Funko Fusion: Let’s start off with showing y’all the trailers shall we?
So where do I even begin with this game, well I guess what I will mention now is that I was looking forward to this game….it seems they took tons of inspiration from Lego games which are my favorite…also Funko Pops can be cool to collect (don’t judge me)….also this game has tons of themed characters/worlds such as,
Shawn of the Dead
He-man
Umbrella Academy
FNAF
Chucky (a character to unlock)
M3gan (a character to unlock)
Jaws
The Thing
Jurassic Park/World
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Hot Fuzz
Invincible
Back to The Future
Colonel Sanders (a character u unlock)
The Walking Dead (if u pre-order the game and it’s only 2 characters the game gives u)
The Mummy
I think I’m missing a few more but doubt it….this game has over 50+ playable characters, also this game has the charm of Lego games where the characters don’t speak…they mumble.
And with the price of only $40 that must mean this game is great right? Well before we get into that let’s get the rating out of the way so we can get into spoilers.
Overall, look I wanted to love this game but I just can’t, don’t get me wrong this isn’t a bad game (unlike Star Wars Outlaws) no this game is fun….there’s fun to be have with this game.
It has a certain charm to it, this game reminds me of Lego Dimensions…but with Funko Pops, also for a game that u would think is aimed at kids….trust me there are moments that aren’t, I mean besides the fact there are horror movie levels/characters.
But it also u can shoot off characters’ heads in The Thing level, there’s blood in this game as well, when ur character gets damage including fire damage ur skin burns down to a skeleton….well this game is balsy and I love it…but everything else about this game is bad.
The game has some bugs.
The gameplay ranges from mid to bad.
The balancing of this game is all sorts of off.
Some decisions in this game make u wonder what was the thought process behind that. And just why?
I feel the damage is done already because it seems fans are already getting tired of this game….for instance, over on Twitch, the highest view count of this game is at 108 at best….oofffff that’s not good for a new game that just came out recently. Yeah, this game was dead on arrival I guess u can say.
U know it’s bad when Star Wars Outlaws on Twitch has like a couple thousand views sometimes but most often just 250 views….yeah sad that the game is beating this game on view count….oooffff.
What doesn’t help though is there was no day-one update. They went silent for a while….anything they posted about future updates they are working on to fix bugs they all a sudden deleted those posts….it’s almost as if they tried to alienate it’s audience, again not a good sign.
Luckily they are fixing this game (now after going silent)…heck they are taking player feedback, so at the current state of this game I’ll have to give this game a solid 5/10 I’d wait down the line when they fix this game.
Warning spoilers ahead y’all been warned.
So in this game, the story is basically that u play as Funko Pops and this evil Funko named Eddy (who is glowing purple and has the power of corrupting things with the color purple) destroys the mascot of the Funko Pops….so u the player has to go through worlds of Popular IPs and defeat each corrupt enemy’s and bring back crowns to restore the health of the mascot..
To save the world….ok that’s enough said of the plot for now I’ll mention the ending later, but for now I wanna get into a long rant about the issues with this game, trust me there’s a lot…but I’ll also point out some positives as well…
The first issue comes to mind and this is just a nitpick. This game doesn’t have an open world it has a hub world….u can go back to levels and replay them, and get 100% but there’s no open world where u can just relax and explore around as anyone u want…wish there was but there isn’t.
Also, I think this game fails at explaining its mechanisms….for example, I first started with the Scott Pilgrim level (u can start off with whatever world u want btw). In the Scott Pilgrim level ur in a stadium room being attacked by this floating guy who’s shooting down fire at u and fire enemies….
The issue is this game only gives u 3 hearts. If u lose all 3 hearts u die and have to restart…if u lose one life u turn into a ghost and the only way to revive yourself is to go back to ur Funko Pop box and spend some currency u collected to revive urself…it keeps getting expensive the more u do it…
Also just like Lego games u destroy things and find game currency to unlock skins and all that. Anyway the game doesn’t tell u the barebone of its own mechanisms…also the levels have puzzles in them. Some range from difficult and will require some thinking…the rest are very easy to the point u wonder is this game is made for toddlers, until u remember there’s blood and levels that will make u a grown adult wanna get a refund…
So probably not, see what I mean by this game is unbalanced?
For instance, at one point it tells u that u will need a base machine to destroy a window in front of u….u will not know what that means because the game doesn’t explain. Turns out what u need to do is destroy these purple doors on the second floor which can be destroyed by hitting them with ur melee weapon (each character is given a melee weapon).
But the game doesn’t tell u that, that u can do that….so ur just gonna be left wandering around baffled. And u have to knock the door down to the restroom where trhersd this machine that if u collect these blue power cells for it (when opening cheats throughout each IP level) gains u a new item to create and use..
So u have to create a bass and take it up there and use it…only Scott can use it with his guitar….see each character has a different set of abilities…which comes very helpful for going back to certain levels to get 100% collection.
This game gives no shites about its audience….it’s almost like the devs said welp our job is here is done, our audience can figure out the rest…this is the equivalent if ur a small kid who’s never swam before and u go up to ask ur parents to teach u to swim.
They end up saying sure thing, they pick u up then proceed to toss u into the deep end…just to walk away and say ok figure it out from here it’s easy.
Like uhh no game u have to teach us some of ur mechanisms, not every game’s mechanisms are the same.
So after finding out that base game of mechanisms I was able to understand the game….but once again I had to look it up. We’re off to a bad start.
Anyway, that’s not all the bad things in this game btw, other issues come to mind such as.
Each IP map has a boss fight but it’s always repetitive, it’s always a giant figure with these purple dots on it that u need to shoot off…then take the purple objects to a tube and it will create u a big figure to take down the enemy….yeah that only gets boring to watch after what the umpteenth time?
BTW each IP maps have a total of 5 levels….there’s a total of what 6 to 7 base maps so that’s a lot of gaming…yeah will get to that In a second, there’s also tons of collectables in this game.
BTW each IP map has 4 characters u can pick from…u can change in and out of them each map by going to the Funko Pop Box….so I’ll admit that’s a nice addition
BTW remember how I alluded to the balancing being off? Well, that’s more true when u get to The Thing level….let me explain to y’all how much I hate this level, and how much it frustrates me..
So come to the second level in this IP map u have to fight against a boss fight, the alien doggo u saved….this fight sucks, u have to shoot at the creature multiple times at specific areas on it…..the enemy spawns dog enemies at u to make it harder…btw there’s 3 stages to this fight…
Which makes it worse because sometimes u shooting a gun at it won’t do damage so u just have to stand there keep shooting it might take u over 20 minutes! Or 30! By then ur fingers will be tired out and u will be frustrated.
Bta this game is completely unforgiving as I said if u lose all 3 of ur hearts the game will restart and u have to do the whole level again…..I ain’t gonna lie guy I’m dreading going back to the levels to get 100% I think I’ll skip out on that.
But if u get past this boss fight which u will be extremely happy….u will continue forward towards the outside in the snow…where you will find out u can freeze to death and die…..at that point, I wanted to rip my head off, not my hair but my head.
This game doesn’t even tell u that u can and will freeze to death if u don’t stand near flares or step outside in the snow and can die period….so I had to redo that boss fight too many times, yeah this is what I mean by the balancing is off…
Some levels feel way too easy to the point that there’s no challenge, but then other levels are so frustratingly hard to the point u will wanna start testing ur nails off and wonder why u bought this game….this game is uneven and broken.
Speaking of broken, let’s talk about the Hot Fuzz level because ohhh boy….so when u reach the last boss fight which is the giant big fig fight which once again always happens at the end of each 5th chapter of each IP map.
U fight against the big fig on this small-scale town model….remember how I said this game is buggy? Well look no further than this map because some of the buildings on the scale build don’t load in so all u see is nothing….but the issue is if u run into the invisible area spots it still acts like ur running into a building so something is in the way…
So it just makes it harder to tell where to step or not, oh also did I forget to mention sometimes the enemy Funko Pops gets stuck behind small objects? Yep, this is the state of modern gaming y’all….release a half-assed buggy game now and fix it down the line.
When is this gonna stop? When will corporations learn this is not the way to go with things? Oh but no this is so worth it, u will get so much mileage from playing this game. As in u will u get in ur car and drive the extra mileage to go find this corporation and demand a refund?
Anyway always the puzzles get repetitive, the puzzles consist of u,
Pulling 4 levers in the span of 15 seconds to open up a chest.
Come back later when u have a specific character unlocked with a specific ability.
Come back later when u have more items unlocked to use specific items to solve puzzles.
Yeah, this gets really repetitive, where Lego games always add some new elements to their puzzles in each game……each level in this game has puzzles that are all the same to the point of it being Monotonous and dull.
On a side note the collectibles in this game oh boy the collectibles….so I’m gonna go through a rundown of each collectible and u tell me if this all seems all pointless? This game has,
42 main story levels.
Each IP map which there are like 8 of them has a bonus character to unlock or a bonus level. Which also contains a bonus character to unlock.
Each 42 maps including the bonus levels have a total of 7 crowns to unlock. This is one of the many collectibles to get 100%. Also, these crowns help restore health to the Funko Pop mascot.
In each 42 levels, there’s always 1 power cell u can find which boosts these 3 machines the game has, each machine does the following (including via by color),
The blue machine lets u craft objects.
The red machine gives u grenades and explosion stuff.
Green machine gives u things to restore health (on a side note when u use a bottle to restore health u can take the bottle to a recycling bin and gain points, huh funny coming from Funko Pops that get tossed in a landfill when not used and is bad for the environment).
So each map has 1 power cell to upgrade the ability for each of those machines (oh goodie).
There are 42 chicken buckets to locate around the maps…yes 42 chicken buckets, this is how u unlock Colonel Sanders…..yeah good luck it’s like locating needles in a haystack.
There are 42 dog meat piles u can locate which unlocks u a dog man Funko Pop.
There’s the bonus characters or bonus rooms to unlock.
If u want to unlock M3gan u have to locate her 7 times throughout 7 random maps and fight her each 7 times….that’s how u unlock her.
If u want to unlock Chucky u have to locate him 7 times and chase him around each time.
If u want to unlock Omni Man u have to get all 7 crowns in the Invincible level, which btw is a bonus level.
Yeah, I’m sad because the bonus levels are levels I cared about such as,
The Mummy
Invincible
Back To The Future
FNAF
Shawn of The Dead
I’m sure I’m forgetting more.
So yeah let me put all this in perception for y’all.
U got to play through 42 levels the first time to unlock the levels!
Then u have to play the 42 levels for a second time to get 100%!
Then u have to do the bonus levels separately!
Then go back and replay through the bonus levels to get 100%!
After that’s all said in done once u get 100% if u want to play as any character u want and still play the game u will have to load into levels and replay through puzzles, boss fights, and getting attacked by enemies all over again!
Why? Just why? That’s a total of 5 times, a game. Developers pray tell me and be honest…what incentives do I possibly have to play 42 levels a total of 5 times? I’m already getting annoyed on my first play through, heck I gave up already with the current state this game is in.
This is why I think this game would benefit from an open world, so we don’t have to go back to the levels list to play as every character we unlocked, why the hell would I wanna go back and deal with the same hard Monotonous boss fights? And enemies, and puzzles again once I get 100%?
Idk and this game sure as hell don’t know either. Btw if u want the most hardest chapter in this game then look no further than the He-Man level….oh lord I hated this level.
Here’s why I hated this level, there’s one segment where u have to build portals to teleport yourself across a broken bridge, but hold up there’s more….while ur doing that there’s a giant swarm of enemies on the other side of the bridge shooting at u, so basically ur in the open line of fire…
U will die a few times if u don’t time things out right, also did I forget to mention that the enemies can shoot their lasers through the portals towards u? Yeah, they can do that. Oh goodie.
Look I know it seems I hate this game, but in reality, I don’t. I actually like this game a lot, this is the type of game that’s catered towards me, I mean the fact it’s a game about Funko Pops that takes inspiration from Lego games.
So this game should be perfectly wrapped up and great, but the issue is this game falls flat due to multiple issues, an uneven unbalanced game, a lack of caring for its audience, and lastly bugs/glitches.
Yeah, I bet u can see why I don’t consider this game amazing, anyways let’s skip to the ending because I ranted on long enough. So come to the end of this game, the Funko Pop mascot fights against Eddy….guess how he stops Eddy? With the power of friendship, yeah I kid u not he offers him a hug and that’s all it takes…..uhhhh I’m sorry what?
That’s it? Really? Alright sure I guess, on a side note that’s such a cliché of an ending. Oh, the power of friendship is what stops the baddie, get the Fuck out of here.
Also plz developers, plz add open world to this game. This game suffers from without that. Because I sure as hell ain’t gonna replay through the levels for the umpteenth time when I’m already getting annoyed on my first play through.
Anyways hope y’all enjoyed this review, also I don’t have a tease for the next review I’m working on, so until then.
