Lights Out:


Ok so let’s start off with mentioning that if yall didn’t know but this film is based off of a horror short on YouTube……in fact the guy who made that horror short directed this film……that to me is what got me intrigued in this film…..anyways I wanna show yall the horror short in case u haven’t seen it……fair warning it’s scary AF,

Yeah so I’m case any yall didn’t click on that let me give yall a rundown of it so in that short a woman is about to go to bed so she’s shutting the lights off anyways as she turns off the hallway lights she sees a random figure standing in the hallway so she turns the lights on, the figure vanishes then she turns it off the figure reappears…..turns the lights back on then vanishes….then turns it back off and reappears….then turns the lights back on vanishes and this time when she turns the lights back off the figure has teleported right in front of her…so she turns the lights back on….leaves it on goes into her room and leaves the lamp on, and she starts hearing creaking noises so she puts the blanket over her head and hides under the covers……but as soon as she doesn’t hear the creaking anymore she comes out of the covers and smirks but then she looks over at her lamp and sees this naked woman creature with pale white eyes sitting near her lamp, it makes a creepy grunt noise then turns the light off……yeah tbis short gave alot of people nightmares…me including, so now ur wondering wait how do they make this short into a 1 hour and 40ish min film? Well I mean good point how do they? Well glad yall asked…before I get any further here’s the trailers

I do like the way this film opens up with something very similar to the horror short…..instead of it being a house we instead have the same female actress from the short but this time she’s working in a warehouse with a college and there about to shut down for the night…..as the woman turns off the last lights in a room she notices the figure standing in front of her….and we know the formula by no…lights on lifhts off lights on lights off lights on lights off …..bammb creature jumps in front of her…..wait what? Yeah this film takes liberties…..instead of having a creature we barley see move but instead teleport during the time u turn the light off then back on…..we instead now have a creature that even with the lights off u will see it jump or dash towards u……which in my opinion I think that takes some of the creep factor away…….so to no ones shocker they both get killed off……and this is kinda where any Correlations with the horror short ends…..because the rest of this film just makes up its own plot….


To give a summary the rest of this film is about a woman who is having to take care of her son….oh joy ones of those generic horror films…..anyways her son starts seeing this creature appearing in the dark in there house so he tells his mom has a really weird response, she says that creature is a ghost of a friend my mother made at the mental hospital when she was younger……this girl she met had a skin disorder where she burns if the sunlight shines on her……and this brings up my first issue with this film the fact that they give this creature a reason for why she only appears in the dark…..I’m not a fan of the fact they have a reason why she stays in the dark, what I liked about this unknown creature in the short is that we didn’t know why she is only visible in the dark which makes her scarier in my opinion, the lack of knowing……but instead nope we just have to had been given a reason I guess…


Anyway so apparently this girl named Diana btw died in the hospital because they put her through intense light therapy, ouch…….and now she probably has a Vengeance out for anyone I guess? Look idk it doesn’t make sense I know…….anyways so throughout this film they both see the creature only appear in the dark, so they have to try to stop it………because that or let the creature kill them, you know the only 2 options for them to do……btw I forgot to mention that they find out that Diana was cruel and manipulative, she forced her way into our main characters mothers life when they whwre kids at the hospital…..jeepers such a nice friend huh?


So anyways near the end of this film our main female character, her boyfriend and her son try to stop Diana together in their house of course…….if ur wondering how she plans to well glad u ask she gets a UV light…….ok cool, thinking that will hurt her….but turns out for some reason Diana is immune to UV light I guess, because she goes into the basement finds words on the wall which yes is written in blod and she finds mannequins…..one of which turns out to be Diana and no she doesn’t vanish because as a Saif UV lights she’s fine with….btw here for the first time we see what Diana looks like and I’m not a fan of the change they made…..where in the original short whe was this naked woman with pale eyes, making grunting noises oh and also only teleports while in the dark….in this film she’s abnormally taller then our main characters, she has burn marks all over her bod, has long fingers….not finger nails but fingers, ok that’s cartoonish, oh and she has pale eyes……which is about the only similarities to the short she has because everything else I’ve just described aren’t in the short….oh and she has sharp teeth in this film for some reason, well where just pulling from everything that qualifies to be scary and dumping into one character design huh?


Then the cops show up because her boyfriend calls the cops and of course the cops don’t believe them that there’s a ghost but they go inside anyways….where they do encounter the ghost, they try shooting her but u know she’s a ghost she can teleport so that doesn’t go great…..so then Diana starts killing the cops off brutally…..well as brutal as possible for a PG-13 rated film can get……heck one of the cops gets killed by his eye balls being gouged out…..jeepers, anyways so if ur wondering how they win the day….well the woman’s mother comes in and says I’m here to end all this…she says to Diana I know u can’t exist anymore if I die….u only exist because I’m still alive so…..then she stabs herself killing herself which Diana runs to her to try to stop her from stabbing her but she stabs herself so Diana vanishes….this time permanently vanishes, that’s it…..now Diana is dead and our main characters mother is dead….so uh happy ending? Idk if u can qualify this a happy ending…..maybe more like a decent ending?


Anyways so of course our main characters decide to leave the house and move to another house because why would u wanna live in a house that had a demonic ghost who tried murdering them? And that’s how this film ends….the end…..honestly overall idk really how to feel about this film….on one hand I have respect for this film because it’s made by the same guy who made the horror short which won a nomination……btw, but overall I just don’t like this film that much…..the concept is original so I like that but the rest of the film feels generic plus I’ll say this again I’m not a fan of the changes they made to the character of Diana……so overall I’ll give this film a solid ehhh 5/10…..do give it a try bur definitely check out the horror short…..thats scarier in my opinion
