I’m gonna start off with a warning , this series contains scenes that will probably be to scary for kids….that depends on the kids…….some kids may not mind horror….then there’s the ones who don’t like horror……also side note or fun tid bit….this was a Canadian Nickelodeon show….I just found that out….also heres a YouTuber who ranks all the episodes of Are You Afraid of the Dark?….enjoy…also warning ….massive spoilers for the 1990s version,  the 2019 version, and lastly 2021 version…..u been warned

Are You Afraid Of The Dark 1989 series: so how to start ok well its similar to scary stories to tell in the dark…in the way of each episode not connecting to each other…also heres the opening theme for this show….u decide and let me know which version of it sound scarier,  this version or the 2019 version of the theme song

So anyways the whole premise of this show is that these group of kids who are called the the midnight society…go out in the middle of the woods at night to tell scary stories….each episode being 1 person telling a story…and before they each person says there story they always take a bag of dust and take a handful of dust out and say  submitted  for approval of the midnight society…..they always say those words before telling there story….do in this show there stories of vampire’s  or aliens  and or ghosts  and well other things of course….none of these stories have cannibalism or deal with death or stuff like that…none of that since its a kids show but this show can be eerie….let me give u an example of an episode…there one episode called the tale of the midnight madness…ands about this theater that’s running out of business because not alot of people are coming to watch movies…and our 2 main protagonist…a male and female…don’t want to see the place close because they like working there…..so one night this guy named Dr Vink comes over and brings them a DVD of his he created….on a side note Dr Vink shows up in this series a handful of times and there the running gag of no one able to pronounce his name correctly…I mean here’s the example….Vinks the name, Dr Vink….Dr Fink?…..Vink….with a V-V-V………its a bizarre running joke….but still…back to thr story…he brings over a film called Nosfuratu…..anyone who doesn’t know what that is….Nosfuratu is a knockoff count Dracula…that’s basically it….so this movie starts bringing people into the theaters and the movies theater starts becoming popular…and well by accident the manager goes back on his promise he made with Vink….(I forget the promise)…anyway so that night Nosfuratu comes out of the screen and starts terrorizing our main characters….and it ends with the male character jumping into the movie and  luring the vampire back into the film…I really love this episode im a fan of theaters and the whole vampire type stuff…oh another prime example of how dark this series can get….well in one episode we see a young boy getting buried alive……..yeah hr welcome for that….like I said no way on earth this show qualified as a kids show….granted now this show is corny and campy…..but think of it from a young kids perspective…..a kid who’s never seen any horror related things, and who is also young….yeah u would also be scared of this show as well….

• remember how I talked about Doctor Vink….well I now want to talk about a second recurring character named Mr Sardos….he is in charge of a place called Mr Sardos Magic mansion……he’s a salesman….he sells potions and weird and bizzare stuff….sometimes it seems like he swindle people out of there money…..so yes he’s my second favorite character in this series…..again I highly recommend this cheesy corny show…..Sardos appears in like 4 episodes…while Doctor Vink appears in like 6 to 7 episodes….mainly 6…..to basically summarize this up, my 2 favorite recurring characters in the stories in this show are….Doctor Vink and Mr Sardo…..in a way there’s a running gag for Sardo in this show like Doctor Vink…..2 episodes out of the 4 Mr Sardo is in…someone pronounces his name wrong…so he says….”its Sardo, no mister. Accent on the “do”……..if ur asking how someone pronounce his name wrong…well one person said is there a Mr Sour-Dough here….seriously?…kid….Sour Dough?….I don’t even know how u get those 2 names mixed….Sour Dough doesn’t have an “a” in it..oh and to refresh the running gag for doctor Vink…well it goes like tnis…..”Vinks the name, doctor Vink…………doctor Fink?…..Vink, with a V-V-V”……again I really love this show….its a good amount of horror for kids, heck its enough to entertain me….and I do like the campy and corny tone this series has….also for some reason Mr Sardo always first asks his customers….” have u seen our vomit? “…..um first off ewww….second off to clarify….he’s talking about fake vomit…..but still ewwww…..its really strange that’s the first thing he promotes……oh also heres another thing about his character….he basically tries scamming people out of there money….quite obvious when lets say for example….he sells his customer a door that leads u to the future….and the kid buys it and it works…then he brings it back and says it works…now im assuming ur saying…Jarrod how is that a scam…well u can tell he scams his customers because he clearly never knows that his products work…heck he says “it works?….oh i mean, of course it works”…..….I think u can see why I like this character…..also don’t believe me he scams…well heres an obvious example……loom at this conversation when he tries selling this small door that shows the future 

Sardo: of course it works, after all its one of a kind….and its a steal….at uh….$64.95

Kid: what?

Sardo: oh but wait, today’s sale day. It’s only at $44.95

Kid: I can’t afford it

Sardo: $24.95?

Kid: I’ve only got $10

Sardo: sold, but I’m losing on the deal…

Ok now its quite obvious he scams his customers….oh and then once this boy leaves…..he literally pulls out another of that same prop he sold……one of a kind my butt…..pfff….oh and for some reason he always says but I’m losing on the deal…also another thing I’m noticing…all his customers always for some reason only have $10….can’t tell if that a running gag or not…..oh and here’s another prime example of why I like Mr Sardo…..take this scene for example….

Girl: Mr Sardo!….Mr Sardo!…come on Mr Sardo!….open up

Sardo: thats Sar-do…..no mister….accent on the “do”.

Girl: Mr Sardo i need to speak to u

Mr Sardo: im all out of vomit. Try me Tuesday.

Girl: no, its the specs my boyfriend brought. 

Mr Sardo: sorry. No guarantees. If they don’t work, that’s your nevermind. 

Girl: no, wait. My problem is they do work.

Again whats with his obsession on trying to sell vomit?….its bizzare…..and I always laugh at the line “if they don’t work, thats your nevermind “…..……seriously this is by far my favorite recurring character in this show……

• remember how I mentioned Doctor Vink….well I’d like to get more descriptive about his character…..first off this guy is an odd ball….to give an example….at one moment he’ll act like a nice guy but then another moment he’ll be like ” u will regret everything u just done”….as stated this guy is a odd ball….oh and if ur wondering what his character is…..idk….he’s many things….in one episode he’s a movie maker….in another episode he’s a weird old man who lives in the forest….in another episode he’s a chief……don’t even ask……in another episode he’s on a pirate like quest…..again don’t even ask….he’s strange, so basically let’s just except this….honestly this is why I like this character…mainly because he is an odd ball…..

• i also want to mention other specific episodes i like…..there’s this one episode where a boy somehow ends up quote on quote dead…..yeah this is a kids show I know…..and he ends up in a room where ur decided if ur going to hell or heaven….but the reason I really love this episode is because of the guy who decides who’s gonna go to he’ll or heaven….its the actor who voiced Eago in Aladdin……omg he’s great in this episode…..he acts snarky and basically screams out most of his words in this episode….its great…..oh if ur wondering what his character is like….well he’s certain he never makes a mistake and is perfect,  oh and he has a schedule…..but whoopee he does make a mistake…he almost sends the boy to the afterlife…when he’s not even dead or done with this life…..

I honestly give this series a 9.8/10 its worth a watch in my opinion……its indeed a classic
