escape from the trap was letting the blade make contact with ur back attracting some blood…uh ew

Anyways so our detective main character is on the case along with the help of a guy who works in the morgue at the cop place….maybe they will figure out what is going on, except let’s forget that for now and go back to our kidnapped individuals, so they’re trying to figure out how the hell are they going to get out of the traps there in….unfortunately for them they individually get put through there own traps, heck one of them gets tied upside-down in the middle of a rotating sharp metal spiral that’s rapidly spinning, he ends up getting sliced into pieces by the trap…..oh good grief, anyways so wanna know how this film ends? Well with a plot twist…..no I wish that I was kidding,

So the plot twist happens when our detective and biopsy guy wakes up in a room with a metal neck brace around their necks with lasers around the neck brace and if it touches their heads it will split their heads open….ewww, the only way to save themselves is by admitting they’re sins….so anyways the detective guy tries saving his own self…and let the autopsy guy Logan die, wow what a prick….so the lasers turn off for the detective but the lasers around Logans head slices into him…..now u would think that be the end of it, but nope…because Logan gets up and reveals that he’s been behind this the entire time…that turns out those 5 people that we saw in the game actually died 10 years ago during a game that John Kramer set up, the bodies were never found because well they died and their bodies have been there ever since…

So he recreated those 5 people’s death to distract the cops….get them off guard, to make it look like the murders are happening in the present time, but they aren’t….also if ur wondering why Logan is doing any of this? Well 10 years ago he was one of those 5 people in the trap but since he was still unconscious and didn’t wake up in time, then got sliced in the back by the saws….Mr. Kramer decided to save him, and give him another chance….so he brought him under his wing they made traps together and all that….ok I am gonna call bullshite right here, so let me get this straight so uh John Kramer has like what 6 to 8 months to live because of his brain cancer, and in that time….yall trying to tell me that he was able to create a doll, use an abandoned wear house, make traps, kidnapped people, put them through the games, train up to 5 apprentices? And now in Saw X….go to Mexico to try to get cured but doesn’t and instead they trick him so he kidnaps them and has them go through a game oh yeah and make these pig masks, with long black hair and black red robes for his men to go around and kidnap people he wants them to kidnap?…..yeah bullshite!!

Also, where’s been this Logan guy? He’d never been brought up before…..anyways so uh Logan is upset with detective guy because he let a murderer named Edger get away because he was protecting him…even though he killed Logans wife…..ahhhh now we get to the roots of the problem, he’s vengeful against the cops because especially this detective because he let his wife’s murderer go…btw his wife’s murderer was technically the first Jigsaw victim that started this investigation to begin in this movie…..anyways uh here’s the clip for the ending of the movie..

So then he says I now speak for the people who people like u, and rapists hurt……then he activates the lasers to slice into the detective’s head….yeah he didn’t give the detective a chance to live, just a chance to scream or don’t scream…..damn well that’s definitely not the John Kramer way, he always gave his victims a chance to live or not….so the guys head splits open into like a flower, eww then he falls onto the ground…so then Logan says I speak for the dead then he closes the big metal door…similar to John Kramer doing same thing at end of the first movie although he said game over……yeah honestly Logan should have said game over….not I speak for the dead, well that was extremely underwhelming in my opinion….did I hate this movie? No, there’s far worse movies I’ve seen….

Then afterwards we got our 9th installment named Spiral From The Book Of Saw…..this film was created by Chris Brown….yeah that comedian Chris Brown, but he respected the source material so he didn’t make this film into a comedy…heck even during filming the director kept saying this is a Chris Rock film which Chris says no this is a Saw film….hey I mean good on him, also heres the trailer….

So I won’t talk much about this movie instead I’ll give the brush marks of this film besides these films are all the same ar this point….so in this film our main detective guy named Zeke Banks (played by Chris Brown) has a father named Marcus Banks (played by Samual L Jackson) who he’s not seen In a while, btw his dad is an officer just like him….so anyways one day his dad goes missing, and this tape recorder shows up to the police station…..all after they found a dead body in a railroad station…..take a guess what he was doing down there? Easy he was chained and his tongue attached to a mechanism that is attached to the ceiling he has the option to let his tongue get ripped off and escape or let the train hit him….he ended up letting both happen to him. He was too slow….

Anyways so the plot kicks in as soon as the cops get a tape and u would think it’s the Jigsaw killer? Nope instead it’s a new voice that doesn’t sound as intimidating….kinda sounds like the Riddler from the batman 2022, and he has a new puppet which is a pig puppet wearing an army uniform……well, I guess this came full circle, the Jigsaw killer had pig men henchmen on his team and now this new copycat killer has a new puppet that’s a pig…….yeah I ain’t digging it….

So then Zeke and this cop rookie named William team up to find Zeke’s dad and find this new Jigsaw copycat…..so anyways if yall are wondering how this film ends? Well glad yall asked, for u see Zeke ends up finding his dad in a bundling hooked up or wired up to a mechanism that’s hanging him over a pit, the wires are covering his limbs and stomach….it’s some kind of mechanism, what is it exactly? We’ll we will find out soon…..but for now guess what? We finally find out who the killer is, its the detectives partner in crime dunn dunn dunn….

Here’s why he’s been going around recreating the Jigsaw games, it’s because he wants to punish corrupt cops, yep thats his motivation because his dad died….hmmmmm great I guess, and he gives Zeke an option either save his dad, and join his cause or try to take him down and let Zeke’s dad die, his choice….ohhhhhh so that’s the choice then….what a terrible choice if u ask me

Anyway so Zeke picks the try to save his dad and chase the criminal….so what ends up happening is he had a failsafe in case Zeke has chosen poorly, for you see the cops come running in….then our bad guy activates a switch that pulls out a shotgun out of the mechanism that Zeke’s dad is bound in and it starts shooting the cops….so they shoot Zeke’s dad till he dies because they think he’s the killer……anyways Willam gets away by the elevator while Zeke is left screaming and pointing at Willam for the cops to get him….that’s how the film ends….

Honestly here’s my final stance on this film series it really should have stopped at 3, because that’s when John Kramer died, heck I’d say it should have stopped at 2 because the first 2 are great…the 3rd movie not so much, John doesn’t do much except for laying on a medical table vomiting and coughing….awesome oh joy 😑….also the Saw movies after that just go downhill I mean u the film series trying to tell me that John Kramer had enough time to apprentice 5 different people u kidnapped and changed there lives? For either good or bad? Bullshite…

Yeah this series liked to do retcons by adding in some other apprentice that wasn’t ever mentioned before or someone who hasn’t been brought up since Saw 1…..it gets all convaludicated….it becomes a mess, we also got Saw 3D, huh they really were obsessed with 3D at that time huh? Because if memory serves me right we also had Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D shortly before or after that film….seriously what was with the hype of 3D in that decade?

Also, bless Chris Brown’s heart he really tried he really really tried to do something slightly different with Spiral by adding comedy in it…but it just doesn’t fully work, now don’t get me wrong I didn’t hate Spiral but I didn’t love it either……I just found it passable…..and now with Saw X coming out taking things back to the roots of the series what made it so popular…I wonder where they will go forward with after Saw X which is taking 9 steps backward…no I wish I was kidding but Saw X is taking place in the time line after Saw 1…huh talk about even more confusion now here’s the timeline according to Saw X

Why even call it Saw X? Why not Saw 1 and a half….so overall I’ll give the Saw Franchise a solid ehhh 3.8/10….it’s just not for me, I understand the appeal I do but I’m just like this really should have ended at Saw 2 at best….Saw 3 at worst…but everything that came after those were just pointless and unnecessary….anyways hope yall enjoy this review
