Oppenheimer: before we start let’s show yall the trailers shall we?

Since this is a Universal film, Y’all know what that means? Cue the Universal Logo!

So before we get into this review I wanna mention some stuff first….I completely understand that this movie isn’t gonna be for everyone…trust me when I say this, this film isn’t meant for kids nor is it meant for people who want action and fighting in their movies nor is this a movie for people who have a short attention span…..but me saying that I gotta say I absolutely loved this movie…..it’s really great, even if yall don’t like slow bio pick movies I still recommend watching this movie once….just once, so without further a due let’s get into the review shall we?

So in this movie we start off with Oppenheimer played by Cillian Murphy who’s now older, and he’s being questioned by the government in a small room……yeah thats how the film starts…

Also he’s being questioned by a board room and one of them is named Roger Robb (played byJason Clarke) he is questioning Oppenheimer

So then J. Robert Oppenheimer starts talking about his past how he went to a college to learn about physics….yada yada yada and all that, one day he tried poisoning his own teacher by injecting poison into an apple that was left on his teachers desk…..uh oh, but don’t worry the next day he feels regret and heads back to the room to try to grab the apple before his teacher can eat it, as soon as he gets there….there’s another guy there professor dude named Niels Bohr played by Kenneth Branagh……he grabs the apple but Oppenheimer tries to get it out of his hands, which he does…

Anyway Niels tells him he saw him at his lecture last night and he was the only one to ask the worth wild question…..then he says with that smart of a mind and if u feel unappreciated here u should leave go to Germany (I think that’s where he said) study there bring ur mind there…..so he does go and learn all about quantum physics…..also he teaches a class one day on quantum physics and here we get introduced to an American named Isidor Isaac Rabi (played by David Krumholtz) So enters the room where he tells the next guy over he knows American, id he needs help he can teach him American but then Oppenheimer starts speaking entirely in German during the whole class…

Fun fact so behind the scenes Cillian Murphy was asked by his Co stars if he wanted to go out to dinner with them? Which he said can’t I have 1 night to learn 30 thousand words of German…..yeah yikes 1 night to learn 30k words of German? I mean good on him but double yikes

Anyway, we cut to another court room like a main court room….and this entire scene is in black and white….anyways a guy namedLewis Strauss (played by Robert Downey Jr) and his senate aid played by Alden Ehrenreich go into thr court room…the goverment is asking him questions, about J Robert Oppenheimer……

Also a senator named Senator Gale W. McGee (played by Harry Groener) he is mainly asking the questions to Lewis Strauss…..he may not be on trial but oh don’t worry he will be technically…

Anyways, Strauss tells them he joined his university, where he tells Oppenheimer that he has a home ready for him and how wife and 2 kids….he welcomes Oppenheimer and shows him to his office…..they both see Albert Einstein (played by Tom Canti) standing outside near the pond where Oppenheimer goes outside and talks to him….while that happens Strauss himself gets curious on what they are talking about because he can’t hear them…so he walks up to them and Einstein starts walking away in silent and he asks Oppenheimer what was that about? Which Oppenheimer says there are things u need to know about My past to be weary of it….which Strauss said we’ve read ur files already I already know……Oppenheimer walks away and says I’m considering it about if I saty or not…

If yall are wondering where this specific back flash takes place in? Well after the Manhattan project…..because in this scene Mr. Strauss says to Oppenheimer I never understood why u didn’t ask for Albert Einstein to help on the Manhattan project…which Oppenheimer basically says he didn’t want to join…..yeah I don’t blame him either…

So now going back quite a bit we see Oppenheimer meet a scientist named Mr. Eisenberg, who he looks up…..he tells him he’s going back to America because 1. He misses it there and 2. He’s gonna be teaching quantum physics there which is something no one in America is dreaming or thought of…..so he wants to be a physics pioneer….so he goes back to America, starts teaching a classroom of 1 person st the start because in his words to the next door room teacher who’s name is Ernest Lawrence (played by Josh Hartnett), he tells him that all it takes is to start with 1 person then when others hear about it there’s no going back…

So Oppenheimer builds up a good amount of people who join his lectures and all that……so anyways one night him and Eenest Lawrence go to a get-together party were he sees brother there named Frank Oppenheimer (played by Dylan Arnold) along with his wife named Jackie, anyways inside they meet a guy named Haakon Chevalier (played by Jefferson Hall) were they both talk about things, Oppenheimer meantions he is teaching both quantum physics and something else, its what happens if a star explodes….which he is asked what happens? Which he says idk? Theory only takes u so far….anyways he meets a waitress named Jean Tatlock (played by Florance Pugh), they both end up hooking up together and when I mean hooking up i mean hooking up like full on nudity sex in bed…

She then goes over to his bookshelf to grab a book where she asks him to read from that page and he does…he reads “and now I’ve become death, the destroyer of worlds” ooooohhh fan service I smell fan service…..anyways so uhh if ur wondering how this relationship goes? Well she keeps calling and he comes and he brings her flowers but she doesn’t want him to…so she always tosses them away…yeah she’s a mentally troubled person……so eventually he meets a woman named Kitty (played by Emily Blunt) They end up getting married also she’s an alcoholic yada yada they have a kid uh oh…..so with the wife being an alcoholic and the dad being out all day and busy he decides to take his new born child and drop him off at his friends house Haakon Chevalier house to br precise…he says he will keep and eye on there kid, how thoughtful….

So anyways the goverment brings Oppenheimer on the Manhattan project if he keeps his left wing politics behind…..he agrees and a general dude named Leslie Groves (played by Matt Damon) along with Kenneth Nichols (played by Dane DeHaan) he hands Kenneth his coat and says iron that for me…so then he sits down and basically tells Oppenheimer he came because he was curious about the guy who brought quantum physics to America….so then Oppenheimer shows on the board he has a plan, the plan Is to recruit 9 of the most famous scientists gather them in one area until the bombs made…make a small town out in the middle of nowhere, where they can test there bomb once made…..thr general agrees to this….

Oppenheimer picks Jornada del Muerto desert as the place to build the small town and build the bomb……so then both Oppenheimer and General Matt Damon go recruit more scientists, they recruit up to 7 scientists…these including

Vannevar Bush (played by Matthew Modine)

Richard Feynman (played by Jack Quaid)

Kenneth Bainbridge (played by Josh Peck)

Robert Serber (played by Michael Angarano)

Hans Bethe (played by Gustaf Skarsgård)

Edward Teller (played by Benny Safdie)

So they recruit them, and although some reluctantly join, they start to come up with ideas on how to build the bomb and how to test it….they but one day Edward Teller comes in with some information he discovered….turns out he put this through some calculations but turns out there’s a big chance that setting off the bomb will destroy the world….dun dun dunn, so Oppenheimer conceives in Albert Einstein about this so he goes and finds Albert walking in the woods, he asks him for some advice….he hands him the paper and Albert asks who’s is this? Which he says Edward Tellers……then Oppenheimer says can u run the calculations to see if this is correct? Which Albert says uh no this ain’t mine to do….

They do however both agree that in there own words “if u (or i) launch the atomic bomb, we might start a chain reaction that will end the earth” yeah thats a horrifying thought to think off….he then asks Albert how do I confirm this? Which Albert says do the test and u will find out…which Oppenheimer says and what if the solution ends up being catastrophic? Then Albert says then stop it, and write down ur conclusive findings…..so uh yeah there’s a chance the world might end….but this doesn’t stop him from building it….

So him and the scientists get to work, yada yada it ends up taking months and months and months then comes Christmas where Geneal Matt Damon gives them a Christmas present he brings to them, Niels Bohr, which they all clap……they all have a fun nice conversation time then Oppenheimer takes him to the thinking room to get his opinion on the project….

Niels Bohr checks out 2 glass bowls on the table 1 big bowl and one small bowl, there filled with marbles, reason they are filled with marbels is because it was used to determine how much uranium they will need to use…..there is that fun fact for the day….


So anyways they then say with ur help now we can do this much faster but then Niels Bohr says can I talk to u alone for a second then the other people leave the room then he tells Oppenheimer I’m not here to help on the project…he is then asked then what u doing here? Which he says I’m just here to tell u that ur the man who gave them the weapon to destroy themselves and the world isn’t prepared for it….u do ur work here, I’ll try my best our there to convince the people to not to panic, that this isn’t a weapon but it instead is a new beginning……

Anyway Oppenheimer assistant phone lady comes in and says there’s a call for u….it’s from New York, so if ur wondering what the call was well, for u see that other girl he had sex with well she was found dead in her apartment she was found drowned in the bathtub, no one knows if she committed suicide or if she was forcefully killed……it’s left open ended for the audience to determine….anyways he goes rides away breaks down into tears and his wife Emily Blunt finds him curled up in the forest all upset he tells her what happen then she slaps him and says u cannot do the sin then think u will get sympathy…pull urself together u have to….

So back to the project they are getting closer and closer they’ve been testing the blast radius by using 1 single bomb shell around the atom bomb to test the radius…..anyways Oppenheimer visits an underground test chamber where he is asked if he wants to see there findings, we’re a scientist guy named Dr. David Hill (played by Rami Malek) comes up hands him the board which Oppenheimer knocks it out of his hands and says I don’t want to get into that stuff…….lolo

Anyways back at the town general Matt Damon says to Oppenheimer were going to go meet the US congress we need to give them an answer on when we will have the bomb ready…..when they get there on the way out to the car, Oppenheimer bumps into those 2 scientists yes Dr. David Hill they are they’re to warn Oppenheimer that he should be weary, and then Dr. David tries handing the board again to Oppenheimer but he pushes it away and says no enough…..lolo

Anyways so then he joins General Matt Damon in the car they get to the congress building where they have a chat with the generals and all that, they are discussing about what places they should and shouldn’t bomb when the bomb is ready…..one of them marks off an area in Japan to not be bombed because and I quote me and my wife go there for vacation…..wow what a bunch of pricks, willing to decide on which city gets mass genocide but which ones get to stay due to being a vacation spot…..sighhh

Anyway the General Matt Damon guy says well have the bomb ready by July 12th, so there now they have to finish it by July 12th jeepers….but if yall are wondering how long it has been that they’ve worked on this project? Well it’s taken get this 3 years yes 3 God damn years……Jesus and they spent over 2 billion dollars on this project which is over the budget they gave them at first….so yeah all this is hindering on Oppenheimer bomb to work….oh btw if ur wonder who they yall are gonna nuke? Well Japan…reason? Because they are at war with them….now bet yall wondering wait Jarrod I thought u said they were at war with the Nazis hence why this bomb was created? Well the Nazi war has ended world war 2 was finished, Hitler has died….now onto the next war

So back to the finishing the project so they’re getting close but now he asks the General to let his brother come and help because his brother is now no longer a communism and he has heavy knowledge to help with what they’re doing……

Anyways Oppenheimer joins a dinner meeting with group of people and Strauss where he asks Oppenheimer Truman needs to know what’s next……yada yada and all that, anyways during this conversation he brings up this writer named Willam L. Borden (played by David Dastmalchian) yeah how many A list actors did they get for this movie? No seriously? Anyways so the group has an argument yada yada what’s new……anyways back to the test sight, so they bring Oppenheimer brother to come help them out……they continue the tests then the general guy tells Oppenheimer brother were testing the bomb on July 12th, which is soon so they better be ready….

Anyways so they finalize the bomb by inserting in the atom core, which they have to be careful or else kaboom……so then they put the bomb into a black canister type thing, have it lifted up on top of the watch tower, when it gets to the top they tear the tape off the sides of the bomb and put in small tunes and wires…..Jesus this is starting to get tense….anyways the day comes which his wife can tell because he walks up to her and she says it’s happening now isn’t it? Then he heads to the bomb site…where it’s very windy which means rain soon, so he climbs up the ladder up to the bomb, then he looks at the bomb….then heads back down into the tent

Because it’s starting to rain, uh oh So now they have to wait it out….luckily Oppenheimer knows the area he says the storm will pass by in few hours I know this place…..so anyways they wait and wait, then the time comes. The storm settles down a bit so they go to the bunker….Josh Pecks character comes in turns on the machines with a key, pushes some buttons…..his role is to push the button to abort the mission if the bomb doesn’t go off…..so everyone gets in there positions, the military people get on the ground and lay down holding paper in front of there eyes to block the light from hurting there eyes, the other people are sitting from far distance enjoying the site wearing glasses all while Edward Teller is putting on tons of sunscreen….lolo

Anyways so now the timer starts counting down……and Josh Peck’s character says “Detonator charged”……then they all put their goggles on to watch the explosion happen……it is now or never, if this fails then the last 3 years and 2 billion dollars would have been for nothing…..so anyways the bomb drops after 3 2 1…then it explodes kaboom….btw I love this cinematography because we don’t hear the explosion all we hear is the breathing of the humans around it….it’s silent at first which is probably how a real nuke would sound like at first….it be silent and all u will hear is the sound of ur own breathing…….anyways then Oppenheimer says “now I’ve become death the destroyer of worlds” once again fan service…

Anyways so then we hear the shock wave of the explosion so a small jump scare if u will, hurray the explosion was a success yayyyy…..so everyone the next day starts celebrating Oppenheimer because the bomb was a success, woo-hoo….well it’s good they’re celebrating now because the day after the military come in and take the bombs away, they tell Oppenheimer with all due respect we got it from here….so they take away the bombs…..so uh yes they made Oppenheimer make the bomb then they pat him on the shoulder and take the bombs away, yep seems like something the government would do…

Anyways General Matt Damon leaves and Oppenheimer asks him to keep him posted which he says I will, to my best that I can….anyways in the days to come they hear on the radio that America has bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki….yeah we don’t get to see the bombing of both cities we just get to hear about it…which makes sense because Oppenheimer never saw the bombing happen all he did was hear about it over a radio…..anyways so this leads him down a path of depression because he starts feeling regret, especially later when he and the others are shown footage of the affect the bomb did on the civilians in both cities, either the people were burned instantly and died or burned instantly and survived painfully….oh God

So anyways Oppenheimer goes to tell a speech to the group of people who where staying at the small town he made….all them are cheering for Oppenheimer so he goes out there and says “today will be remembered” “I wish we made the bomb in time so we could use it on the Nazis” btw while he’s saying this we see the background shaking except for him this is supposed to show us hea having trouble believing what he’s saying, that he’s feeling guilt….and all that, anyways then a bright light flashes btw this is all in his mind, so he then starts seeing the skin tearing off the people which then he sees himself stepping in a dead burnt corpse yikes…

Luckily he wakes up from this hallucination still In the room with everyone clapping and cheering him on….he then walks outside notices some people crying then he notices a guy vomiting, uh oh maybe radiation poisoning….Anyways so he goes and has a meeting with president Truman who’s played by Gary Oldman….anyways he enters the room he is told by Truman nice magazine, it has ur face on it…..then Oppenheimer says to Nixon I have blood on my hands, the bombing of both cities has got to me…..which then Truman pulls a tissue out and he says u think they will care or think of u? No they will be thinking of me…I ordered the bombings…..then Oppenheimer leaves and as soon as he leaves uh Nixon says don’t allow that cry baby back here again…..wow what a prick Harry S. Truman was….

Anyways so to wrap up the rest of the movie, uh his friend Edward Teller comes in the kangaroo senate room and testifies against Oppenheimer because he’s just a slimy friend……. heck even Oppenheimer wife Kitty is upset at Edward and even more upset that Oppenheimer ends up shaking his hand afterwards….anyways next person to be questioned is Kitty Oppenheimer….she’s questioned about her past as a communist and well Roger Robb tries handing her a card that shows how long she’s been a communism because she says it’s been a long time I’ve forgotten….then he tries forcing the card to her then she says I’m no longer a communist it’s been years I’ve forgotten…it’s been what 6…..7 years I don’t care….ohhhhhh burn

Anyways so with the help of his lawyer and hiw wife, guess how this case ends? Easy in fact it’s barley an inconvenience….lolo for u see this was a kangaroo senate room court so they already had there answer planned in advance….this whole thing was just to humiliate Oppenheimer, in fact this whole court hearing thing was operated by Strauss….yeah dun dun dunn turns out even his senate aid figures it out because he reads a few sentences in a magazine that was just published about Strauss and it said every sentence Strauss said in his court hearing…..so he put 2 and 2 together that Strauss was the one who leaked Oppenheimer files to the news guy to then give it to the courts…he set this entire thing up dun dunn dunnn

So the reason he set this up is because get this he believes that Oppenheimer and Einstein were saying something bad about him behind his back at the lake, because Strauss is an egotistical man who only hates it if anyone talks bad about him….he’s also upset that Oppenheimer made fun of him at one of the previous courts they use to attend……oh and he tricked Oppenheimer to think he’s well s friend of his….yep makes sense why Oppenheimer thought Strauss was a great friend because Oppenheimer is a scientist, not a politician while Strauss is a politician….he’s been pretending to be Oppenheimer friend but in reality, he’s been secretly stabbing him in the back….dun dunn dunnnn, so now his own senate aid is fed up with Strauss because he’s been lying to him….wow what a shocker.

So then they go back out there in hoping that the Dr guy whoa coming will help him and guess who the guy is? It’s Rami Maleks character…I forget his name….he speaks finally…wow yeah finally and his first words ah yes thank u…and guess what else? He testifies against Strauss he points out Strauss framed Oppenheimer set up the whole kangaroo court just out of spite against Oppenheimer….he doesn’t want Strauss to get his way….no he wants Strauss to get his just desserts….hurray he deserves it.

Anyway if yall are wondering what verdict Oppenheimer gets well it ain’t great news, for u see they take away his license to be a scientist, oh and they lable him a communist as well because he disagrees with there ways….but he can still teach at school but that’s it…wow so uh America asked him to make them a bomb, he did that and the thanks he gets is uh banning him from being a scientist? Yep this sounds like America….ur expendable, they need u until they don’t….this film doesn’t portray the government as good people which is good because they are not…..so good on u film for painting the government in a bad light…showing us all how corrupt and greedy they can be….

Anyways so yeah Oppenheimer is screwed over and so is Strauss, the only difference is Strauss deserved to be screwed over….oh btw Strauss after the hearing finds out by his senate aid that someone came at the last minister to vote against Strauss…he asks who was it? Which the senate aid days uh John F Kennedy……ohhhhhhhhhhhh yayyyyy JFK, awesome…….woo-hoo the next president basically…..so he votes Strauss out of being able to get his spot in the council, yayyyy…..I do like how the Senate Aid talks back at Strauss, he says to the aid I thought u said I would win? And the Senate Aid said yeah and why wasn’t I given the entire picture…..ohhhhhhhhhhh

Then Strauss says Oppenheimer should be thanking me, I gave him what he wanted…I gave him the fame, he should be thanking me…..if he could do this over again he would….he ruined my life it all started when him and Albert were talking bad about me at the lake!!….which then his senate aid says in all fairness we don’t know what they were talking about….then he starts opening the door then he says for all u know they were talking about something more important then u……ohhhhhhhhh, so then they walk out of the room…

Oh Oppenheimer down the line when he gets older which yes we get to see him older. Damn the makeup here is so amazing, he looks exactly like J Robert Oppenheimer….anyways he gets an award from the senate and his friend comes up to shake his hand which he shakes it but he then tries shaking Kitty’s hands and she refuses and gives him a stare…..ohhhhhhhhh!!…

So the final scene of the movie has us going back to that specific part where Oppenheimer and Albert Einstein were talking to each other at the lake….bow we finally get to hear what they were talking about…what Strauss thought was them talking bad about him….turns out they weren’t saying anything bad about him…in fact they were talking about how Oppenheimer feels guilt over the bombing of the 2 cities…then as Albert Einstein walked away Oppenheimer says..

Oppenheimer: remember that paper I gave u that had the calculations on it saying if we might start a chain reaction?

Albert Einstein: I remember it all to well, why u ask?

Oppenheimer: I think we broke the chain

Dun dunn dun then the final shot of this movie is of Oppenheimer staring at the distance while he gets a vision of himself flying in a plane about to bomb a city and he visions a future of nuclear missiles shooting off at one another…the final shot of the movie is of Oppenheimer crossing his eyes and opening it while breathing heavily then the movie fades to black and the title of the film appears……

So overall how do I put it this way, I actually loved this movie, but I can see why people wouldn’t want to see this movie as much as Barbie….mainly because who’s more often gonna go watch Barbie over a 3 hour slow burner bio pick of the guy who made the nuclear bomb? Which might be a touchy subject for alot of people…..anyways I’ll give this movie a solid 9/10….anyways I had a fun time reviewing this movie I hope yall enjoy the read…..
